2.06 The chicago boys, El Ladrillo, and Chile: The Economy of Neoliberalism

Michael and Haydn challenge some of the thoughts regarding what the actual objectives were economically in Chile. They heavily cite a text which no translation of exists into English commonly called El Ladrillo, the brick, which was the founding text of the Chicago Boys as much as any other.

2.02 Operation Condor: The Rise of the Chicago Boys, Austerity, and Neoliberalism
Haydn and Michael break down for the first time the actual format of the economic system that defines neoliberalism. Within this system the rising right wing of the 1980s finds themselves in the process of breaking from the Old Right led by the Rockefeller and Council on Foreign Relations set. We have our early western reactionary presidents, typified by Reagan and Nixon, but for the countries we're talking about we have much more going on. The war for the right to live rather than gaining the right to starve has begun, we see the early IMF monetarists and the rising tide of the neoliberal reaction in Chile. The examples given throughout the episode primarily hinge on Chile but largely apply to most of the governments that we will discuss, it's simply the names that are swapped out. This establishes Operation CONDOR as not just a physical terror plan implemented like GLADIO or PHOENIX, but instead as a financial and economic campaign of terror, privatization, and encirclement of the public sphere against the working class. For other places where Haydn and Michael are active or if you'd like to support us you can find that below: Patreon Substacks Michael: Patterns of Collaboration: Where he has been publishing about the ties between the anti-communists and terrorists. Haydn: Kollaps: Where he has recently published about El Ladrillo. Episode 1.6: The End of the Civil War; a Return to Occupation

The End of the Civil War

Haydn and Michael wrap up the end of the series on Afghanistan, addressing the war as it pertains to the time leading up to 9/11/01. As the battle of Kabul kicks off, and as one General would say, "justice and dignity were crucified," we find ourselves approaching the darkest days of the war in Afghanistan. The Intelligence agencies backing both Taliban and Mujahadeen would categorically deny any involvement, and those of us who hoped that perhaps there would be a silver lining found ourselves sorely disappointed. As the war winds down, who will be the man who was to the right of Bin Laden?

Thank you

To all those who stood with us while we had some growing pains early in this season, who patiently waited to grow with us, and who I hope enjoyed the work that we poured hours into, thank you. We hope that you got as much out of Timber Sycamore presents: Afghanistan as we did. We look forward to seeing you next week for our next series, one where the good and bad is much less ambiguous, and the CIA agents are much more famous. We'll be back to cover parapolitics and all of the spooks who go bump in the night next time, with Timber Sycamore Presents: Operation Condor.

You can find the trailer for that here: on our Youtube. If you appreciate the work that we do and want to be more involved with the podcast you can see what we offer over on our Patreon. As always, we will see you next time.
