The remaining two battled it out for the Australian Open title, where the eight-time and defending champion proved to be too difficult for Daniil Medvedev to overcome, despite his 20-match winning streak.
In the only singles match of the day, Daniil Medvedev stopped Stefanos Tsitsipas from reaching his first grand slam final, defeating him in straight sets to advance to a second grand slam final. Aussie wildcards Sam Stosur and Matthew Ebden advanced to the finals of the mixed doubles after a close battle with Krawczyk and Salisbury.
More players suffer ab strains, bringing the total up to five who have struggled with ab injuries. Also, two American women advance to set up a quarterfinal clash, whilst two Russian men do the same.
It was the first day without any crowds, but that didn't stop the tennis drama from continuing. Day 6 saw Medvedev have a mid-match meltdown, arguing with his coach, Karolina Muchova launched a massive comeback to upset Karolina Pliskova, and it was a very good day for Americans.
Melbourne has entered a snap five-day lockdown, meaning no fans at the tennis for a minimum of five days. Defending champion and world no. 1 Novak Djokovic suffered an injury scare. Nick Kygrios fought hard against Dominic Thiem, but fell short, whilst tournament favourites on the women's side sailed through.
The 2020 women's singles champion, Sofia Kenin title defence has been cut short. Australian wildcards, Thanasi Kokkinakis and Alexei Popyrin battled through five-set matches but unfortunately fell short.
Ajla Tomljanovic was just a few points away from her first third round in Melbourne, but the world no. 2 was too much for her in their three-set showdown, where as Nick Kygrios was just a point away (twice) from being sent packing by Ugo Humbert but prevailed in an epic five-set battle. Day 3 also saw two top 10 seeds fall on the womens side, while tournament favourites sailed through to round 3, and on the mens side, the other Australians all had quick defeats.
