#20 - How entrepreneurship fueled the journey into sales
I often consider sales being very similar to entrepreneurship.

You often have a revenue goal to strive for, you have a list of clients or a territory to manage, and you have to get customers willing to offer you money for the value you are about to provide them.

Therefore, when I first spoke to Justine, I knew that I had to have her on the podcast.

She shares her journey of starting an APAC Go-To-Marketing Consultancy for European companies with a couple of friends while she was still at University.

We chatted about how they had the courage to consult with these big companies, how these experiences fueled her journey in Tech Sales today, and why learning to have fun is important when starting out.

#16 - Charting your path in an early APAC Team (SDR to SDR Manager)
For different individuals in Tech Sales, the journey begins at different places. For Kaely, she went down the path of joining an early APAC Team as their first BDR.

While being part of an early APAC Team has its challenges, such as the lack of brand recognition & regional/local resources, Kaely shares her experiences on how she made the best out of what was given.

She also shares how she leverages her previous experiences to aid her prospecting efforts and how trial & error is often the best way to improve.

Her process helped her achieve two promotions in a period of 16 months, going from a BDR to a BDR manager and leading a team in this region.

#14 - From a BDR/SDR straight to an Enterprise AE
The BDR or SDR role is typically how we start our career in Tech Sales. We learn the importance of prospecting and built our foundation in sales in this role.

While there are perks of remaining as a BDR/SDR, many may want to move on to an AE role, where closing deals & revenue is their new KPI.

However, many find themselves stuck in the BDR/SDR role, either because they have no opportunity in their current organisation or because other organisations may not be willing to give them a shot as an AE without prior experience.

In this episode, we have Shawn Goh, who started his Tech Sales career as an Enterprise SDR in Workday but subsequently became an Enterprise AE in his next role.

He shares his journey and the things he did during his time as an SDR that got him the opportunity to jump into an AE role immediately.

#9 - Mapping out your journey in Tech Sales
I’ve always believed that not all sales roles are created equal. Depending on the various factors such as the market conditions, GTM strategy from the management & even down to the territory you have, this can affect your sales performance.

As salespeople, though we try not to focus on those uncontrollable factors, we can’t deny that those factors can affect our quota attainment, and could potentially affect our career advancement.

However, what we can control is how we map out our journey in Tech Sales, and that oftens starts from choosing the right company.

There are questions that we can ask ourselves or the hiring manager during the interview process, to ensure that we are at the right place at the right time.

Leon shares his journey on how starting out in full-cycle sales has allowed him to accelerate his career, unknowingly mapping out his career in the right direction.

He also shares his challenges along the way, and how his approach to sales has changed over the years as an AE at multiple Tech companies such as Meltwater & Salesforce.

Definitely tune in to this episode if you’re looking to be in Tech Sales for the long run!

#8 - How to land an SDR role successfully (From an SDR Leader)
The SDR/BDR role is typically your entry point into Tech Sales, especially in SaaS.

However, with the high influx of applicants for SDR/BDR roles out there…

What are hiring managers looking out for when hiring SDRs, and how do you stand out during the interview process?

On the other hand, what should an applicant look out for when applying to a company, and how do they succeed?

Hans, Head of Sales Development for Workato (Asia Pacific Japan), shares some of his thoughts on what someone like him would be looking out for.

Additionally, if SDR management/leadership is something you’ve thought about, Hans shared his perspectives on what makes a great SDR manager/leader and how you can increase your chances of getting the role.

Recently, I’ve had several people reach out to me via LinkedIn asking how they can break into Tech Sales.

Some of them also asked me my main reasons for wanting a career in Tech Sales.

So I thought this would be an excellent episode to share my top 3 reasons Tech Sales was a good career choice for me, and it could be good for you too.

1. Earning Potential

2. Reward is tied closely to the effort I put in

3. I'm addicted to the feeling of winning

#6 - Prospecting into unfamiliar territories (Greater China Region)
As an SDR/BDR, having a good territory plays a part in your success.

But imagine being given a territory where you're unfamiliar with their culture, traditions, business ecosystem & language.

Augustine faced that when he first joined Mulesoft. As a Singaporean who spoke mainly English, he had to prospect into the Greater China Region.

This meant learning the right way to pronounce the common terms, understanding the best channels to utilize (Hint: LinkedIn isn't the best!), and many more!

Furthermore, he had to deal with the same quotas as other reps with better and more mature territories.

Despite all that, Augustine got promoted to a Senior Account Development Executive (Senior SDR) recently.

Hear about his journey in this episode, and learn what steps he took to ensure success & what motivated him to continue striving forward despite the hardship.

#5 - Start your Tech Sales journey in a big or small company?
I've seen the number of SDR/BDR roles increase in the past few months, which tells me that there are more opportunities for anyone looking to break into Tech Sales.

Generally, you will see roles available in either a big or small company.

What are the pros & cons of starting your Tech Sales career in either one?

I share some thoughts on these questions based on my personal experience & conversations with others.

There are many more factors to consider, but hopefully, this is a start for those interested in a career in Tech Sales.

After more than a decade in a different industry & role, would you be willing to start from scratch again?

Norman Seck, our second guest on the #TheRevenueJourney podcast, did precisely that.

Norman spent almost an entire decade running his own company, ‘Elegant Swing’, a premier provider of Jazz music to Corporate Clients in Singapore.

However, he decided to jump into Tech Sales, starting as a Business Development Representative, an entry-level sales in most technology companies.

Today, Norman has worked his way to become an Enterprise Account Executive within Impact.com, closing deals and advocating for partnerships as a revenue-generating channel for marketers.

Hear about his journey in this episode, where he covers what prompted him to make the leap in the first place and what helped him successfully transition from a BDR to an AE.

#3 - Starting out in Tech Sales within APAC or ASEAN
Are you planning to pursue technology sales as a career?

An excellent way to start would be to look at resources online and get an idea of what you can expect in the role daily.

You would likely come across the Sales Development Representative (SDR) role and notice that it's a good starting point to break into the world of technology sales (Mainly SaaS).

Some of these resources may even share tips or advice on succeeding in the SDR role.

While most of these tips and advice are valid, they don't consider multiple factors that make the role slightly different within the ASEAN / APAC region.

In my time as an SDR myself, I've learned some of these through personal experiences & through conversations with others, and this episode is to shed light on these lessons learned.

In university, Clara majored in communications & was on her way to working full-time in a media agency.

However, she eventually found her way into technology sales through conversations with different individuals.

She is currently an Account Manager at TrendMicro, selling a technical product & interacting with technical people (CTOs, IT Directors, Engineers, etc.) daily.

Hear about her journey in this episode, where she covers how a mixture of curiosity, networking, good habits & genuine relationship-building got her where she is today.
