The Life and Ministry of Jonathan Edwards - Dr. Matthew Everhard

This was an absolute banger of an episode to record! I had the privilege of getting Dr. Matthew Everhard (D.Min in Jonathan Edwards) all the way from the USA to speak on the life and ministry of the great American Puritan Theologian, Pastor, Revivalist Jonathan Edwards. This conversation was such a huge blessing to me and I am certain that it will be for you as well. May our lives continue to conform to Christ and may our affections for Him and His finished work ever increase.

You can follow and subscribe to Matthew's Youtube channel @Matthew Everhard.

Dr. Matthew Everhard is an ordained Presbyterian minister in the PCA, and a Jonathan Edwards scholar. He is Pastor of Gospel Fellowship PCA, North of Pittsburgh.

Matthew is a writer for Modern Reformation. www.modernreformation.org

He is a graduate of Malone University, (BA) Ashland Theological Seminary (MAPT), and Reformed Theological Seminary (DMIN).

Matthew is the author, editor, or contributor to a number of books including: Hold Fast the Faith: A Devotional Commentary on the Westminster Confession of Faith (Great Lakes); A Collection or Essays on Jonathan Edwards (JESociety); The Jonathan Edwards Encyclopedia (Eerdmans); The Westminster Society Journal (Westminster Society) and several more. He has an upcoming book called A Theology of Joy: Jonathan Edwards and Eternal Happiness in the Holy Trinity (Fort Worth, TX: JESociety Press, 2018).

Infant Baptism - God's Covenant sign and seal of His Promises

Why should Christians baptize their infants and children? Is this practice merely a result of blind tradition or a hidden love for Roman Catholicism? Or perhaps, is it something the Bible actually teaches from Old to New Testaments? In this episode I will argue from Scripture why I believe this is what God has decreed for His church to practice, take comfort in, and to enjoy the riches of His promises made to His beloved Bride - The Covenant People of God.

Responding to Kong Hee on Calvinism and Arminianism

In this episode I respond to a recent video which showcased the theological views of Kong Hee, one of Singapore's most famous "pastors" on the subject of Calvinism and Arminianism. If you want a more in-depth explanation of Calvinism itself, you can tune in to my TULIP series on this podcast. In this episode, I will focus more on pointing out how the Arminian position as put forth by people like Kong Hee is heavily inconsistent with the Biblical teaching of Scripture with regards to the Will of Man, the Predestinating work of God, and other things related to Salvation. I do this because I think the belief that Kong Hee represents is the same belief that is held by many Singaporean Christians today which is of great concern, and I pray that this response to Kong Hee will encourage more discussions and research on this important Biblical doctrine! May all of our doctrine be conformed to the Scriptures, and that they may indeed be God-glorifying and not man-glorifying.

What is Covenant Theology?

Continuing in our series about what it means to be Reformed, David and I discuss what is Covenant Theology and why this is such a central aspect to all of Biblical Theology and crucial to understanding God's redemptive purposes in history. Does God have multiple plans or one plan of salvation? Does God have one people or two separate distinct peoples? Can God fail in keeping any of His promises? Join us in this episode where we discuss this important topic in detail!

What does it mean to be Confessional?

Continuing in the series of "What does it mean to be Reformed?" In this episode we talk about what it means to be "Confessional". Being a "Confessional Christian" seems to be a lost pursuit in today's day of "Minimalistic Christianity". What does it mean to be a "Confessional Christian"? Why identify with a denomination? Aren't Christians supposed to just be focused on being united? Why subscribe to a particular confession/creed of faith? Shouldn't the Christian life be just me and my Bible?

I am delighted to have Mark from the Full Metal Calvinists podcast "@fmcalvinists on Instagram" to join me on this episode where we discuss the importance of having a robust historic Christian foundation, and why that is so incredibly vital in today's age of theological minimalism and shallow evangelicalism.

What does it mean to be Reformed?

Why do I even call this podcast "The REFORMED Singaporean"? What does it mean to be a "Reformed" Christian? What are the roots of our faith?

In today's episode, I kick off a short series of episodes talking about the background of how we got here today as the Singapore church, along with what we can be doing better, which starts off by recovering a deep, profound, zealous love for God and His Word. Ever wondered about the historicity of the Christian faith? Ever wondered how one can learn more about the deeper things of Christianity as revealed in the Bible? Tune in to this episode!!!

How should we read the Bible?

This is easily one of the MOST important questions any Christian could (and should) be asking. What seems to be a simple fundamental skill that is possessed by everybody is actually a detrimental inability to read, interpret and apply Scripture properly. One of the results of our increasingly biblically illiterate church of today is the lack of understanding as to how one should read their Bible. Join me on this episode as I walk through the important steps of reading every and any part of Scripture! There can be nothing more fundamental to the Christian than understanding and applying this correctly.

What is Theology?

The most fundamental questions about life, faith and everything deal with Theology. Who is God? What is He like? What is He not? Everything about Christianity starts with Theology. Our understanding of Theology determines our understanding of everything else. New to the podcast? Unsure about where to begin? Unsure about where to start learning about Christian theology in general? Then this episode would be good for you!

Welcome to the New Year everyone! Hard to believe six months have already passed since I started this podcast. Thank you everyone for all your support thus far and for listening to my content! I pray that this podcast will continue to glorify God and sanctify His church one step at a time for the rest of 2021. Soli Deo Gloria!

Christmas Special! - The Rule & Reign of the Messiah

It is the season to be jolly! A very blessed Christmas to one and all. As we think about Christmas and the message of Christ's birth into this world 2000 years ago, what do we think about the work He came to accomplish? Many of us Christians today, while we may have a fairly orthodox message of Christmas in that, Christ came into the world to save sinners, I'm afraid that often times we mistake that story to be the only reason why Christ's birth is to be celebrated. Come and find out more in this episode where I share from Scripture why the coming of the Messiah was so highly expected in the first century, and why His reign and rule over all things ought to inspire and encourage us to live for His glory in all areas of life!

Complementarianism - God's grand design for men & women

Did God really create men & women to be equal in every sense and in every measure? No. He did not. In fact, He did them better. Come and find out why the simple truth about God, men, women and gender (in a Complementarian sense) is clear in the Scriptures and how we ought to be on guard in today's world where this foundational understanding gets distorted and twisted into something else altogether!

I also provide a small life update as well as some technical updates which you will hear for yourself (or perhaps even see for yourself if you find out how, hurhur). Enjoy!!!

Cessationism & The Supernatural Gifts of the Spirit

Following the theme of a great need for Reformation in Singapore, I have decided to kick off a series addressing controversial topics in Singaporean Christianity. What does the Bible teach about the Supernatural Gifts of the Spirit? Are they for today? What about the controversial position of Cessationism? Have those Supernatural Gifts actually ceased? Also, what about all these charismatic churches around us with their various supposed signs and wonders? Come and listen to find out what the Bible says about all these subjects! It'll be spicy but exciting nonetheless!

This is a special episode to commemorate Reformation Day! What is this day all about and why is it so special? Join me and David as we talk about why the Reformation is still as - if not more relevant in today's day and age where the sufficiency of Scripture is being threatened by all kinds of false teachings and worldly beliefs. Biblical Apologetics - Introduction

What is Apologetics? To put it simply, it is the branch of theology that is focused on the defense of the Christian faith. As the definition states, it is a branch of theology. Like all things related to Christianity, everything stems from our theology. Come and find out with David and myself how God calls us (yes, all of us!) to defend our faith in a manner that is consistent with His Word, that is Gospel-centred, and God-glorifying!

What is a worldview? What is the worldview of Singapore? How do people generally think nowadays? Come and join this exciting conversation between me and my buddies (Caleb & Isaac) as we converse about how our Singaporean culture is like in the area of worldviews, religion and critical thinking. What sets us apart from the rest of the world and what challenges do we face as Christians in this day and age as we reach out to them? Come and also find out why we as Christians are called to think critically and biblically on these issues and most importantly, why it is only in Christ that we can indeed have all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge as we begin on this series!

Answering Objections to Calvinism

Welcome to my most lengthy episode yet! What are the most common objections to the doctrines of grace? In this episode, I finally wrap up our TULIP series and together with a summary of what the 5 points of Calvinism are all about, I will address the most common objections to Calvinism from a biblical perspective and do my best to explain why this is indeed the beautiful doctrine of Scripture that should grip our hearts and transform our very souls! It is my heartfelt prayer that this episode, though lengthy, would challenge our presuppositions and cause us to examine the Scriptures to see if our beliefs are consistent with its testimony. Feel free to drop me a DM on Instagram if you still have any lingering questions after this series!

TULIP - Perseverance of the Saints

We have finally come to the final letter of TULIP! (But not the last episode of the series as you'll see why!) Come and learn about the beautiful truth of the faithfulness of God in keeping His promises to His saints. Can a Christian lose his/her salvation? I would argue that the Bible gives a loud, resounding, NO.

How will God's elect persevere to the end? With the starting point that God preserves His elect to the end.

Come also and see how the five points of Calvinism all fit perfectly together to form the glorious doctrines of grace as we close this series (sort of)!

TULIP - Irresistible Grace

It has been a long time but my new microphone has finally arrived! To a new season of podcasts and (hopefully) better quality on the whole!!! In this episode I'll be focusing on the work of the Holy Spirit in a Christian's salvation. How does the third Person of the Trinity complement the work of the Father and the Son? I pray that this episode will grow our affections for God in His gracious work in the salvation of sinners who could not lift a finger to save themselves.

TULIP - Limited Atonement

The doctrine of Limited Atonement is one of the least popular doctrines in Christianity today. Why? Because it seems to limit the love of God? What does it really mean to say that Jesus Christ died for the world? What was the intent and extent of the atonement? What exactly was accomplished (or not accomplished) in the work of Christ on the cross? Join me as I dialogue with my good friends David and Isaac on the importance of understanding this subject biblically and why it ought to serve to transform the very core of our Christian life!

TULIP - Unconditional Election

The doctrine of Predestination has been misrepresented, misinterpreted and misunderstood heavily in our day and age. It has since received a negative stigma and has harbored hostility from unbelievers and unfortunately, believers alike. But what does God really say about it? Did He put it in His Word only for us to endlessly debate and disagree about it? Or was God actually clear, and we are just in sinful negligence of His Word? Join me and my good friend Isaac (who is no stranger to us) as we discuss about this amazing, liberating, humbling and God-exalting doctrine as we strive to convince you from the Scriptures that Predestination is indeed clear and beautiful!
