Friend of the show and someone well-known to many of our listeners and viewers, John McKenzie drops by today to share some travel stories from a remarkable year of travel, even by his standards.
In the past 12 months he's flown over Mosi-oa-Tunya (Victoria Falls), toured post-Assad Syria, done a Scandinavian circuit, added his 75th new country visited (Ireland), and still had time for lots of domestic travel around the United States, visiting family & friends. In fact, John and I saw each other for a fifth time in person this past June, at Camp Indie.
Oh, and he's organized and hosted the first two CuriosiTrips: his original approach to group travel, spontaneity and multipotentiality.
CuriosiTrips combine the best of group travel: shared experiences, guided information and stories, logistical details and safety & security, with the freedom to still explore on your own and follow your nose.
Itineraries are loosely structured to allow for both curated experiences and spontaneous activities, for which you're welcome to include other members of the group, but there's no obligation or pressure to do so.
If you're keen to visit a place for the first time but want a bit more structure in doing so, or if you've been to a certain place but want to see it from a different perspective, CuriosiTrips are a great option.
The first trip took place in January of 2025 in Mexico City, and the second in May, in Washington, DC. Now, John is heading back to CDMX to revisit a few familiar sights, discover new ones, and take another group of curious travelers with him!
The dates are January 15-20, 2026. Lots of information on how it works, what's included, how to plan and prepare and more, are included on the excellent page here: johnthetraveler.com/curiositrip-mexico-city-2026/
MultiPod listeners and viewers! John has a special promo code for us: PUTTY25. You can apply it at the Stripe checkout page via the website above.
Make sure you circle back to his home page itself too, to learn more about John's travels and also to sign up for his monthly newsletter (if you haven't already), which combines travel news and stories with some honest thoughts & personal reflections as a digital nomad, multipotentialite and committed traveler: johnthetraveler.com
AND: John is a contributor to the new Traveler's Atlas of the World, a hardcover book from National Geographic, released on November 4, 2025! He added insight to the chapter on Eritrea and Djibouti, having visited there in 2024. Congratulations on this amazing opportunity! You can order the book here or in person at most major bookstores.

How do we explain that feeling that pulls us towards doing a certain thing, or that in turn steers us away from doing other things? What makes us actually want to do something, that creates that desire, or pull?
Dr. Matt Jarman is here to discuss that very question, the intriguing concept of 'pulls' - that draw individuals towards certain activities, particularly in the context of ADHD and multipotentiality.
To then take it a step further, Matt has developed tools and systems to actually enhance productivity and satisfaction in your day to day life, despite, or maybe thanks to, your ADHD.
https://productiveforgood.org/adhd-programs-overview/
Matt is trained in organizational psychology, with a focus on productivity. His coaching revolves around four key factors that drive productivity: your mind, your tasks, your time and your pulls.
It's this last one that may really speak to multipotentialites, since it's about what we feel drawn to pursue, why we feel that way but then how we can learn to "manage our mind" to find an effective and productive balance.
If all this sounds fascinating and encouraging, you're in luck! We have a great conversation about how to turn your ADHD, multipotentiality, or whatever label you prefer into your own superpower - for a fulfilling life that is built around the strengths of your brain.

My guest today is Dr. Sarabeth Berk Bickerton, the author of, and you're gonna love this name: More Than My Title: The Power of Hybrid Professionals in a Workforce of Experts and Generalists.
Doesn't that just speak directly to multipotentialites?
Of course you're more than your title, that's the nature of who we are and how we identify ourselves! How do we want to be identified in our work and life, and who gets to determine that? Who gets to choose what title we're known by?
It would seem obvious that it should be up to us, but it's not always easy to navigate that, nor to find the confidence and even the permission to say, "Well, I'm more than my title. I'm more than just the job that I happen to have right now."
More Than My Title was released in 2020, and now Sarabeth is coming out with a new book: Seen Known Valued: How to Achieve Career Belonging in a Workforce Obsessed with Fit.
Do you feel pressured to conform to not just a job position, but a work environment and culture that is stifling, incompatible or just plain boring? Let's assume that you do enjoy your work and career, but you don't want to feel like just another cog in the wheel, a replaceable part, a number.
And as a multitalented multipotentialite, you may have been hired for "one role" but that doesn't mean you should supress your other interest and skills.
Sarabeth's new book helps us navigate the workplace and protect your sense of self, and put the onus on the workforce conforming more with you, rather than the other way around.
The new book will be out any day, and you can pre-order it here!
And you can grab a copy of More Than My Title here:
https://a.co/d/7Ks5iau
In keeping with the spirit of this show, we encourage you to not just grab a copy of the book and share the link with others, but reach out to Sarabeth too, let her know your thoughts and feedback, and help expand this ever-growing global community of non-specialist mutlipotentialite polymath jack-of-all-trades non-conformist-add whatever other term you like fascinating people!

Charlie Biluck is someone who was never quite sure what he wanted to do for a career. Of course, he had lots of different interests coming out of high school and into college, tried some different things, and has been in his current job for the past 9 years. Ultimately though, while he doesn't mind his current job, he's certainly yearning for a change.
So over the last couple years or so, really just out of curiosity, Charlie dove into genealogy research and discovered a newfound passion. He decided to combine this passion with his love for travel and to start a new business. Called "Ancestral Wanderlust, his idea is to offer unique tours where people can visit the homeland of their ancestors.
However, Charlie is now at that classic multipotentialite stage. He's wondering whether he can sustain his interest in this project and make the commitment required for it to be successful.
So in today's episode, we learn about Charlie's story and what's brought him to this point. He's made a lot of progress., put in a lot of time and work, gone through some burnout and found some new focus. He's excited, and still believes in the project, in fact it's going stronger than ever: the first tour to Ireland is planned for May, 2026.
But now we're at that point of what does the future hold, and we're not just talking four or five years from now. For a multipotentialite, it can be a pretty short window to when that switch flips between, "I'm really excited and passionate about this new thing," and, "Oh, I've put all this time/work/money into it and now I don't know if I still want to do it."
It's something that I know most, if not all of us can sympathize with in some shape or form.
So it's a big part of what we're going to chat about here today, as we explore multipotentiality with Charlie.

In the search for stability, yet the need for variety, multipotentialites often hit a crossroads. How to maintain a life open to discovery and curiosity, while providing for yourself and often, a family.
And have you ever just gotten "tired of not knowing what was next"? My guest today hit that obstacle a few years back, another turning point that often confronts multipotentialites.
My friend Nicole was visiting for a couple days recently, and knowing at least part of her fascinating career path, I had always considered her a classic multipotentialite, whether she knew it or not!
So what better place than at home and in person to share with you her story of pursuing interests, following spontaneous opportunities and making multiple 90° turns, fundamentally in pursuit of what was curious, exciting and meaningful.
Nicole has studied International Development and Spanish, taught English in Japan and learned Japanese, worked in multiple countries in Africa doing aid and development work for Médecins Sans Frontiers, worked on political campaigns, had a stint as assistant to the leader of the Green Party of Canada, worked on organic farms, done countless volunteer projects, all over the space of roughly 15 years, before hitting that crossroads and turning back to one of her first loves (and plans): completing a teaching degree and working with young kids.
Nicole is now a kindergarten teacher, and as you'll here near the end of our conversation, she has a real-time revelation that this might all along have been the job that gives her the balance of curiosity, stability yet variety that she craves.
Join us for this conversation that is a celebration of being insatiably curious.
Meanwhile, as her many interests have also led to a rather significant accumulation of "stuff," Nicole has gotten on to a declutterring group born from the blog "A Slob Comes Clean", by Dana K. White. There's a podcast as well, and a private Facebook group that Nicole very much vouches in favour of.
In the spirit of connection and finding new ideas and information, this could be another opportunity for anyone keen to simplify and perhaps tidy things up a bit. Check it out through the links below, and if you join you'll see Nicole in there too!

Steve Pope and Patty Calbay are new to the concept of multipotentiality, but like so many of our guests, once they learn about it, it really hits home.
So we thought we'd have some fun in this episode, in the first part of our conversation, and go over multipotentiality to see how they react to the idea. It's like the pulling back of a curtain in real time.

Both Steve and Patty have craved variety, new projects and change, and have gone through the usual ringer of confronting things that they "should" be doing. But they share how being open to various interests has shaped their lives, and even led to them finding each other in the first place.
(This is a very anti-should episode.)
So we then pivot to how multipotentiality nurtures their relationship. Patty & Steve have a wonderful love story that they very much use to inspire other couples to rediscover and maintain the joy in their own relationships.
Their approach is through creative date ideas and intentional communication, "Turning the mundane into the fundane." Do you want to recapture the excitement of those early days of dating? Create excitement out of every day tasks like grocery shopping and cooking? These are the relationship coaches for you.
Patty & Steve have a 6 week couples coaching program, the "Reignite Us" program, that "helps couples rediscover the joy, spontaneity, & playfulness that make every day feel like the honeymoon phase." The coaching combines Steve's analytical, engineering background with Patty's training as a mental health therapist.
Geared primarily towards couples generally 5+ years into their relationship, it's a great way to throw off the shackles of routine and repetition through simple, fun activities.

Apryl Schlueter joins me this week to chat about her journey as a multipotentialite, her fascination with productivity and accomplishment, and her new podcast! It's called The Accomplishment Project, and the promo trailer is out now. If you are catching up on this episode at a later date, you'll likely see a few new episodes as well.
This is a topic that extends nicely from the conversation last time with Becca, which revolved around the question of "completion" - Are multipotentialites guided by the normalized concept of completion, in the sense of, "When you start something, you should finish it"?
Today's conversation appears similar, but as Apryl points out, "accomplishment" is a much more nuanced, and ultimately, emotional experience.
We feel different about accomplishing something, a feeling that may have little to do with actually completing said project or task. It's as much about the journey, and the experience of pursuing an idea.
Now, "completion" may still be integral to the activity, however you want to define it, but "accomplishment" may be different perspective. "I completed my degree," versus, "I accomplished the learning and self-growth that I was looking for."
Apryl is an expert on this, having devoted many of the past years to researching and understanding it, as part of her coaching and community leadership. Of course, as a true multipotentialite, that followed on from studying engineering, working in IT, being a high school math teacher, working in administration and finance, and becoming an entrepreneur, not to mention a busy mom of two teenage boys.
Like many of our guests, she is set up on Substack, so reach out to her there, find her on YouTube at The Cheerful Mind, and if you want to go deeper, you can contribute to The Accomplishment Project by filling out the Contribute to the Project form on the website.
Apryl is gathering data and stories regarding accomplishment, productivity, mindset, and what it takes to actually get stuff done. You don’t have to know exactly how you want to contribute - just share what excites you most right now!

"I haven't lived a less-full life because I don't complete every single thing I start."
Last month I was fortunate to be able to attend Camp Indie, for the fourth time!, to meet lots of new folks, to meet people in person for the first time, and of course to see old friends again as well.
One of those is Becca Campbell, who I've now seen three times in the past year! Becca was at Camp in 2024, then the Everything Conference, and here we are in the same time and place again in 2025.
Result: We're not missing this chance to record a podcast episode together, in person.
It's one of those moments where we go in not necessarily knowing what we want to chat about, or what the outcome or objective will be, but simply doing something because we can.
Fortunately, I've been putting together a spreadsheet of topics and discussion ideas that are of particular pertinence to multipotentialites, to help steer conversations in a certain direction. You can find said spreadsheet here, and I'm sure it will give you some inspiration for what you'd like to talk about when you come on the show😉
Becca and I zeroed in on this question of "completion." What does that concept mean to multipotentialites? How are different projects and interests approached, maintained, and sometimes left unfinished? How do we feel about that? Are we guided by the normalized concept of completion in the sense of, "when you start something, you should finish it"?
I think it's pretty easy to say the answer to that is, "no," but of course it can't be that simple. Multipods still struggle with starting things, finishing things, circling back to things, and trying to make sense of it all, particularly with how we feel about all that. There's a balance required between perseverance and letting go that is of a prescient nature to us.
Becca shares her personal experiences and perspectives on balancing various interests, her ongoing writing projects, and the concept of 'completion' in her life. I found it particularly poignant learning about her experience in completing college and how that process shaped her, and then more recently, her approach to writing a book about traveling with a neurodivergent family. These experiences highlight the importance of giving oneself space to grow and revisit projects.
Becca is active on Substack, and to connect with her, follow her projects and explore these ideas and more, it's the best place to go. That makes a few guests already who are set up on this platform (don't forget to check out Ross and Eric as well), so there may be something to Substack that works for multipotentialites!

Our guest today shares her experience of being 18 years in a cult, and finally getting out of it, which has led her to helping others escape and recover as well. Gerette Buglion is the founder of "Living Cult-Free," a non-profit organization that helps survivors and those close to them emerge from the experience of being in a cult.
She also hosts a podcast of the same name, and the producer of that podcast happens to be our own Vanessa Hennessey! Vanessa joins us as well to talk about her perspective putting stories together for the podcast, and making sure they are told in an honest, authentic and delicate way.
Cults are something far more common than you might think, and they take on all shapes and sizes. It's not just your stereotypical 'retreat from society, eat and dress the same way, follow the leader' stuff. Most cults in fact don't realize they are one. As you can imagine, it's very subversive.
But Gerette has a very succinct and profound way of describing it: "A cult, or any authoritarian system, is based around the concept that they know and understand you better than you know yourself." They, or typically the leader, think you should trust them more than you trust yourself.
And that marks the difference between a cult and a genuinely positive, healthy and empathetic group or individual: in a cult, the leader is looking out for their own interests and gain, typically money and power. In a healthy and supportive system, if there even is a leader, they are helping you on your journey of personal growth and understanding, with no personal gain to themselves beyond being happy for you.
It's a fascinating topic that we just start to scratch the surface of, but of course there is the podcast where you can learn much more, and hear some profound personal stories.
So check out Living Cult Free, the podcast, and if this is a topic that particularly speaks to you, be sure to reach out to Gerette, she would love to have that conversation.

Martie McNabb is my guest today, someone whom i think a lot of our viewers and listeners know, and not just virtually but in person!
Martie is great at getting out to some of the big events over the years that bring people together, including Camp Indie and the Everything Conference of 2024. I was fortunate to see her at both, and then we even met up again about three weeks after the everything conference on her way back to Vermont from a conference in Montreal.
I love when things work out and people can make a detour for a visit, something I always try to do too if I'm travelling.
And connection, community and sharing is the theme of our conversation today. Martie has developed this wonderful idea of people sharing quick, heartfelt stories based around an item of personal significance, often from a loved one or from a poignant memory.
It's called Show and Tale, and Martie uses it to bring people together for anything from team-building events to family reunions or break-the-ice workshops. Ideally it's done in person, but virtually is an option too, and to that end Show and Tale has a counterpart in Martie's fabulous podcast, "Things that Matter."
Things that Matter is more of a one on one conversation, podcast-style, but again with that focus on sharing the stories and memories behind an object.
Remember in the days before digital? Letters in the mail, printed photographs, pen and notebook, ticket stubs and physical maps - Show and Tale takes us back to that emphasis on real, tactile things that we can hold in our hand, that have a scent and texture, and that in turn remind us of a person, a place or an experience.
It's a really neat idea.
Martie tells us all about it here today, and go check out Things That Matter on YouTube or your favourite podcast app to hear more great stories and inspiration.

Your kids are getting older, moved out or soon to do so, you're divorced and setting up a new life with a new partner. Moving across the continent, and to a new country, no less. You're entering a phase of life full of opportunity, flexibility, change, excitement and a pile of unknowns.
So many options for a multipotentialite! Where to begin?
Eric Larson's answer is to follow his heart, his instinct and his nose. He embarked a year ago on a journey without many definitive objectives or benchmarks, an entirely new season of life with different commitments and responsibilities. For someone so used to caregiving and community, it's a particularly big change. But Eric is embracing it with calm perspective and an open mind.
Eric quotes Brené Brown in referring to, as opposed to a "crisis," a "midlife unraveling" - a time for undoing many of the things that defined the most recent phase of life, and building something new.
It's just that in his case, he's not exactly sure where it will lead him, and what the journey will be like. He's keeping an open mind, not focusing on specific goals, and concentrating on just being in the moment.
Eric's new life in Montréal, Québec is all about sharing observations and forging new connections, in a new language and culture as well. We chat about Québécois French and honouring a language, and how he copes with isolation and distance, while slowly easing into his partner Dan's life and her family.
If you are in a similar phase in life, particularly with kids moving on and a massive change in routine and responsibility; or if you've experienced this already, or can see it coming in the near future: reach out to Eric with your thoughts and perspectives. He would love to hear from you, and compare notes.
In particular, subscribe to his Substack newsletter, "The Rogue Learner," and watch the journey unfold!
