What happens when someone who's never seen classic 70s sci-fi watches it with their other half who's a total geek for it? Will they love it, hate it, or ask for a divorce on the spot? The Mackem (Katie) and the Manc (Colin) from England are watching all 48 episodes and, for you the wonderful listener, we hope there's some humor and fun comments. You can also listen and watch at the same time, or just enjoy the banter. Warning - there's a few rude words! The Mackem and the Manc: Space: 1999 watch-through
Episode 52: To everything that might have been (Space: 1999)

To everything that might have been... to everything that might yet be.

The last podcast. Part 2 of our wrap up begins with paying tribute to the passing of Clifton Jones, so soon after Prentis Hancock leaving us. Computer Kano was always a fun character, jousting with Victor on intellectual matters, protecting computer like a proud father. We both hope you enjoy your life in the next world.

We also then discuss how two of the stars being in X Files has passed Katie by. Better late than never.

The rest of the pocast is devoted to how we feel about the show, what Katie really though of it as a Space: 1999 virgin, what went right and what went wrong. We discuss our favourite memories and hopes for the future of '99. Finally, after the credits, we will tease the subject of our next podcast series. We sincerely hope you will join us on our next sci-fi adventure.

Thank you everyone for being with us on our journey. Our emails and social are always open for any comments or feedback.

Episode 51: Year 2 Movies and Bonus Material (Space: 1999)

To everything that might have been... to everything that might yet be.

The last podcast. With a ting of sadness we wrap out what remains of the Space: 1999 universe, starting with the two Year 2 movies, Destination Moonbase Alpha and Cosmic Princess. What's not the like about seeing the pink gimp mask dude one last time, this time with a silly voice over? And Katie finally gets to meet Oliver Onions. Was it worth the wait?

We then sweep up the semi-unofficial content, with:

Message from Moonbase Alpha - https://youtu.be/qqW1xHgwZHQ?si=pKbl6_2sia7qIiMK

The Return of Victor Bergman - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZWm80QEVEQ

Return to Moonbase Alpha - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6EOcbQzZe4

(not all links will work in all countries - sorry!)

We discuss what did (or didn't happen) to Season 3 and the remake promised for Space: 2099, and it their absense enjoy the brilliant fan-made trailer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iF-4zXbZC8&pp=ygUZYW50b24gcGhpbGxpcHMgc3BhY2UgMTk5OQ%3D%3D

We also give Katie a taster of the audiobooks by Big Finish in the brilliant teaser at https://youtu.be/Tipx1MrxRTA?si=0F6TVJEuKjjLZffD

In Part 2 of this episode we will discuss our feelings on the show and hint at the subject matter of our next podcast series.

The Mackem and the Manc: Space: 1999 watch-through
Episode 50: God's Will (Space: 1999)

The second of our two bonus pods see us pay tribute to the best moustache in showbizness, Prentis Hancock, who sadly left us earlier this month. Playing the pivotal role of 2nd in command, Paul Morrow, we remember him for all his magnificence (just don't mention the magic mushrooms).

Moving on to the main event, we watch the fan edit God's Will - a great vision by Eric Bernard who spent years re-tooling the episode of War Games to explain away the differences between year 1 and year 2. To be honest, it's great seeing all the old cast again. You can catch him at http://www.space1999.org/features/articles_interviews/ericbernard_interview1.html - sadly his site space2099.com seems to be gone.

Then normally Colin would set a quiz for Katie but oh no - it's the turn of John Humpries of the BBC quiz show Mastermind and we try and see if we can go out-do Space: 1999 mega fan Samira Ahmed. We also run through a list of other famous celebrity fans of the show, only a couple are on the 'oh no' list we promise. YouTube link to Samria's performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6JTqf295Q8

Episode 49: Into Infinity/Day After Tomorrow (Space: 1999)

Our first of our three bonus pods sees us visit Into Infinity/Day After Tomorrow - so good they named it twice. Filmed between Year 1 and 2, this is an almost-Space 1999 episode, sharing a lot of the cast and crew. We have a lot of fun spotting the 99-isms amongst what was the highest of brow children's TV programme. Fred hadn't even got the gig, so may be he wasn't responsible for all of the jazzing-up/dumming down of Year 2, judging by this.

We have Brian Blessed being very non-shouty, Nick Tate being the main man, an annoying proto-Young Sheldon, Einstein for dummies, Katie actually being ok about Spring the dog being left behind, the peach melba woman no longer being alive and radio-active having an annoying hyphen.

Episode 48: The Dorcons (Space: 1999)

Oh no! It's the final episode of the show (but not of the podcast - rest assured). The Dorcons is one of the better year 2's although you have to forgive the missing ceilings and sparse set decorations. The budget really had been blown.

We've the wonderfully evil Malik, Dr. Who being old and a bit slow, the old woman from the end of the last Star Wars movie being - well - official and a lot of recycled props. But this is a Maya episode, her range of emotions is splendid as she is put to the test as a brain stem doner. She even asks Helena to kill her, and Tony didn't say a word.

Episode 47: The Immunity Syndrome (Space: 1999)

As the most famous Mackem on the internet, Katie starts the pod celebrating some amazing Sunderland-related news. Then we quickly move on to the penultimate episode of Year 2, The Immunity Syndrome. There's John wearing a strange ski mask thing, Tony getting space rabies, the girls flying a glider and an amazing red shirt body count. There's also a famous dad, which Katie gets before the opening credits have even rolled. So much for teasing that one.

Post-pod we take an article from 1977 about the Landau-Bain's bedroom habits, which is actually two sentences on them not going to bed on an argument, and the rest about their life style. We boo-hoo about the fact they 'only' had a five storey house in Beverly Hills, find out about how they met, and about Martin's secret passion. Spoilers: it's not Tony's homebrew.

Episode 46: Devil's Planet (Space: 1999)

So after there being no Spectre in the Seance Spectre, there's no Devil in the Devil's Planet.  What you do get though is whip-wielding red lycra clad BDSM statuesque women running a dodgy prison.  There's a plot about another planet which kills them (but not us) but we are just too distracted by John becoming a boy toy.

For some reason (probably money) there's only John in it.  We also get Bill and a new character who's name Colin gets wrong yet again.  At least he remembered she was in Aliens.  We discuss future James Bonds, the phone box being back again, how flesh burns but clothes don't, how everyone is crap at dying and Basil getting the gig to make-up all the pretty women.

Episode 45: Dorazk (Space: 1999)

As a special birthday podcast treat to Katie, Colin asked Kathryn Leigh Scott - one of the stars of the Space: 1999 episode "Dorzak" - to record a little message for her. It just so happens that we'd just done the episode on the pod, so it fit right in. And for the fans out there I'm sure there's a few bits in there that will be of interest to the Space: 1999 community.

Link to the full video: https://youtu.be/oBdc_Z1ZiNk

As we recorded that after the podcast, the rest is our normal gubbins of what-what-what-ness, including Alan falling in love, Katie liking the dress, but not with appendicitis, us not really getting onboard with Dr. Ed, and just where was John?

Episode 44: The Seance Spectre (Space: 1999)

Ok let's get it out of the way.  There isn't a spectre or ghost and there's barely a seance.  There, done.  Katie was very disappointed to hear that.  There is the lovely Carolyn Seymour though, who is proper sci-fi royalty.

What you do get is a batshit crazy guy with too much hair ragging through Moonbase Alpha asserting that planet of the week is habitable, when in reality it nearly kills John and Maya.  Until she turns into a plant.  And a child version of herself.

The security guards are particularly inept in this episode; it's one thing being no good against Darth Fish, it's another being hapless against too much hair man when there's one of him and two of them.  Ken Hutchinson - who plays Ged/Greg Sanderson (another Colin mess up on the names) - seems to play this type of character often, as a trawl through YouTube reveals.

Post-pod we tell the true story of Christmas through the eyes of the Space: 1999 crew.

Episode 43: The Bringers of Wonder (Space: 1999)

Oh yes it's the two parter as a two hour podcast. Will our stamina hold out? Colin's bladder? Katie's wine supply? Who knows - actually we do as we've just published the episode. We only had one domestic. I think.

The Bringers of Wonder is a cracking rollocking two-parter which sees the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha (apart from John) brain-roofied into thinking their wives/boyfriends/former-dodgy-professor have to come to rescue them. Guess what? They are actually blood filled eyeball shower curtain monsters from another planet. Happens all the time.

Diana Morris is a brilliant bitchy maneater, one of the earthbound three trims his hedge, Tony fights over Maya with his arm-wrestling brother, Dr. Vincent is punching, Katie finds out how much electricity is in her brain and Alan has a girlfriend.

Episode 42: The Lambda Factor (Space: 1999)

So we've The Troubled Spirit's slightly lesser cousin as a young blonde with a tight perm can do magic tricks, turn Maya into a caterpillar and force John into telling us that he loves us all.  Even you Colin (manc) who completely gets the opening scene wrong.

It's actually quite a good episode this, with the emphasis on the metaphysical and even haunted house type spooky stuff, as John relives the time when he left people to die of Venusian space herpes.  I'm sure you can get a cream for that now.  Maya turns into a bonking chimp, there's lots of marble action, Luigi gets annoyed because he can't win at Connect 4 and the Austin Powers time travel special effect makes an early debut.  Groovy baby!

Post-pod we played the only Space: 1999 game we could find - written for the Oric and a beautiful piece of 8-bit treasure.

Episode 41: Space Warp (Space: 1999)

We think this is the funniest episode we've done yet, but then again not every episode has pink gimp masks and Maya turning into every creature you could imagine (and some you haven't). So they are rich seams to mine.

We've John and Tony going off to a derelict spaceship and not finding a xenomorph, Maya with a lot of hair in medical, Alan being the primary action hero we all know and love and Helena not knowing how many penises the at-deaths-door alien possesses. There's something about a space warp too but we've totally forgotten about this week's MacGuffin once Maya turns into her dad/Dinny Powell.

Episode 40: The Beta Cloud (Space: 1999)

The 2nd of the Freddie episodes sees Darth Vader invade Moonbase Alpha, John and Helena go off on holiday to Monaco and Dave Prowse takes a fire extinguisher in the nether region. Yes boys and girls, it's a Freddie Special.

It was brave of us to take on Beta Cloud and Space Warp back to back, but for you dear listeners we are up for the challenge. The first of the two crazies sees Darth Fish invade Moonbase Alpha and completely tear up the place. You see Alan's chest hair and naval more than you do the two main stars, who took a break from the madness mid-episode to enjoy the south of France. We also get Bill and his casual erection of an electric fence, Sandra's eye shadow, a pointless 5 minutes shooting lasers at space mirrors, and Tony pisses on his chips royally with Maya.

To round things off, we pay tribute to the most evil man in the universe (not Fred Frieberger) himself with a mini David Prowse quiz, to celebrate the best thing to come out of the West Country since cider.

Episode 39: A Matter of Balance (Space: 1999)

Everyone say in a low chanting voice. Imhotep! Imhotep! It's the tiny spangly shorts episode of Space: 1999 and a rubbish anti-matter science one to boot. But first we go through the husbands of our notable guest star. And Through the Keyhole. And Pink Panther.

Aww it's Lynne being all wide-eyed and bouncy haired as she swoons her way from being Tony's homebrew partner in crime, to Imhotep's anti-matter pair off buddy. Maya becomes a monkey, the crap costume makes its first of three appearances as Thaed, we have roofy flowers, gay nightclub murials and gurning John the father figure. Episode 38: Seed of Destruction (Space: 1999)

It's the bad parting episode! 50 minutes of plot unravelled by John having his parting on the wrong side. How they strung this one out for nearly an hour who knows? Still at least you have us to entertain you.

We bookend today's episode with a what-what-what description of an AI revival of Space: 1999 and how Maya could have been Whitney Houston's mother. Sort of.

There's a crystal planet, hall of mirrors, slinky polyester pink jump suits, demonic laughing John, Alan being loyal, Helena being creeped out by John and a green death star 'laser'. This is a doppleganger episode, seems every sci-fi show had to have one.

The Mackem and the Manc: Space: 1999 watch-through
Episode 37: AB Chrysalis (Space: 1999)

We have a few false starts but I've left them in because we are all about keeping it real and stuff.  If not skip to about 3:30 minutes in.

AB Chrysalis is chock full of memorable moments.  We get John going full Captain Kirk, we see Sarah Douglas' belly button, Helena doesn't throw a comlock at John and JS Bach's great great great great great great great grandson plays 'C'.  Alan nearly dies of chlorine poisoning, there's lots of cool bouncing balls, Tony has a day off and Kate's one and only line is a shocker.

What happens when someone who's never seen classic 70s sci-fi watches it with their other half who's a total geek for it? Will they love it, hate it, or ask for a divorce on the spot? Episode 36: Catacombs of the Moon (Space: 1999)

It's hysterical woman time, throwing her lot in with an overbearing husband who keeps having premonitions that she'll burn to death. The moonbase has a fire storm. Who'd have thought it?

Doctor Vincent is rubbish at making artificial hearts, John buggers off in an Eagle so he's out of most of it, Colin mixes up the character Patrick Osgood with the footballer Peter Osgood, Katie tells a story about Barbara Bain as a nun and there's another macguffin element they go searching for down below the moon. Oh and Maya becomes a cat which she'd have been much better off as a bat.

Episode 35: New Adam, New Eve

Moonbase gets all biblical, and all wife swap, as the four main characters go down to the surface of a new Earth to be New Adam's and New Eve's. Lucky them, but not quite car keys in the bowl at a 70's party. There's God who was also Merlin too - handy that, who despite claiming to be the most wonderful sorcerer ever, can't even make animals out of balloons. Charlatan.

Yasko has loads of lines, again, Alan doesn't even launch an Eagle never mind crash one, John keeps refusing wine (much to Katie's disgust), Colin can't get over the amount of innuendo in this episode and there is the most basic of traps to lair the bad guy. He's behind you!

We also have a fun quiz on Italian voice actors which probably stretches the bounds of what is possible with our set up. Oh well at least no-one can say we didn't try.

Epsiode 34: Brian the Brain (Space: 1999)

Oh no! What have we done! We promised Katie's parents a nice cuddly episode with Bernard Cribbins and all they get is a murderous robot with a stupid sense of humour and a God complex. That's the last time we get invited for Sunday Dinner.

In another "meet the parents" special, we visit Brian the Brain, a psychotic robot hell bent on living forever, or at least to the end of Act 2. There's a tender moment with John and Helena that Colin doesn't talk over, no home brew and Maya turning into zombie Bernard. What would the Doctor say?

Episode 33: The Mark of Archanon (Space: 1999)

Our noteable guest star this week is something who is most famous for having one scene as a dead person with pebbles over his eyes. And he's a Sir. Although we haven't a clue why. He's also dressed as an egyptian/roman/pagan person with a boy son thing with a dreadful haircut. Basil and Connie have their work cut out with the dot-to-dot eye makeup, and Veronica turns up as both his dead wife and his future. Alan plays rugby, there's a strange extra in "Bluey" and the episode zips along lovely as we don't have John shouting at everyone.

We then turn our attentions to Christen Anholt, the son of Tony (who plays Tony) in the show. For pod research purposes we watched his popular show Relic Hunter, specifically the episode where he film his one and only piece of TV with his dad around the year 2000. Sadly Tony died shortly after, and we are so happy they got the chance to do this. So please enjoy our little moment discussing Tia Carrera, Boyzone and how the 90's loved over-saturated colours.
