Our question today is: What happens after we die? We talk about heaven and hell, The Day of the Dead and skull faces.
We visit Ilia Delio's website for several juicy quotes. Here and here. And also this quote to chew on: "
"A person is a center of consciousness expressed in a particular matrix of matter, as if the entire universe (if indeed consciousness is the stuff of the universe) is compacted into this particular material form. In this respect, every person is the universe aware of itself (as Teilhard noted). To put this another way, there is no universe apart from the active centers of personal consciousness; each person is the universe come to self-consciousness."
Marci reads Mary Oliver's poem "When Death Comes."
Laura reads Teilhard de Chardin's poem, "Aging/Dying Prayer"
There are two different reading options for the second reading and the gospel.
We explore the story of Jesus raising the widow's son as our gospel reading.

We talk about what posture we take in the world and what is the best "posture" to fight evil or unconsciousness?
Jung's answer to "will the world survive?" "As he did so often, Jung saw the individual as the key to the future: If there are enough individuals who are conscious, who recognize the reality of the opposites, who have done sufficient work on themselves to face and manage the opposites in themselves, then we might avoid this most horrendous of tragedies."

23rd Sunday in the Kingdom of Heaven is Now time. Lots of laughter as we tackle some very tough readings.
We ask ourselves (and you) this question: "What tempts me in my daily life? What is hard for me to renounce or let go of?"
"If it is true that the ability to be puzzled is the beginningof wisdom, then this truth is a sad commentary on the wisdom of modern man. Whatever the merits of our high degree of literary and universal education, wehave lost the gift for being puzzled."
----Psychoanalyst Erich Fromm
We mention this quote from Thomas Merton: “My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always, though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.”
Laura was searching for this this part of Rumi's poem, The Great Wagon.
"Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I’ll meet you there."
Laura quotes Erich Neumann on a provocative message in the Psyche and Eros myth
Marci tells the story of St. Francis, his father, and the Bishop.
And much more!!

22nd Sunday in The Kingdom of Heaven is Now Time. We explore the Hebrew word for humility.
Excerpts quoted from this site. “How am I using the Divine gifts that have been given to me? Am I reaching my own potential for greatness?”
This sentiment is powerfully encapsulated in the Hebrew word for humility, anavah. While the English word humility originates from the Latin, humilis, meaning meekness or lowliness, anavah stems from the word anu, meaning “to respond.”
Also found this lovely quote related to this concept. “Every person should have two pockets. In one pocket should be a piece of paper saying: ‘I am but dust and ashes.’ When one is feeling too proud, reach into this pocket and take out this paper and read it. In the other pocket should be a piece of paper saying: ‘For my sake was the world created.’ When one is feeling disheartened and lowly, reach into this pocket and take this paper out and read it. We are each the joining of two worlds. We are fashioned from clay, but our spirit is the breath of Adonai.”
(Tales of The Hasidim Later Masters, Martin Buber, p.249-50)
Marci uses the word theophonies -

We dive deep into all three readings. Laura references the book " Abraham : the man and the symbol ; a Jungian interpretation of the biblical story."
What Laura forgot, "... the Sages also divided the functions of the angels’ mission into three: to herald the birth of Isaac, to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, and to heal Abraham. "One more quote from the book, “In the heat of the day” the sun is at its apogee. Midday heat, especially in the Middle East, can affect one’s wakefulness. Perhaps Abraham dozed off as he sat at the door of his tent, and entered a hypnagogic state. At the same time, his psychic receptiveness increased, as often happens when one is half awake and half asleep. In this state, a different consciousness may emerge—the greater, broader, and clearer consciousness of a great vision. Many cultures symbolize this consciousness of and receptiveness to the divinity by a depiction of the sun at its zenith, generating extreme heat."
We have a lengthy discussion of the story of Martha and Mary, “martyr syndrome” and wonder: could we all be Mary?
Marcie offers some wonderful stories about of St. Francis including Francis' visit to the Sultan.

14th Sunday in the Kingdom of Heaven is Now.
(Please alert us if you don't see hyperlinks in your show notes!)
We discuss the power of home. Laura mentions "nous," a concept she's heard from Ilia Delio. Heavy stuff.
"Pierre Teilhard de Chardin saw the emergence of a new type of person with computer technology, an evolution of consciousness that led to a new level of cosmic life, what he called the “noosphere” (from the Greek “nous” or mind). The noosphere is the natural culmination of biological evolution, an organic whole, now on the level of thought, destined for some type of superconvergence and unification."
-- Ilia Delio.
Also the important concept of Inflation. (Jungian term).
[Inflation] should not be interpreted as … conscious self-aggrandizement. Such is far from being the rule. In general we are not directly conscious of this condition at all, but can at best infer its existence indirectly from the symptoms. These include the reactions of our immediate environment. Inflation magnifies the blind spot in the eye. [“The Self,” CW 9ii, par. 44.] -- from Daryl Sharp’s Jung Lexicon
Another mention of the book, The Gift, by Lewis Hyde

Marci shares some of her research on Julian of Norwich.
Laura struggles in this episode. We confess: some of the material (latter third) was added later.
Lots of poetry in this episode, including a section from Blessing the Bread by Lynn Unger, Marci's poem, Learning Slowly, and Laura’s poem, Take One Bite.
Laura mentions the book Death by Suburb: How to Keep the Suburbs from Killing Your Soul.
