117 Veronique Lee - Terpene science sense
Veronique Lee, once a partner at revolutionary sustainable beauty and fashion retailer Modavanti, brings over 15 years of sustainability and wellness expertise to her CandaScent Labs venture. In this episode, Veronique shares the emerging science-based necessity for supporting Olfactory Wellness and her passion for sustainability through the lens of her Economics and Political Science education. CandaScent Labs is a health and wellness aroma brand with a collection of products built to promote whole-body wellness through the olfactory system.

Later in her career, while working with chemists on cannabis research and product development, Véronique learned more about cannabinoids and terpenes. She became interested in exploring the synergy of plant compounds, particularly beta-caryophyllene, and its applications towards wellness. This motivated her to create healthier, synthetic-free aroma products supported by terpene science, removing the elusive "fragrance" ingredient. Thus, CandaScent Labs was born. "Canda", from the Latin, means candid, pure, clean, transparent, kind – all hallmarks of the brand's DNA. CSL's formulations harness the synergetic power of botanical ingredients beyond Beta-Caryophyllene, to elevate your mood, reduce your stress, boost your brain, and fortify your immunity with ingredients that possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Véronique graduated from Stanford University with a BA in Economics and Political Science and has served as a board member of Friends Without A Border and an Advisory Board Member of the Fashion Institute of Technology. In addition to her roles in beauty and fashion, Véronique also brings experience working for one of the largest grain merchandising companies in the world, where she saw how the desire for efficiency and profitability was transforming how our food was made, sourced, processed, and marketed. These processes were not healthy for our planet or our health. When she experienced the same thing happening in fashion, she began bringing artisan and eco-friendly brands to market.

113 Susan Parker - Power of the seed
Susan M Parker, author of Power of the Seed: Your Guide to Oils for Health and Beauty published in 2015, is one of the first books to focus exclusively on the lipid or carrier oils rather than as dilutents for aromatherapy or their use in the massage and beauty industry.
In this episode, Susan talks about her continuing fascination with plant lipids, using her herbal background to link botanical families as she educates others on the types of oils they produce.

Inspired by an herbal apprenticeship in the early1990’s, Susan established SOLUM&HERBE an herbal apothecary in 1996 focusing on skincare and topical treatments. Making herbal extracts, including oil infusions from her gardens, awakened a desire to know more about the infusing oils.

Unable to find a comprehensive guide to understand these carrier oils better, she began to learn about them.

With an art background but little chemistry, Susan worked with a chemist friend to understand the basic chemistry of lipid oils. To help ground the learning process, she began writing up her notes and self-published a small booklet on the subject in 2001.

Drawing on her Art degrees from the 1970s, she cut and pasted the booklet together and made 100 copies available to the local herbal community in Northern California. In 2015 Power of the Seed, much expanded and further researched, was published by Process Media, Port Townsend, WA.

A student of natural health, gardener, herbalist, flower essence devotee, mother, and now grandmother, Susan studied herbalism with Pam Montgomery and David Hoffman in the 1990s. After 22 years of creating and producing a range of products, SOLUM&HERBE ended production in 2018. Susan continues to research and teach about lipid oils online.

112 David Winston - Herbalist & Alchemist
David Winston, RH (AHG) is an internationally known lecturer, author, ethnobotanist, and the founder of Herbalist & Alchemist. For over 45 years, David has been studying, practising, teaching, and researching Chinese, Western/Eclectic, and Southeastern American herbal traditions. In this episode, David clarifies sound-byte popular herbal misinformation. Many ancient herbal traditions address an energetic approach that he has seen as far more effective than a single herb approach to treating disease, envisioning a sustainable future for medicine as a synthesis of Western and complementary botanical medicine.

David's world-renowned two-year herbal studies program, the David Winston Center for Herbal Studies, has been educating Herbalists, Physicians, Nurses, Naturopathic Physicians, Veterinarians, and Nutritionists in the art and science of clinical herbal medicine since 1980.

David has one of the largest private herbal research libraries in the U.S. The Herbal Therapeutics Research Library has over 8000 volumes, from 1550 to present, and over 15,000 articles on file. This library is a working library used for research for the herbal and nutritional industry as well as for his writing and for Herbalist & Alchemist.

David was one of the professional herbalists who founded the American Herbalists Guild, the first professional herbalists' organization in the US, which certifies clinical herbalists. He is on the professional membership review committee. David Winston has been on the Review Committee of the Botanical Safety Handbook, which produced a significant information resource, which the entire botanical industry, from manufacturers to researchers, relies upon.

He is the clinical herbal consultant to hundreds of prominent physicians (MDs, NDs, DOs, DCs) throughout the US, Canada and Europe. David has authored hundreds of articles and a number of books on herbs.
