On this week's weekly best of John and Gordy, they continue their conversation with Dr. Tim Slekar from the podcast BustED Pencils on WMDX 92.7. The discussion focuses entirely on the Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Ryan Walters, and his stated quest to "drive out Marxism in the schools."
Dr. Slekar takes a heavily ironic and sarcastic stance, suggesting that if students were truly learning enough about Marxism to threaten the country, they'd have to be proficient in it, which he implies is highly unlikely since they are already struggling with reading and math.
After those two segments, John & Gordy invites Sha'Ron Buie, the Associate Director of the Just Dane Organization, onto the show to talk about the ongoing work around community justice and reentry in Dane County. He discussed how data can drive smarter policy — especially when addressing racial disparities in the justice system. Sha’Ron reflected on his time at Just Dane and how lived experience is extremely crucial in helping formerly incarcerated people rebuild their lives. He will be honored at an organization called MOSES for his community impact.
We end off the weekly best of John & Gordy with Mike McCabe who joins the show today to talk about his most recent substack article titled, Time To Grow The F UP. He talked about adulthood means facing reality without sugarcoating it or giving up hope. You accept that life includes loss and struggle, but also beauty. Then he quotes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who talks about how both youth and old age involve limits — when you’re young, adults limit you; when you’re old, your body does. Kareem says aging means letting go of ego and accepting change instead of fighting it. John agrees and states, "Who doesn't love Kareem?"
