Chet Erwin, CEO of newly formed CherCo joins host Michael Haning. Chet Erwin has over 35 years of experience in starting and expanding successful companies in the energy sector.
Chet began his career as one of the founders of Hanover Compression Company “Hanover” (now Archrock: AROC) where he served as Chief Operating Officer and President of the Operating Board. Highlights during Chet’s tenure:
- Hanover was incorporated in October of 1990, Hanover quickly acquired 3 major compression rental companies in TX and LA;
- Hanover completed its IPO in July 1997 and began trading on the NYSE;
- Hanover went from a 4 person Texas operation in 1990 to over 5,000 worldwide employees by 2001.
Chet co-founded Valerus Compression Services “Valerus” (now AXIP) in August of 2004 where he served as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Operating Board. Chet’s second compression venture was equally as impressive as the first, highlights below:
- Chet’s execution and experience at the helm was evident with 2005 revenues increasing 445% from 2004;
- In 2006, Valerus grew revenues another 120% and was quickly becoming a force within the compression space;
- Valerus continued to quickly gain market share and by its fifth full year of business was the second largest gas handling company worldwide.
Michael and Chet have a great conversation about the compression industry.
Curtis Roys of Patton Lubrication Systems is back on the podcast. Curtis has discovered something that is of great importance to the gas compression industry - your lube rates might not be what you think they are. Divider block systems are meant to be balanced, and from what Curtis is seeing out in the field, most systems aren't balanced.
Jim Dettore joins host Michael Haning again to take a deep dive into engine bearings. What some of the things to look for when trying to identify issues, and how to identify wear patterns.
On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Jim Dettore, President at Failure Analysis Services, Inc.
With over three decades of machining background and over two decades working for Caterpillar dealers, Jim details his experience transitioning to failure analysis services.
What is the typical failure analysis procedure and what are the best practices? Jim gives a thorough walkthrough, skimming across the surface of the complexities involved in diagnosing the failure. He provides a multitude of questions to gather as much factual data as possible and interpret those facts and why the failure occurred.
Jim estimates that about 75% of failures are due to contamination and lack of cleanliness. Any time the compressor frame or engine is opened up, it risks contamination. The environment for servicing work should be contained and clean if at all possible.
Before the pandemic, Failure Analysis Services hosted 30 classes a year and is now offering in-person courses again. Check out their website for more details.

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes David Vannostran, Vice President of Operations at Ultimate Chemicals.
David shares tips on why using specifically designed chemical solutions makes sense for use on gas compressors. Simple degreasers can serve to remove oil from the system but they can cause problems in the long run.
David walks us through the founding of Ultimate Chemicals and the process of its Preventive Maintenance Flush (PMF). The PMF restores compressor cooling systems back to zero. The PMF is the bread and butter of Ultimate Chemicals.
Through hundreds of lab samples, David and Ultimate Chemicals have optimized several chemical formulas to provide solutions to the gas compression industry. Rust may be at the heart of many problems dealing with cooling systems.

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Jadwiga Pyzdrowski, Executive Assistant at Process Point Energy Services.
Jadwiga is a dedicated trailblazer and pioneer of her path. She is in her eighth year in the gas compression industry.
On day one of her career, she was rebuilding revamping packages—the first woman to have ever done that with Exterran. Jadwiga accelerated forward with shop and field experience from there. Varying from rural Oklahoma to the fast-paced Permian Basin, she's experienced tremendous variety in her young career.
Jadwiga believes that it was an opportunity to feed her learning every time she moved locations. It gave her an idea of the way different business units worked. These instances provided similar operations, same equipment, but different cultures and issues.
Patience, staying in touch with her network, and being open to opportunities have been instrumental to Jadwiga's success. She encourages those who are early on in their careers to ask questions—especially about industries you're not so familiar with.
Eight years into gas compression, Jadwiga has achieved what was her greatest goal—working internationally. It will be exciting to see where her future takes her.

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Kathy Norris, Vice President of ESG Innovations & Business Development at Kodiak Gas Services, onto the show.
Kathy is the first woman to have won the master's program from Caterpillar. She offers over 20 years of experience in electric power generation, fracking, and gas compression. Motivated by her drive to challenge herself and always learn something new, Kathy is now spearheading the ESG sustainability governance to meet the future needs of Kodiak's customers.
A critical question on Kathy's plate is how Kodiak can make its operations cleaner. And another is how to make its equipment more viable to move gas and provide electricity and power to the world. She details some of Kodiak's technology that provides CO2, NOx, and methane measurements. Through this, Kodiak can focus its efforts on mitigation systems and understanding where specific emissions are being released.
Kathy also dives into the future of litigation and the current challenges that face the gas industry. How do regulators and the industry define and understand terms like greenhouse gases?

On this episode of The Gas Compression Podcast, host Michael Haning welcomes Jason Herrick, President at Pantera Energy.
Pantera is based out of Amarillo, Texas, and was founded by Jason's father. He went out with a geologist and landman and started buying up fields from large oil and gas clearinghouses. Their strategy had been to look for more long-life fields to set up an asset base, then partner with other companies to service their pumps.
Before joining the operation in 2001, Jason went to the Netherlands with a consulting startup. There he gained people skills and learned the trades of the European environment.
When Jason started in 2001, Pantera had about 120 properties. At present, Pantera operates about 1,800 wells, employing a heavy acquisition strategy.
Behind their expansion success, Jason credits their ability to find ways to maximize production. Pantera has eliminated many contractor roles by training ground employees to handle their daily needs. Jason points out that the consistency gained from this has been invaluable.
Jason also discusses how they have weathered the pandemic and what they look forward to in 2022 and beyond.
