In the heat of summer I made my way to one of my favourite cities in the world, Shanghai to interview one of my favourite all time podcast hosts and creators, Amber Akilla. DJ, music curator, host of the friend crush podcast, Amber is iconic for her radical perspectives on feminism, culture and her life philosophy of being hot and having fun which has sparked many an interesting discussion on the possibilities for women and queer individuals in today's society. Jaguar Jonze is a longtime friend, whose titles are getting longer each time we meet. A Taiwanese Australian independent singer songwriter, visual artist, photographer and now certified freediving instructor, her message of empowerment is one that ties closely with her lived experience, as she continues to inspire audiences with her ability to balance vulnerability and strength in her work. While many others in the Taiwanese music industry may know Mia Min Yen aka 'Taiwan Mama' for being a powerhouse supporter of exporting Taiwanese music globally, to me she's a treasured long time friend and mentor. As one of my oldest friends in the music scene, Mia has taught me so much about what it means to support other women in music, not only through words, but action. This is a quality of hers that has allowed her to be adored by many of the globally established acts she works with such as 9m88, Sunset Rollercoaster, Elephant Gym and ØZI. This is the same quality that has given her the tenacity to hold Taiwanese Waves, a festival dedicated to showcasing Taiwanese music in New York's Summerstage for five years running now. I first met Chinese Australian singer songwriter and rapper Dizzy Dizzo aka Dominique Tsai back in 2018, and was floored (still continue to be!) by her impeccable work ethic and strong, independent spirit.
