'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' at the Beverly Theater
This week, we review FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS (1998, 118 minutes) Directed by Terry Gilliam.  Playing at The Beverly, November 26. For tickets and info: The Beverly Theater

It is 1971, and journalist Raoul Duke barrels toward Las Vegas—accompanied by a trunkful of contraband and his slightly unhinged Samoan attorney, Dr. Gonzo—to cover a motorcycle race. What should be a cut-and-dried journalistic assignment quickly descends into a feverish psychedelic odyssey. Director Terry Gilliam and an all-star cast, headlined by Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro, show no mercy in bringing Hunter S. Thompson’s excoriating dissection of the American way of life to the screen, creating a film both hilarious and savage.

Aspiring actor Edward undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. But his new dream face quickly turns into a nightmare, as he loses out on the role he was born to play and becomes obsessed with reclaiming what was lost. Writer-director Aaron Schimberg's latest film is a surreal, singular tale of one man's desire to self-actualize. Starring Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Adam Pearson (Under the Skin, Chained for Life) and Renate Reinsve (Oslo August 31, The Worst Person in the World).

'The Sundance Indigenous Shorts Tour' at The Beverly Theater
This week we review the Sundance Indigineous Shorts Tour, Nov. 1-3 at The Beverly Theater. Check out this 83-minute theatrical program featuring eight short films from Indigenous filmmakers: four from the 2024 Sundance Film Festival program, three from the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and one short film from the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. Started in 2021 as a virtual presentation in conjunction with our friends at museums, Native cultural centers, and arthouse cinemas, the 2024 tour continues as an in-person exhibition with partnered screenings in June and the program available to rent from July 2024 to March 2025. The curated selection reflects a variety of Native stories and showcases inventive, original storytelling from indigenous artists previously supported by the Festival. Sundance Institute has a long history of supporting and launching talented Indigenous directors including Erica Tremblay, Taika Waititi, Blackhorse Lowe, Sterlin Harjo, Sky Hopinka, Caroline Monnet, Fox Maxy, and Shaandiin Tome. Support for screenings is provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
