What a story of perseverance ANTHONY ARMSTRONG is! Scout don't exactly flock to Canyon, Texas to Division II school West Texas A & M. So, AAA played his way into the Intense Football League, playing in parking lots, instead of nicely manicured football fields. Then he played in the Arna Football League until finally being drafted by the Miami Dolphins. His story, knowledge of the game and amazing attitude makes for a great episode of The Approach Shot.
CHARLES (CHILI) DAVIS is one of the most feared power hitters of his generation. He hit 350 HR's, but it was his knack for driving in runs that he's most proud of. That, and his 3x World Series championships, his being named to the All Star team 3x, and his work with SabesWings to help eliminate financial toxicity for cancer patients. This is a powerful, funny and heart warming episode.
Not only is he a favorite of the Golden Bachelor universe, but he became a favorite on this summer's Bachelor in Paradise.
GARY LEVINGSTON is just as cool and smooth with us as he was on television. It's one of our favorite episodes ever as we laugh, share and peel back some layers of the man they call "Big G".
Despite one season with the Mets, JOHN VALENTIN will always be a Red Sox player to Red Sox Nation. Great glove, good pop, sensational post season player, Valentin is also a great story teller and gives us some insight on the great Red Sox/Yankees rivalry. He also talks golf, and tells us the oddest thing he was ever asked to autograph.
The most prolific QB/WR combination in Miami Dolphins history and arguably in NFL history was Dan Marino to Mark Clayton. Clayton came into the league in 1983 (the same year as Marino) and the two hooked up on 82 TD's together.
A 5x Pro Bowler and an All Pro, Mark talks Dolphins, tells some great Marino stories, talks about his continued friendship with Mark Duper and of course, his golf game.
In his triumphant return to The Approach Shot, World Series MVP BRET SABERHAGEN talks about his incredible 1985 World Series championship, pulls the curtain back on some off field practical jokes, about finding his birth family and updates us on the incredible work being done by his charity SABESWINGS, whose goal is to strike out medical financial toxicity.
He's a Super Bowl champion, a successful college coach at Aurora University, but DON BEEBE will forever be associated with knocking the ball out of Leon Lett's hands in Super Bowl in Super Bowl 27, with his Buffalo Bills losing 52-17. It's that "never give up" attitude that permeates every bit of his life, and is the title of his book- "Never Give Up- The Competitive Athlete's Devotional".
One of the premier base stealers of the modern era, OTIS NIXON not only stole a lot of bases, but he was a clutch hitter and made history by robbing Andy Van Slyke of a home run that is considered one of the greatest catches in MLB history.
But it's his battle with addiction, and how uses those experiences as the fire that fuels him that is so compelling.
He ran a 4.2 40 yard dash and Steelers head coach Chuck Noll once said he was the fastest player he'd ever coached. His wit is just as quick and it makes for a hilarious episode of The Approach Shot.
Mike "Spanky" Lavalierre is one of he most colorful guys to join us on The Approach Shot. His unlikely rise to the big leagues were offset with his incredible defense, strong work ethic and clutch hitting. He continued that excellence on the golf course, after he retired from baseball.
is it weird to have the beloved HOST of "DWTS", "Hollywood Squares" and "AFV" appear on our show as a GUEST?
Not even a little.
And man, is TOM BERGERON hilarious, an incredible story teller and a guy who feels like an old friend.
We got to yap with him for over an hour on this very special episode of The Approach Shot.
It’s a trip to Birdland, becoming an Angel, an amazing story about Cal Ripken Jr when he was 13 and so much more. We could have talked Doug DeCinces for 3 hours, though every second of this conversation had us on the edge of our seats!
Jeff Fassero won over 120 games in MLB, pitched for 16 years and even had 25 saves. Jeff has tons of great baseball stories, and then made our jaws drop when we found out how great a golfer he is. Get ready for baseball talk, golf stories and a lot of laughs!
He's a Super Bowl champion, a fiercely loyal New York Giant, an amazing talent on the field and in the booth, and maybe most importantly, a great father and Grandpa. PHIL SIMMS shares some personal thoughts on winning a Super Bowl, and then having to watch one from the sidelines. His love for his family, his teammates and golf are all on full display on this amazing episode.
How does a 7th round draft pick for the Chicago White Sox end up playing in the Super Bowl? And how does this same man end up on the baseball field with Michael Jordan (yes, THE Michael Jordan?) And then how does this two-sport athlete become an author, speaker, radio host and podcaster? ED SMITH III is all that, and this man has STORIES!!
JACQUE JONES had an incredibly successful 10 year career as an outfielder mostly with the Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs. He was a power hitting, defensive minded stud. He was also a first team All-American and part of the 1996 medal winning US Olympic baseball team. These days he chases around the OTHER little white ball.
SAMMIE COATES was an exciting deep threat wide receiver who talks about his time with the Steelers, his record setting college years at Auburn and now coaching. His meteoric rise to Head Football Coach at Columbia High School in Huntsville, AL has him smiling, teaching and putting together the Sammie Coates Golf Tournament.
Hall of Fame Coach DICK VERMEIL stops by the clubhouse and it feels less like an interview and more like a conversation with an old friend.
Coach talks with us about the victory that meant the most to him, about his love for players like Vince Papale, Ron Jaworski and his passion for philanthropy through golf, about his steadfast belief in Kurt Warner, about wine and golf. This was a true honor!
When you play in the most games, have the most sacks an most interceptions in your franchise's history (and help lead your team to TWO super Bowls) it's no wonder everyone calls REGGIE WILLIAMS the best defensive plyer in Bengals history. But it's his work off the field that makes him the proudest. The man; the warrior shares his story with us.
He is one of the 4 original members of AMBROSIA, has been its drummer for over 50 years and BURLEIGH DRUMMOND shares stories of the AMBROSIA'S studio work, their live performances, their influences (The Beatles, Beach Boys, Alan Parsons) and life as a hit making band. Burleigh also tells us how he got into golf at a young age, and how his dad was his golf influence. That's music to our ears!
