This episode blew my mind. Don’t miss it. I’m talking with John Lash. At 18, he pulled a pistol on someone and shot them dead. He got a life sentence in a US jail. Ep20: How To Make An Independent Feature Film
Alan Donohoe is an independent film maker in his 20s. Without industry backing he managed to write, fund, direct and star in a full length feature film. It's called "I Have A Bad Feeling About This."

It is an impressive, inspirational feat in itself - added to by the fact that it's a very funny, enjoyable film too.

They say every film is a miracle. With no industry support, this was a miracle of miracles.

How did it happen? Listen in to find out.

The Alun Parry Podcast – Ep 12 – How To Be An Attractive Person
David Alnwick is a successful comedy magician. There are many things I admire about Dave. He's super good at what he does. He is someone who is really up for life. Wherever there's something fun, there's Dave. And I've always been really struck by how good his social skills are.

His interactions with people always seem so easy. I always put that down to Dave just being Dave. He's a magician after all. I guess you need those social skills when paid to do close up magic at parties and the like.

But Dave describes himself as a geeky, socially awkward teenager. He transformed himself into an optimistic, confident, socially at easy person by becoming an expert in social psychology. Then applying it himself.

This is a completely different interview than the one I had planned. It's utterly fascinating.

You'll learn how to be an attractive person, the psychological formulas involved, and some of the experiments Dave used himself to get out of his comfort zone.

The Alun Parry Podcast – Ep 11 – Getting All Our Needs Met Without Conflict
Sarah Ludford has spent the last several years of her life immersed in the practice of Non Violent Communication (NVC).

NVC was developed by the inspirational psychotherapist Marshall Rosenberg. He sought to find a way to ensure that we all get our needs met without conflict. He wanted to understand why some appear to get pleasure from contributing to the lives of others, while some seem to get pleasure from causing hurt.

He found that we all have universal needs that we seek to get met. He developed a way of communicating that gets us in touch with each other's needs.
Sarah trained directly with Marshall, and now trains people about NVC herself. Marshall's ideas have been profoundly life changing for me. In this fascinating conversation, Sarah shares her insights into the process of Non Violent Communication, and how to use it in our daily lives.

The Alun Parry Podcast – Ep 09 – How To Live A Happier Life
Chris Allen is a long standing friend of mine.

He is a working class lad from Liverpool who had a meteoric rise in the world of academia. He became one of the youngest Professors in his field.

Then he walked away from it.

A fascinating story in itself. But it's what happens next that's really interesting. He started to see life in a different way.

This is a story of liberation. It is a thought provoking and vulnerably open conversation. Once you've heard it, you'll think about your own life in a different way.

The Alun Parry Podcast – Ep 08 – The First Woman Photographer In The Premier League
In this episode I'm talking to one of Britain's leading celebrity and commercial photographers Sharon Latham.

For the past 7 years she had one of the most high profile jobs in football photography, as the official photographer for Manchester City FC.

She was the first female Premier League photographer ever. We talk about breaking into a man's world.

Now freelance, she has already worked for rock icons such as Bruce Springsteen and Noel Gallagher.

It's an incredible story about an ordinary Lancashire woman who makes it big. She has some great tips for other photographers too - especially when it comes to her creative process.

The Alun Parry Podcast – Ep 07 – Talking With The “Enemy”
Have you ever hated someone because of their political beliefs? Have you ever dismissed people as "idiots" because they see the world differently from you? Maybe you even brand them as bad people - lacking something morally?

Be honest, how many friends do you have who hold political beliefs that are the polar opposite to you? Doesn't your Facebook News Feed just echo back your own view to you?

I realise that I don't have any friends on the Right of the political spectrum. I hang out with people who share my views and values. Comfortable, huh!

In this episode, I'm deliberately talking to someone whose politics are the opposite of my own. Shannon Whittington lives in the United States. She is a libertarian from the Right of the political spectrum. I'm in the UK and on the Left.

I spoke to Shannon to see if we could have a conversation about politics that remained friendly and non judgemental. Could we stay connected to the needs and feelings behind our respective world views? Could we have that rare thing - a human conversation about contentious issues without seeing each other as "the enemy"?

Did we manage it? Listen in and find out.

In this conversation, we talk about how public policy is being shaped by technological change. We look at how politicians and policy makers use innovation. We discuss how the big data revolution and artificial intelligence impacts political decisions.

It is a fascinating and insightful discussion with someone at the coal face of a new, digitally informed political landscape.

Dr Keith Jensen is an animal behaviourist who got interested in the animals that are human beings.

Interestingly, he digs deeper into human psychology by studying chimps, other apes and monkeys.
