This episode of places is the second part of my recordings from Italy this summer. It’s literally just one long recording in the afternoon from a third floor hotel balcony in the city of Amalfi, looking down onto the street and pedestrian promenade, and out over the docks and into the sea. Street traffic, seagulls and sparrows, and eavesdropped passerby conversations ebb and flow in this port city.
I checked out the new Toxic Avenger flick (and rewatched the original, of course.) Did some biking and birding to see an American Golden Plover and a Red Phalarope. Some close encounters of the birding kind. Watching some trailers before The Long Walk.

This episode of Places starts off with a recording on the island of Capri, Italy in the Giardini di Augusto at the Aphrodite fountain. Next up is the waves splashing against the boat as we ferried back from the island to Amalfi. Next is a spot along the Valle Delle Ferriere where I stopped to listen to Long-Tailed Tit calls (I think). Looking over the valley from Pontone I listened the church bells at noon. Next is a few days later from a cafe at the top of Pogerola to get a closer listen to those same noontime bells. Enjoy!
Back for season 6 of Switching title with a couple of life birds - a Willet and a Wood Stork. I went camping at Delaware Seashore State Park and it stormed most of the time, and I liked it. I hid in my car and counted the seconds after I saw lightning. I eventually make it to the beach with no rain. I found some minstrels at work. Fall is here.

This edition of Places is mid-July and, once again, out in the great Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware. The first 18 minutes is just sitting at the campground in the morning listening to birds, barking dogs, and nearby campers waking up. Then for 8 minutes we move over to a viewing platform in a marshy bay at Gordon’s Pond where I record until until some other birders notice my recorder. Pardon our bird chatter. The final 5 or 6 minutes are up on top of the Hawk Watch platform looking out over the dunes and onto the beach. Bugs, waves, gulls, small planes; all the good stuff!
I attempt to bike and hike my way up to Signal Knob in the Elizabeth Furnace Recreational Area to record some ambiences for Places. From the road, to Mud Hole Gap, to Strasburg Reservoir, to Signal Knob, and back. Hike-a-bike becomes the way frequently and quite quickly. I spot some Barred Owls and other good birds. I cross some streams, drink from a spring, and give myself reminders for next time; like use bug spray. I remember a dream where I was forced to be an actor. Finally, there’s a recap with a bike repair lesson from the bathtub.

This Places episode contains recordings made on a whim overnight campout in Delaware Seashore State Park. It rained a little on the way out there, but pretty much on my arrival a huge storm came through, and continued on and off over night. Luckily, in the morning it wasn't too bad, and and overall I really enjoyed my time being out in nature. (The nearby lightning strikes were scary!)
Driving and on the way to finally taking on a gravel bike race. Breaking down the new Switching Title season structure/timeline. Personal health updates, notes to self, and more challenge ideas. Race director speech, and enjoy the ride as I begin and finish and recap (with - of course - a gratuitous bird report).
Episode Tracklist:
1. Bobby Boomer - Reid (feat. Tim Catching)
2. Leaving You Behind - Pendulum
3. The Road - Boys With Wigs
4. Cutesy - The Mallard
5. Unnamed Demo from Rob's Place (feat. Shawn Cunning)
6. If I Ever Had Time - Reid
This episode of Places follows me along my trek hauling myself and my bike up to Signal Knob. Recording stops are the Bear Hollow Parking Lot where I started, Mudhole Gap, Strasburg Reservoir Road Parking Lot, a Strasburg Reservoir primitive campsite, somewhere up the steep incline to and at the Signal Knob tower. You will mostly hear wind and birds in the trees, creeks, and me.
Fresno Mocking Jays sound different than Fairfax Mocking Jays, and other thoughts on their behaviors. There was a battle between a Chickadee and a Cardinal back in VA, and a Sandpiper vibrates mud. I come across a cult in Fort Valley while I probably shouldn’t have been out hiking.
Happy 100!

3. Name of the Sacred Warrior Part II/Gravity - Reid May

This issue of Places contains stationary recordings from three locations in and around Fresno State University, California. I visited for a family thing, and in my downtime I sat in my brother's backyard reading and birdwatching, wandered through the Fresno State orchards, and on one walk I stumbled into the Animal Farm and breathed it in for as long as I could stand.
Starting things out in this season by finishing my ride on the C&O with a flat, or wrench, or maybe some other fun biking metaphor? I pretend to know about wildflowers, and especially just enjoy saying “bloodroot.” I find my own personal mallards and lots of other good callouts, including two rather ruddy yellow-rumpers. Went biking/birding to see a lifer at Burke Lake - a Red-necked Grebe (also private), then out to see what I see at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park.

Hope you enjoy listening to me work through dream songs! Project: Cardinal Watch and Hooded Merganser Voltron powers back at Leopold’s Preserve. Some ER ambience and health and biking talk from the C&O . So long Ani - cut well old friend!
This edition of Places has recordings on my way to and in a protest going on in Washington D.C. in mid February. The first six or so minutes are riding on the Metro, then another six are riding a connector Metro Bus, and the rest are three snapshot chunks in and around the protest happenings.
