North Brother Island is a small, abandoned island in New York City's East River, between the Bronx and Rikers Island. The “Ghost Blimp” refers to the mysterious 1942 incident involving U.S. Navy blimp L-8, which returned to land near San Francisco without its two-man crew. The blimp lifted off on a routine anti-submarine patrol during WWII but was later found drifting aimlessly and damaged—with the engines running, doors open, and all safety gear intact. No trace of the crew was ever found, and despite extensive investigations, their disappearance remains unsolved. The L-8 became known as the "Ghost Blimp" and remains one of the strangest aviation mysteries in American history.
