Sticky Jazz Interview Lily DeTaeye

A very deep, and enigmatic singer, Lily DeTaeye has been carving out her piece of the music industry with some very distinctive folkish sound songs, then turned "Dream Pop" as of late. A transplant from Des Moines Iowa to New York City, she is still an ambassador for the music scene in the midwest.

She has just released a few singles prepping for the live album at Iowa PBS studio 3. (Link will be below).

She is a prolific songwriter in her own right, taking on the "one song a day" challenge every November, which makes her love, and dread the month, almost as much as I do.

We discussed her lyrics, where they came from, or didn't cause many she can't remember. Working in a music hall that touring artists would rather not be there, also appears in her songs. No subject is taboo for her, just which ones find themselves into her music we ger to hear is the question.

Sticy Jazz Interview Josh Hight (P.I.N.E.S)

P.I.N.E.S. is the new project of Josh Hight, a motorcity born musician, who conducted this interview late night from his home near Brighton England. He was previously in the early 2000's post punk band "The Detachment Project", which showcased his musical prowess, just impressive there.

They have just released a very moving ethereal EP called "In His Wake", just 4 songs that have a similar undercurrent to them, but each song takes you from an ambient sound of the PNW, to the Fjords of Norway, somehow. He used some Brian Eno in there of silence as an instrument. We even sort of geeked out about that "Absence" of sound loaded up into the tracks. That is enough of a reason to listen to this EP.

He worked with Richard Norris of the 90s electronica band "The Grid", which I was already a fan of, and heard some of it this one.

The subject matter is dark, but easily hits you where you are supposed to feel it. More to come from this project, as they are in process of making more music at the time of reading this.

Link to the EP

Sticky Jazz Interview Jah Wobble

Jah Wobble is the original bassist for P.I.L. and has played in so many projects since then, you have probably heard him on some album on bass, not knowing it was him.

He was given his name by Sid Vicious, and it stuck. One of the longest lasting punk artists who has gone into the world music genre, he has such trademark bass lines you can tell any of his band's "Deep Space" or "Invaders Of The Heart" or even on Sinead O'Connor's best selling album.

Wobble has just released another solo album called "Jah Wobble Dub Volume 1", where he tells some stories without words, but so much feeling, a true crafts man.

We talked about his music over the last 38 years since I discovered his work with The Edge from U2 in late 1987. He has some great stories to tell I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.

Sticky Jazz Interview Rock Camp's David Fischof

Alice Cooper, Slash, Gene Simmons, Rob Halford, Sammy Hagar, Anne Wilson, Stephen Tyler, Roger Daltrey, .... Imagine being in a band with any of them, now that is actually a reality. David Fishof is the mastermind of making these dreams come true. "Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp" , or just "Rock Camp" is the opportunity for people to go and engage in a learning workshop with the industry's finest performers. This isn't American Idol, or Britan's Got Talent, this is people busting out the guitar and playing along with the guys in KISS, or Pink Floyd. According to David Fishof, Rock and Roll Dreams do come true. The documentary film "Rock Camp" just recently released covers all of this, and is a very eye opening experience into seeing how these "Legends" can sit down with a normal guy, write a song together, and do something magical. It was a great movie, Rock on everyone.  And Rest in Peace Howard "Dr Johnny Fever" Hessman. sizzlereel [https://vimeo.com/544735095] rockcamp [http://www.rockcamp.com/] masterclass [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5LkiG3aukQ] #rockcamp #sammyhagar #kisstheband #judaspriest #rogerdaltrey #joeperry #alicecooper #genesimmions #masterclass #paulstanley #slash #themonkeys #mickeydolenz #tonyrobbins #findyourpassion

Sticky Jazz Interview Tian Qyiy

I have been a sucker for weird "World Music" the clashing of cultural sounds, and finding ways to weave the spirited folk music of people into completely different culture's music. When it is done right, there is something absolutely wonderful that comes from it, where the music takes you where it want's to go.

I got to interview Charlie and John of Tian Qyiy, and that is exactly what I found with their music. Imagine "Dub" reggae bass, of their father Jah Wobble, with some Chinese/Mongolian traditional music, and a bit of Irish ethereal music, just for good measure.

The trip this will take you on is unmistakably powerful, and takes you on a lot of turns.

Had a surprise visit in the middle of the interview, and we laughed at how their music was NOT to be for the mainstream.

Here is their catalog, it will blow your mind

Sticky Jazz Interview Marc Shapiro/beatle wives

Veteran rock journalist, and biopic author Marc Shaprio has written 90+ books about musicans, actors, and even a couple sci fi comic books with Julie Newmar.I have read plenty about The Beatles, I know people who were there, and told me stories I had never heard from any other source. Well, this time Marc Shapiro lays out with incredible detail a chronological story of the lives of The Beatles, by telling the stories about their wives. I wanted to get to the bottom of several myths, and legends. This book does that in a historical textbook almost. We covered a lot of the book, and what happened in his research. Tune in any and all Beatles fans. #marcshapiro #thebeatles #rockbiographies #paulmccartney #johnlennon #cynthialennon #georgeharrison #ringostar #yokoono #oliviaarias #heathermills #nancyshevell #beatlemania #maureenstarkey #pattyboyd #gonzojournalism #gonzomusicjournalism #lindaeastman #ericclapton

Sticky Jazz Interview Ty Herndon (round 3?)

Ty Herndon is the first openly gay country music singer. I met him at Loveloud in 2019, and we have been friends ever since.

He just sunsetted his passion project "Love and Acceptance" which was a music festival in Nashville celebrating the LGBTQ community in a city that is not as friendly to the cause as others. He explains why in this interview, and I had to edit out the "Top Secret" plans he has moving forward.

Current project is an album of his greatest hits, as duets with so many other great artists.

Between interviews, random texts and phone calls, we have a great unprofessional friendship, and both of us had our ADHD going full speed, we went off topic so many times, it was just fun. (I edited out us talking recipes, etc)

Dagger Polyester (they / them) is a non binary performance artist from Los Angeles, that covers subject matter to make you think.

Having just finished an album "Perversion for Profit" we covered the subjects of shooting on film, the aesthetic of it, and how so much DIY can make the video something spectacular, then the subject is even much darker, it will make you think.

We covered the barbaric practice of "Conversion Therapy" and how it is rearing it's ugly head again in our society.

All of that in 25 minutes of conversation .

Sticky Jazz Interview Ariana And The Rose

How do you manage and co ordinate a breakup? Well, maybe while dancing on top of a vintage car, or setting up a moment to drop the news. Either way Ariana DeLorenzo has you covered with the plan. Contained in her new album called "The Breakup Variety Hour". A veteran performer from Brooklyn has performed an interactive cabaret at "The House of Yes", and after a hiatus, she is back to give us a great introspective album.

The concept album shifts genres with each song, giving a different angle of how to get through it, you might even find some bitterness, and bite, and some fun too.

Ariana and I talked about the situation behind writing this album, and how her previous work managed to put her in this position to make this one. She is inspired by so many artists and each has a bit of a shadow in her music.

And you've GOT to see this video.

Sticky Jazz Interview Bibi Lucielle

Imagine someone who sings crossover blues with Sci Fi themes, writes books, is prepping to start a fashion line, and acted in a science fiction psychological thriller on Amazon that even SHE has no idea what is happening on the show. All of that and more are given to us, by Bibi Lucille.

I got an email playing a really great song called "Addicted", and then covering religious trauma with "To Be Damned", she covers so much in her music that took a lot of time sifting through to get everything she had to offer.

We got to talk about her love for the LGBTQ community, British Sci Fi comedy, the number "42" and method acting that would have made David Lynch proud.

I think the only thing she is afraid of is boredom.

Sticky Jazz Interview New Model Army

A band that I fell in love with while trading tapes in 1987, sounded less "Punk" but had a great folk vibe and a fierce anxiety to them. New Model Army became one band I had to search for over the years, before the internet that was a task.

I got tapes, or CDs of theirs over the years, watching their tour schedules and never getting to see them live. Once I had the chance, but they changed cities and I had a commitment that next morning. The "Ever Touring Band" was always playing great shows (as the bootlegs indicate) but just out of reach.

I finally got to see them in 2024 in Strasbourg France, and they lived up to my expectations. Their live show was as if I had seen Live Aid, or Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett.

I got to speak to Justin Sullivan again after 15 years, and cover a lot of ground. Here we discuss the new album "Unbroken" and the continuing themes through his music.

Sticky Jazz Interview Shriekback Round 4

Having the opportunity to speak to one of your all time fave musicians does not come often. Shriekback has just released their 18th studio album "Monument" and I got to do a deep dive with Barry Andrews the principal songwriter in Shriekback.

We talked about collaborations with Fluke, and some chatter about Gang of Four and the recently passed David Allen (Who was in Shriekback and Gang of Four).

There is a lot behind this album, that Barry explains is saturated with ancient Greek references, not so gentle jabs at the current political heads of states being worthless, some tools, and even how to not enjoy ecstasy.

It is always something creative, and often times prophetic out of Shriekback, with the dry sarcasm, letting you know that you are expected to be in on the joke.

Sticky Jazz Interview The Bolshoi Brothers

There is a facebook group "The Bolshoi , the greatest band you never heard of". If you haven't heard of them yet, this will get you chest deep into their work.

They began as "The Bolshoi" in the 80s, releasing an EP "Bigger Giants", the "Friends" then "Lindy's Party". A lost album "Country Life" was released in 2015. Giving songs that were never hits, but easily ones to love on first hearing them, such as "Giants", "Happy Boy", "Please", "TV Man" and my all time fave of theirs "Lindy's Pary".

Trevor Tanner the singer/songwriter has released a large catalog of music over the years, and has regrouped with synth player Paul Clark to give us this new album "The Bolshoi Brothers". This new work comes from the guys who have been making music for the last 30+ years since the band ended, it is traditionally Trevor Tanner lyrics, but the moved on into an early Pink Floyd, and YES prog rock sound.

As a fan of prog rock, hearing this clash of sounds really made this album interesting, and easier to dive into the depths of themes these lyrics want to take you through.

A conversation of a lifetime to talk to such an influential band that steered me through my youth, and still appealing to my adult interests.

Sticky Jazz Interview Knox Chandler

Playing with, and for EVERY band you can imagine, guitarist Knox Chandler was also the makeshift cellist in The Psychedelic Furs, and guitarist for so many other musicians. He has worked with Siouxsie & The Banshees, REM, Natalie Merchant, and so many others, his resume shines like few other people could even dream of.

Knox has just released an album of experimental music, that borders into the sounds of the cosmic psychedelic called "The Sound", with an accompanying book of art, that strangely goes perfectly with the music.

Knox and I talk at length of The Psychedelic Furs family, and other projects, his recording process, and even fly fishing.

This is one of those albums you don't need words, the music speaks for itself.

Sticky Jazz Interview David J Haskins

If you don't know David J Haskins, or just "David J", then you have missed out on some of the most influential music in the punk, post punk, new wave, goth, psychedelic rock world.

Starting off playing bass, and occasional vocals in Bauhaus, then moving on to a solo career, then reforming with Bauhaus bandmates as "Love & Rockets", (that's where I come into the story) I binged on their music in full while working on a project about Buddhism in school. I became so enamored about their sound, and their lyrics, they catapulted into my number 3 spot, and have stayed there ever since in 1988.

David has delivered so much great music, and is most recently releasing with his current project "Night Crickets", (whom I have also interviewed). Fast forward to now, David has recorded a poetry, and spoken word album called "The Mother Tree", along with a book "Rhapsody, Trenody & Prayer", containing all of the poems on the album, and much more.

David and I discussed the album, how he began working on it in the late 90s, til now. How he found the band to record with, we also covered how all the reggae ended up in Bauhaus music, we talked about Nashville, racist cab drivers (two instances of them) , Jesus in a porno theater blessing the patrons, and even some secrets about Ian Curtis from Joy Division. There is a lot to unpack in this episode, the subjects are very heavy, and we get weighed down in them a lot.

I learned more about David J in this interview than I ever thought I would, or would ever be privy to at least. He spills his guts in poetry, it the beautiful mess of the human experience.

Sticky Jazz Interview Holly Cole

Holly Cole is one of the greatest female jazz vocalists, hailing from The Great White North (Canada), she has constantly delivered the music that wraps my soul up in the emotions of the moment.

Holly has done a whole album of Tom Waits covers (Temptation), or some dark vibes jazz getting through heartbreak and longing (Dark Dear Heart), and various collections between then and now. Now she has released a moon themed album "Dark Moon" where she clashes with classics, and every song on this album will make you think of feelings you had, inspired by the moon.

There is so much to enjoy and think about in her catalog, and we covered a lot of history on this episode.

Enjoy some Holly Cole at the links below.

I'm not sure I need to put much of an intro for this one but Toni Tennille [http://www.tonitennille.net/] is one the longest living careear pop stars. She was the only "Beach Girl" (they had her as a famale focalist) and she did so much great pop work in the 70s and 80s with her husbad "Captain" Daryl Dragon. Inspiring everyone from Olivia Newton John, to Sheena Easton, and too many other names to mention, she has solidified her name in pop music history. She recently came out of retirement to perform in the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center production of the classic musical "Hello Dolly!". Sticky Jazz Interview Chuck Panozzo / STYX

Charles (Chuck) Panozzo is one of founding members of the historical rock band "STYX" with his twin brother John. STYX has been maing music for 50 years, and created some of the most legendary ballads and anthems in rock since the 70s.  Chuck is a phenomenal bassist that managed to keep this band straddling the fine line with metal guitar, and synthesisers. With multi platinum albums "Pieces of Eight", "Paradise Theater" and "The Grand Illusion", the new album "Crash of the Crown [https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nZ_K4nA32nJHAdl8W3dAOe0nt7O5OHJ_0] " was recorded like so many other albums in covid, unconventionally. This album is just as good as previous work and sounds current.Chuck came out as gay and supporting AIDS awareness, he has survived AIDS, two bouts with cancer, and even the fallout from the STYX Album "Kilroy Was Here". At age 72 he has an incredible wisdom and wit about his life, and the music he has made that I have spent countless hours enjoying. This is a pretty epic conversation for me, and I managed enough will power to not ask him about his guitars.website [https://styxworld.com/] facebook [https://www.facebook.com/styxtheband] twitter [http://www.twitter.com/STYXtheband] itunes [https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/styx/id132659] #styxtheband #chuckpanozzo This program may contain copyrighted material which has not always been authorized by the copyright owners. There are "Legends" in rock & roll,  great guitarists leaving massive legacies, then you have Marco Pirroni, beginning his career by getting booted from Siouxsie & The Banshees TWICE, and then getting roped into playing guitar for Adam Ant, then going on to play with Sinead O'connor for most of her career,  you see a guy like Marco having done it all. His guitar work is monumental, as I have probably got everything he ever recorded onto vinyl, and then CD, then MP3, his guitar collection is just as legendary. We talked about his guitars, the stories you never heard on the back end, and so much more. He told me he honestly got into playing, and had no future plans, just wanting to play, and well, he did really good for himself.  Personal conversations about Adam Ant, Sinead O'Connor, and even Sid Vicious, there was just a lot to cover and he made it worth while. Facebook  [https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559650627964]#adamant #adamandtheants #davidbarbarossa #glenmatlock #thesexpistols #sidvicious #siouxsiesioux #sineadoconnor #malcolmmclaren #bobgruen #johnlydon #punk #garyoldman #jennvix #jahwobble #shakespearssister #johngrant

I am Jeremy Hinks, a "Gonzo" music journalist in Salt Lake City Utah, I am also the music editor at large for the LGBTQ publication instinct magazine, (nice of them to let a straight guy write for them isn't it?) I will give you the music you might have heard, might not have heard, but definitely should have heard. I'll give you interviews with some big names, some new people, and someone you heard long ago, and they still are kicking. No music is taboo on my show, I'll cover it all.  If you like what I do, Please consider sending a donation to help pay for the production, and advertisement of the show.  patreon | facebook | twitter | email   #musicjournalism #musicinterviews #gonzojournalism
