Something In The Wild
Conservation Debrief | Executive Orders, Utah Land Grab, CO Wolves

In this episode of the Something in the Wild podcast, Tyler Smith reviews January 2025’s major conservation stories. From Utah’s failed attempt to reclaim federal land to the controversial wolf reintroduction in Colorado, Tyler covers the most critical developments and their implications for hunters, anglers, and public land users.

00:00 - Introduction Overview of January's conservation topics.
02:00 - Utah Land Grab Supreme Court rejects Utah's lawsuit over BLM land.
05:30 - Executive Orders Trump’s orders targeting Alaska’s public lands.
09:30 - Colorado Wolves Costs and controversy of wolf reintroduction efforts.
14:00 - Corner Crossing Case Wyoming court decision grants access to public land.
24:00 - Hunting Deadlines Upcoming application deadlines for February.
26:00 - Seasonal Activities Tyler’s plans for winter fishing, camping, and more.

  • Utah Land Grab: The Supreme Court ruled against Utah’s lawsuit attempting to reclaim 18.5 million acres of federally managed BLM land, preserving access for public use. However, 13 other states supported Utah’s position, raising concerns about future challenges to public land ownership.
  • Executive Orders: Protections on 28 million acres of Alaska’s public land were revoked under Trump’s executive order, paving the way for energy development in areas like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and Tongass National Forest.
  • Colorado Wolves: Colorado’s wolf reintroduction program has cost taxpayers over $4.8 million so far, with additional funding budgeted for 2025. Ranchers and neighboring states like Wyoming and Idaho remain critical of the plan’s execution.
  • Corner Crossing Case: A Wyoming court affirmed the legality of corner crossing, unlocking access to 8.3 million acres of landlocked public land for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts.

These conservation stories highlight the ongoing debates over public land use, wildlife management, and balancing development with environmental stewardship. Tyler emphasizes the need for engagement and advocacy to ensure the future of public lands and outdoor recreation.

History of Pennsylvania's State Forest System

Pennsylvania’s state forests are a treasure trove of natural beauty and history, offering endless opportunities for outdoor recreation. But have you ever wondered how these forests came to be? In this episode of the Something in the Wild Podcast, I dive deep into the fascinating history of Pennsylvania’s state forests. From William Penn’s early conservation efforts to the devastating deforestation of the 19th century and the pivotal moments that shaped the forest system we cherish today, this episode uncovers it all. We explore how public lands were restored from what was once known as Pennsylvania’s Desert to what is now the breathtaking Pennsylvania Wilds. Along the way, you’ll learn about the visionary leaders like Joseph Rothrock and Gifford Pinchot, whose work paved the way for the sustainable forest management practices we benefit from today. Whether you’re a camper, hunter, angler, or simply a lover of the outdoors, understanding the story behind these public lands will deepen your appreciation for the incredible resources we have at our fingertips. 🔥 Key Highlights: Pennsylvania’s early conservation efforts by William Penn The impact of 19th-century logging and the rise of wildfires The establishment of the PA Forestry Commission and the forest reserve system The transformation of Pennsylvania’s Desert into Pennsylvania’s Wilds Why public lands are vital for clean water, wildlife, and recreation 🎥 Stay tuned for this Friday’s video where I camped with Connor, Sammi’s brother, in one of Pennsylvania’s state forests! ✨ Links & Resources: 🔗 Website: https://www.somethinginthewild.com/ 📱 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tylerpatricsmith/ 🎥 TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tylerpatricsmith 🆕 X (formerly Twitter): https://x.com/SITW_official ▶️ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@SomethingInTheWild

Pheasant Hunting is Fun and One of Trump's Appointments is Concerning

In this episode, I will be discussing my most recent trip to chase pheasants with my dogs and how it is the most fun anyone could have while hunting. I will then shift to my concerns about the new appointment for the Department of the Interior, Doug Burgum. Regardless of political affiliation us as sportsmen and women must keep our elected officials in check. Public Land Protection, JD Vance on Housing, and RMEF's Great Work

On this episode I break down my past weekend of deer and squirrel hunting. It always seems like once you switch gears, that's when the deer start showing up! I then work into some conservation news. First thing is the new bill to conserve 700,000 acres in Colorado's Gunnison Basin. This bill has heard over a decade of stakeholder engagement so it is long overdue. Next we switch gears to the vice presidential debate and JD Vance's comments on selling federal land to build housing. This is dangerous and it doesn't matter which party or political candidate you lean toward. And lastly, I talk about the amazing work the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is doing to provide more access for the general public. 6660 acres in WY, 160 acres in CO, 649 acres in PA, 15537 acres in OR, 2600 acres in UT, and a whopping 55,636 acres in KY! Great work by those folks and make sure you go support them! #somethinginthewild #keepitwild https://www.somethinginthewild.com/ https://www.instagram.com/tylerpatricsmith/ https://www.tiktok.com/@tylerpatricsmith
