Episode 127: Pacific Islanders in Publishing

| |  Pacific Islanders in Publishing | |

This week on Episode 127 of the #ReadswithRosaPodcast, I sit down to talanoa with the team from Pacific Islanders in Publishing, an organization that was created to amplify the many cultures and peoples across Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Prior to their launch late last year, Kanaka Maoli writer Keala Kendall, Mā’ohi writer & researcher Manuia Heinrich, and Hawaiian/Sāmoan writer Kealani Netane had already been doing a lot of work behind the scenes to promote Pacific Islanders’ books, spending more than a year compiling a database of our authors and their published works from the last 10 years. One important aspect of the database is that it allows publishing industry professionals to be able to find contacts when they are looking for certain representation.

Their website https://www.pacificislanderbooks.org also includes resources for creatives looking to break into publishing, book influencers, independent presses, and bookstores. Manuia shares that ‘the website is also about visibility, telling people that we are here and that we are writing our stories’.

Tune in to this week’s episode to hear more about the advocacy work that the #PacificIslandersinPublishing team are doing, as well as their current reads and book recommendations. Don’t forget to follow them on their socials and join their growing Discord community.

Episode 125: Josh Mase (Precise Digital)

| |  I'm never going to stop being a fan  | |

This week on Episode 125 of the #ReadswithRosaPodcast, I sit down and talanoa with Sāmoan musician, Josh Mase. You may know him as the lead guitarist of Three Houses Down, or perhaps you’ve seen him playing for other artists such as Mr Cowboy, Punialava’a, and Ozki. However, he is also part of a team doing vital work to support and educate our Pasifika artists and creatives. Mase is the Head of Pacific Music Distribution at #PreciseDigital, and he has been working alongside CEO Michael Giles to advocate for Pacific Musicians and ensure that they are getting royalties for their music, own their originals, and that other people aren’t scamming them or capitalizing off their hard work. Tune in as Mase talks about all things related to his role at Precise Digital, exposure to good music at an early age, his all-time favorite band, pursuing a different dream, telling our stories through music, Three Houses Down, the deep appreciation, love and respect he has for music and his fellow artists, and the importance of family.
