Layoffs in November went up to 4% month over month, which is quite a bit heading into the holiday season. At the same time people who are losing their jobs are finding it much more difficult to land a new job. It's taking people anywhere between 3 to 6 months to find a new job so even people who have been financially responsible and has an emergency fund might not be able to make it last long enough. The average net worth by age can be a fascinating number, but really I think it's more important to pay attention to the median net worth as that's far more representative of what most people will achieve realistically throughout their life. The problem is some people are so rich that it drives the averages of far beyond what most people will ever achieve. So really the median net worth is what we are most interested in.
