Avrohom is victorious i his war against the 4 Kings. He refuses the money because he has complete confidence in Hashem’s Bracha that he will be wealthy. However, when it comes to children Avrohom expresses tremendous pessimism. He refers to himself as a childless and destroyed man.Hashem tells him to go outside and count the starts. Rashi explains that he was meant to leave his astrological perception of reality. Hashem would change his name and his wife’s name and they would be blessed to father the Jewish nation.

A stingy miser descends to anger, jealousy, murder, lies to GD and refuses to take responsibility.But upon reflection, it’s clear that there’s so much more to the story. Why would an individual trying to express his gratitude to Hashem bring an inferior quality Sacrifice? Why would he be surprised that his sacrifice is rejected?The Baal Haturim insists that the story of Kayin and Hevel holds the secret to the story of Pharoh’s refusal to let the Jewish nation free.

On the first day of Rosh Hashana after the Torah reading we read the story of Chana, a barren woman who prays to Hashem for children. Chana’s prayers were answered and she bore a son named Shmuel. The Torah makes no effort to hide the raw emotions in the story.Initially as Chana Davened, Eli thought she was drunk. Chana herself was the one who clarified to him, that she was broken hearted not inebriated. Eli responds by saying: ‘Go to Peace and the GD of Israel will grant you the request that you have requested of Him.’The Talmud is deeply stirred by these words of Eli. They serve as a paradigm as to how any Jew should react after having suspected or accused a fellow of something for which they are truly innocent.This Shiur explores why Eli initially thought Chana was drunk, why he never seemed to properly apologize to her and how he knew for certain, that GD would grant Chana’s wishes.

The Talmud provides fascinating insights into this story. Chana’s prayers to beat children represents an actual battle. Her husband Elkanah, seems non empathetic and even oblivious to her pain. Her sister wife Penina, mocks her and pours salt on to her wounded heart. Eli, the Kohen Gadol accuses her of being a drunkard and believes the child deserves the death penalty. Even Amighty GD ‘Closed her Womb.’
Chana prevails over everything and everyone.

The Rambam writes that no war may ever be waged by the Jews without first offering the other side a peaceful solution. This according to the Rambam applies even to Amalek.But why? Why offer our arch enemies a way to make peace with us? The Midrash insists that this was Moshes’s initiative. After he seemingly deviated from Hashem’s instructions and offered Sichon a peaceful option, Hashem swore that from now on every war fought by every Jew must be waged this way.

This Shiur explores the deeper meaning of the original Sin of Adam and Chava eating from the tree of knowledge. The deeper meaning of the conversation between Avraham and Sarah regarding the banishing of Yitzchok. The deeper meaning of the encouragement of the Midrash to ‘listen to Hashem.
Rebbi Yaakov said: ‘This world is a Hallway before the world to come. Prepare yourself in the Hallway so that you can enter the mansion.’
The Mishnah seems to leave us with more questions than information:
1. What exactly are we supposed to do in order to prepare ourselves in this world?
2. Is there no redemption for one who has not prepared himself in this Hallway to enter GD’s mansion?
3. What is the connection between the content of the Mishnah, and R’ Yaakov himself?
R’ Yaakov was the grandson of Elisha Ben Avuya, also known as Acher. Elisha / Acher was a sage of the Mishnah who was so pained by the lack of apparent justice in this world, that he walked away from his belief in Amighty GD and His Torah.
His life and his challenges generate much midrashic and Talmudic discussion. Even after his passing his destiny remained an enigma and a challenge. In the end, he makes it into Gan Eden.

The time had come for Moshe to rebuke the Jews. But, being an experienced leader, he anticipated some serious resistance and push back. Jews don’t like being told off.
Moshe took precaution in 2 significant ways:
This Shiur explores some of the Midrashim regarding Og. Particularly, the Midrash that says he was the same person identified by the Torah as Eliezer servant of Avrohom. Moshe feared him. Hashem reassured Moshe that there was nothing to fear and Moshe killed him.
In the end, it was the slaying of Og, that gave Moshe Rabbeinu the platform to teach the Jews about their own miraculous identity.

The story starts off so simply. The tribes of Reuven and Gad have a tremendous amount of cattle. They observe that the land of Sichon and Og, that Hashem has already granted the Jews, is lush with pasture and perfect for their animals. With humility, they approach Moshe Rabbeinu and the Jewish leaders and ask if they can accept their portion of Israel in the Transjordan, in exchange for their predestined portion in Israel.The consequences for their request seem difficult to understand:1. Moshe Rabbeinu accuses them of sending their brothers off to war while they remain in safety.2. Moshe compares them to the Meraglim. Expresses concern that they will elicit the same response from Hashem as the Meraglim did. 3. Rashi says they valued their livestock more than their sons and daughters.4. The Midrash compared them to Achitophel, Shimshon and Korach. All of whom did ‘not receive their gifts from Hashem, but grabbed them for themselves.’ And as a result were lost from the world.5. The Spies did not want to bring back fruit from Israel to show the Jews. They were forced by Kalev. Kalev threatened them, he said if you don’t bring back fruit there’s gonna be war between. Either you’ll kill me or I’ll kill you.
