If you want to go out and become an expert in salsa dancing, you will most likely be confronted with a fait amount of painful heteronormativity. Danyèla decided to not march in time to this tired beat. Instead she stubbornly kept correcting her dance teachers, and thus changed the language around salsa. From men and women to leaders and followers. For the first time since the beginning of the show someone from France has found her way on the podcast. Something I’ve been trying to get done for four years. What’s more this episode: the importance of t.v. and a sudden realization. Nazi-Punks Fuck Off!
Suky is a booker and promotor for Queer As Punk, a queer music night in Edinburgh. Their political compass in booking gigs leads the way through a messy musical landscape. When bands and artists do the same, their paths might cross with a fun, safe concert for all parties involved. You can fuck off if you’re a racist, bigot, transphobe or just being a dick at shows. Drastic Shifts
The war in Ukraine has been going on for more than half a year, so people tend to forget about this issue and focus on their regular daily lives. Not Amy. They’ve been sharing resources, helping refugees and showed support to a point where it became a full time job. How did they take the shift from more general queer activism to a specific Ukranian Refugee flow? They’ll explain in this episode. Of course we happen to talk about Eurovison too. It kinda becomes a yearly tradition to bring up the Song Contest in September. American, Asian and African listeners, share your thoughts on the matter! Content warning: queerphobia, war, racism. Sisters in Solidarity
This podcast episode deals with some dark subjects, albeit not all too explicit. Since the Taliban took over Kabul, roughly a year ago, the lives of plenty of women and girls drastically changed. The Young Afghan Women Movement offers support and solidarity for these women. Hameeda is part of this movement. In this podcast she explains what motivates her and how she deals with the big questions that come with dealing with political conflict. More this episode: Hameeda’s unique view on gender. Sometimes gender is a physical journey, sometimes it’s a spiritual one. She shows how the weird intersection between gender, music and religion can be in beautiful harmony. The Timing of Change
It’s no secret that your location can hugely impact your mood, mental state and creative inspiration. However, the timing of when you change your environment is often overlooked in this. Singer and songwriter Eric Terino will tell you all about it. He moved from a quiet New England area to New York City and then back to the New England woods. This all had it’s effect on his music. What’s more this episode: How to recreate the typical Van Gogh paint style, dealing with loss, and how different vocal takes can make a huge impact on your art. Things Take Time
Something I’d Like to call the Harrison Ford effect is when people start a new career later in life. JD Danner used to work as an accountant but left Corporate America in order to pursue music. Now she has a professional career as an artist and she’s making quite a name for herself. Just like Ford, Danner proves that sometimes things take time. Danner started her career in the 90’s, when Alanis Morissette, Tracy Chapman and other women making rock music were topping the charts. Her ambition to play in the same circles as these other women didn’t quite come true, but considering the transphobic brand of feminism that was common at the time that might just be a good thing. In the episode Danner reflects on how she lived through this era. Become a Patron through https://Patreon.com/QueerSounds ! One Step At the Time
Whether we’re talking about a country’s march towards gender equality or one’s own personal progress, it always takes some effort. Latoya, or Toya K, is a singer-songrwiter from Namibia and she explains what she had to go through on a personal level, as well as what her experience has been as a queer artist in her home country. These things have in common that progress doesn’t always happen as fast as you’d want but rather one step at the time. It’s been a treat to have Toya on the show. From the day we first met we knew this just had to happen and what better time to promote a friends art than during the QS Summer of Sound. Latoya hopes people learn something at her life shows and hopefully that also goes for listening to this podcast episode. One Person V. International Politics
As recommended by the QueerSounds collegian Maja, The QS summer of sound welcomes Eunice. She’s the bassist and singer for Vienna based band Curb, a pop punk Trio that she tries to get more and more queer, one song at the time. Together we discuss small easily digestible themes such as international politics. With the current state of the world being what it is, more often than not we get our day ruined by whatever the twitter roit of the moment might be. Even as Europeans, we often get dragged into whatever is going on in American Politics. This podcast is also guilty as charged of some US-centrism, more than I’d like to admit. Which leaves the question: why should we care? (You can read this question in whichever way you like.) From Hancock to House
he QS Summer of Sound continues. We Kick off July with Jess Jessica: a ridiculously productive house producer from Colorado. She releases new music more often that most and for this episode she brought on a track no one has ever heard before. So stay tuned for this QS-exclusive at the end of the pod! Her endless curiosity and determination are what sets Jessica apart from other artists. As soon as she got behind a computer, she would try and figure out how producing en music software works. Bisexual Shock Value
Content warning: Racism, queerphobia, misogyny, and a brief mention of self-harm. In this second installment of the QS Summer of Sounds we’re giving you some insight in what it’s like to play festivals that attract more people than the population of your home country. As well as a short introduction to the Faroe Islands, its music scene and general public opinion on queer people. Be warned: it’s not great. In order to shake things up a little bit, Joe and the Shitboys actively brand themselves as Bisexual. Under a false guise of neutrality people tend to think that conforming to the status quo is the best way to keep the peace. Publishing the Publicist
It’s the Summer of Sound part one! Have you ever wondered what’s the difference between a publisher and a publicist? So have I! And so has today’s guest Liv Dellanno. There was a little bit of confusion about what the difference between the two different music industry positions. Thankfully she is perfectly able to explain the main focus of this episode: what a publicist does. I’m not gonna lie, I really enjoyed trying to be extra sharp with my questions during this talk. There’s just something about working with other industry professionals that makes me want to try my best. If that means i’m rude or even mean sometimes, I hereby apologise. Sensory Overload and How to Cope
Content Warning: Contains mentions of self harm, discussions of mental health and trauma. Hopefully you’re ready to listen to me deal with my own internal issues. My therapist suggested I’d talk more about my own diagnosis so here we are. My personal sensory overload withs differently from Kris’ but I’m still very grateful he came on the show to talk so openly about his autism. To be honest, I hoped this conversation would magically melt away all thought and doubts i had about my own diagnosis. Obviously it doesn’t work that way. Ex-treme Emotions
Diệu Anh, or Zoë to those who don’t want to butcher Vietnamese, talks about her exes so the conversation gets a bit uncomfortable at times. Whether it’s an ex partner, crush or friend, emotions rise high. Thankfully Zoë is very open about everything. She never shies away from getting out of her comfort zone in order to discover some deep rooted feelings, no matter if they’re positive or negative. Never before in the three years this podcast has existed, have I had someone on who talked to openly about the deep dark corners of their heart. All thoughts and feelings aside, at the end of the day Zoë is just another queer trying to make the world a better place. Through her work at ICS she fights for queer rights in Vietnam. Socialize But Make It Sneaky
Ramadan Kareem! This time of year is an important time for Muslims. Ramadan is a period of spending time with loved ones. It’s for sharing the iftar with people who are important to you, and supporting each other in fasting. But what to do if you can’t be yourself around family? Or, in Mehdi’s case, your sexuality is not legal? It’s still possible to socialize as a queer person in Morocco, but you have to be careful. Quite a chunk of the episode got cut because it would have required a bunch of content warnings in for a short section of the show. How Music Heals
This episode feels like a throwback of the earlier days of this podcast. Limited audio quality, a bigger focus on the local activists scene and most of all: just me chatting with a friend. Isabel used to live in the same city as me, before moving back to Madrid. Together we’ve always talked about mental health, pop-culture and how music heals. What’s more this episode: nerding out about Spain in the 70s. Spain’s recent history has been quite different from the rest of Europe. The Case For Comedy
Over the years stand-up comedy has gotten a bad reputation. More often than not people are exposed to comedians trying to be funny by making fun of queer folks. Enter AJ. He helps stand-up comedians who are just starting out by providing feedback. This includes thinking critically on jokes that could be offensive. This way he hopes to create a space in which comedy can be fun for everyone. I'm really showing my age this episode. There actually was an entire section of the episode in which we talk about being on camera, something your trusty podcast host is not at all used to, never mind comfortable with. Besides, the questions about TikTok have real old person vibes. For example: asking what someone's favourite TikTok is? That's like asking someone for their favourite Tweet. Dang, we don't know. Sailor Moon and Power Rangers
Watching TV at a young age Kitan already knew: sometimes they’re Sailor Moon, sometimes they’re a Power Ranger, sometimes both, sometimes neither. Their parents didn’t really keep a close eye on their gender performance. As long as they did well in school, there wasn’t much to worry about. Play with whatever toys you want, aspire to be Sailor Moon or whoever else, listen to whatever music you like, but bring home those A’s. Despite all this, Kitan’s childhood wasn’t all good and well. In this episode we cover the good and the bad. They did not have the language to express their gender, they had to deal with high academic pressure, but thankfully there was always music to come back to. MEP for LGBT
This episode is the last instalment of the European tour we’ve been on for the past few months and what better way to end it with an MEP: Kim van Sparrentak. The European Parliament is a wonderfully complex bureaucratic mess. Although it’s fun for someone who likes political puzzles, it’s horrible to break them away from their capitalist and queerphobic ways. It’ll be no surprise that this one is a very political episode.
