In this episode of Quasar With Fries, Rich and Wayne unpack all of the latest news from lens and camera maker Sigma. Up first is the new Sigma BF, a camera with an extremely minimalist design, made from a single block of aluminum. But Sigma is trying to revolutionize camera design in more ways than just industrial design with the new BF. The boys break down how Sigma has implemented a new take on camera menu systems with this new camera, its lack of removable and expandable storage, and whether or not this camera is worth its $2,000 price tag. The boys also talk about the new Sigma 300-600 f/4, an extraordinarily capable new lens which is sure to land on the wish lists of many sports and wildlife photographers. In this episode of Quasar With Fries, Rich and Wayne discuss the crumbling of the very foundations of our society. Not really. No, what they really discuss is how oddly personal certain tech enthusiast communities take the announcement of new products and the opinions surrounding those products held by others. And we’re not just talking about the Apple vs. Android or Nikon vs. Canon wars. There’s a lot of discord and schism within individual communities as well. Take for instance, the introduction of Sony’s latest flagship camera, the A1 II. Rather than being a day that excited fans of Sony’s Alpha camera platform, it largely tore the community into two bickering factions. Why does that happen? What should we do in response? Get into it.

In this episode of Quasar with Fries, Rich and Wayne dive into the existential crisis that is our digital reality. Is AI a net positive or a net negative? What does it mean when you fill social media networks with AI? How does that impact the currently toxic incentives social media platforms entice content creators with? The guys discuss the latest AI news including the mysterious DeepSeek large language model (LLM) and how it is threatening to pop the AI bubble. Plus, they discuss Meta’s plans to deploy AI profiles to its platforms. The boys also discuss the current status of the “TikTok” ban in the U.S. and how the service and platforms like it have changed what it means to be a “creative.” In many cases these incentives blur the lines between art and audience. How are we coping with that? And would we be better off if the internet just went away? This is a big one. Get into it.

In this episode of Quasar With Fries, two cameras enter, one camera leaves. Not really, but that got your attention, right? Anyway, what really happens is Wayne and Rich have an in-depth discussion that really centers around the axiom “the best camera is the one you have with you.” These days, we are absolutely spoiled when it comes to tools for taking photos and videos. The thing is “taking a photo” means one thing to one person and it could mean something entirely different to another. When one person takes a photo they might prioritize convenience or ease of use. Meanwhile, another person might prioritize control over the look of the photo or having buttons and dials to hone that control in to the fullest.
So, Rich and Wayne specifically discuss the new iPhone 16 Pro and Wayne’s experience with both that phone and the Ricoh GR III, a delightful, pocket camera that makes taking incredible photos very easy. Because, to be honest, even with the new iPhone’s Camera Control button and new software features like Photographic Styles, if you’re serious about taking photos, the iPhone can be a real letdown in many situations. That’s not to say it’s not a great and very capable camera! But in many situations it’s very…fiddly. So, what’s the “right” camera to have? That’s what this episode is all about! Get into it.

This episode of Quasar With Fries is jam-packed! Rich and Wayne stumbled upon a third host so that’s cool. Jon something. This newly-formed but temporary trio discusses how Meta’s Orion AR glasses stack-up to the incumbent—and, you know, actually available for purchase—Apple Vision Pro. To immerse or not to immerse! The guys also discuss the scary privacy implications demonstrated by a couple of college students figuring out how to dox just about anyone using Meta Ray-Bans. Also on the docket is a breakup of Google’s monopoly of the online search engine and ad business. But the real stars of this week’s show are discussions around popular media consumption. First up, the boys discuss the state of movie theaters, whether or not their demise is nigh, and what theater chains and movie studios should be doing to keep theaters around. The episode wraps up with a discussion of whether modern recording artists actually need record labels to be successful. Also, they might be the future of computing. Or not! The boys also discuss an awesome new Kickstarter idea from the folks at Moment for an iPhone a USB-C hub iPhone cage that allows you to quickly create a killer mobile video rig. Speaking of iPhone 16, Wayne gives his initial impressions on his shiny new iPhone 16 Pro, including thoughts on the new Camera Control button and the usefulness of Photographic Styles.
