I met Angela on LinkedIn on a comment thread where the OP posted about having the "camera on" feature as a requirement for work actually does a disservice for people on the spectrum. I appreciated Angela's comments that camera off help with workplace accommodations and had to invite her to be on the pod.
Angela shares her experience of being a black woman on the spectrum and how it has affected her work and home life pre and post diagnosis. Intersectionality and Autism are significant social markers when it comes to self advocacy in professional spaces. Discrimination is experienced at higher rates among people of color who are also on the spectrum . What do we do when we don't meet other people's social expectations when on the spectrum? “That’s how I found out that I was on the spectrum!…”
Series Kick Off Thursday June 15th, 2023
I was recently diagnosed with Autism in July 2022 while I was employed at PRX Media. I’m no longer at that company I was let go in July 2022. Instead of support I was placed on a PIP (Professional Improvement Plan) soon after I reported to HR about the bullying and harassment by my manager when I revealed to her that I suspected that I might be on the spectrum as I was having difficulty with my job. I never signed an NDA with PRX Media so I'm free to talk about this. I have also received word that my former manager has been fired 10 months after I was let go.
Inspired by what happened to me at PRX, I wanted to produce podcast episodes on Adults who got later in life ASD diagnosis in Women, LGBT+, and People of Color. Autism in women is easily missed as the traits and markers are based on white males on the spectrum. How autism is expressed in women differs, but there are some overlap.
LGBT and POC who are on the spectrum are at risk of discrimination in the workplace. My hope is that this Adult Autism Series will help to provide support to the adult woman, LGBT+ and Person Of Color who is on the Spectrum who maybe struggling and feeling hopeless while at work or in their day to day life. Just because were on the spectrum doesn’t make us incapable! We have a lot to offer and contribute, so why aren’t we given the chance? That’s my big question I hope to find some answers, validation, and sustainable solutions as I navigate this aspect of myself and continue to heal.
The Adult Autism Series will cover how to navigate work/career, Autistics who have their own businesses, Autistics who are living independently how they did it, what was/or not helpful when it comes to independent living, social dynamics, family, dating/marriage, being single/solo, LGBT+, meltdowns/burnout, people of Color on the spectrum. This is for the Adult Autistic who is struggling and is looking for support and apply real solutions in living an abundant life while on a budget.

- There maybe comments about Spectrum Levels (Level 1, 2, 3). I only mention my level as that is what I was told by my ASD evaluator. Spectrum is Spectrum I won't be focusing on levels. I'll be focusing on Lived Experience and resources that work for me and what works for my guest(s).

During the Covid-19 pandemic, two friends in comedy, Nina G. & OJ Patterson, joined forces to celebrate both their love of stand-up comedy to write Bay Area Stand-Up Comedy: A Humorous History (published by The History Press). The book includes over 100 photos, incorporating interviews from comedians like Don Novello (aka Father Guido Sarducci), Larry “Bubbles” Brown, Donald Lacy, Carrie Snow, Debi Durst, Tony Sparks, Ritch Shydner, and Lisa Geduldig (Kung Pao Kosher Comedy) that help tell the story of Bay Area stand-up comedy from the mid 1800s to the pandemic.
