EP 11: The one where we (try) to change the world of nuptials

In this episode of LAW'D have Mercy, we speak to Rebecca Kooiker from Pop Up Weddings South Africa, about inclusivity and choice in the wedding industry. We chat love, law, non traditional couples and marriage. We are firm believers in making "law for everyone", especially when it comes to how couples choose to make their love "official". Rebecca, Jules and their team share this belief too and apply this to how they help couples to tie the knot.

EP 6: The one where you're dealing with a retrenchment...
Covid-19 has changed the way we all work - probably forever. Companies are realising that this economic downturn means a very uncertain future, and many have decided to restructure their businesses to mitigate the risk of closing completely by reducing the working hours of some employees and retrenching others. In this episode, we chat to specialist labour lawyer, Hayley Mackay about the do's and do not's of retrenchment.

EP 5: The one for influencers who work without contracts...
Based on a few chats we’ve had with people in our community, it appears there’s a bit of a vibe around freelance contracts. Especially when it comes to influencers and the contracts they do and don’t sign with the brands that they work with. (We know there’s also a bit of a vibe around the term “influencer” - call it what you will: digital creator, mom-fluencer, curator, online ambassador.) In this episode we chat to business owner and influencer, Roxy Hutton, about her experience of doing the influencer thing both with and without contracts.

EP 4: The one where creatives don’t get paid properly...
We challenge you to find one creative who hasn't had the "exposure carrot" dangled in front of them as a way to get their services for lower rates, or worse, for free! In this episode of LAW'D have mercy, we chat to South African music producer, Mpho Pholo. He shares a few of his own battle scars and some great lessons he's learnt when it comes to negotiating appropriate payment and terms as a creative.

EP 3: The one where someone copycats your business website

This story was shared with us by Tarryn James, the founder of Yoga South Africa. Yoga South Africa is our country’s leading yoga resource. It’s been around for yonks. Every yoga teacher who has ever bent themselves into a pretzel knows about it. It’s a household name. Imagine Tarryn’s shock when she woke up one morning to a message from a friend saying: “Ummmmm… not sure if you’ve seen… but the whole Yoga South Africa directory has been copied outright on another website”. Without any legal help, Tarryn intuitively followed textbook protocol and had the whole situation dealt with within a day! In this episode, we'll chat with her about the things she did to sort out the breach.

EP 1: The one about the legal admin of dying
We thought we'd start strong with a topic that no one really wants to hear about: death. And, more specifically, making sure your ducks are in a row for one day when - not if - you kick the bucket. We love a death euphemism as much as the next guy but rest assured this episode does a fair bit of straight talking about the legal admin of dying. It's not for the faint of heart, but it's important life stuff.
