"Words make gateways to infinite and wonderful worlds." The podcast is the result of a 7th-grade poetry project made by students from Gimnasio Fontana in Bogotá, Colombia. The students have been studying and applying figurative language, symbolism, uniform features, and poetry structures throughout the bimester. For the project, students analyzed the symbolic meanings for the uniform of their choice: "service", "authoritarian", or "sport". Then, they had to write a poem about this uniform. We have recorded the final results and published them here. We hope you enjoy the podcast!

Poetic Uniforms
A Soccer´s T-Shirt

Real Madrid is the best team ever I will say for sure,

although several soccer teams have existed all over the world,

not a single soccer sentiment

feels like the one you get when you push your team so they feel treasured.

Either you can call it just clothing or whatever you want,

but a team’s uniform goes way beyond that,

it is your t-shirt connecting to your deep heart,

and dancing with your emotions at the time you’re signing the anthem-like art.

A t-shirt can be Either white as a plain paper sheet,

Or blue as a shining sky,

Each team is represented by a different color tone,

I am so related, that my blood color will be the same until I am gone.

Like some people say about their beloved team

they will die or do anything for it,

I rather seat tranquil

Just to enjoy a good match while just focusing on it.

Memorizing what someone ever said

“In variety is pleasure”, and I could not agree more,

We can have a bunch of soccer team, colors, and feelings,

and appreciate and learn from them all,

not judging anyone and respecting each other more.

Poetic Uniforms
US Military Uniform

Unique suit used by a hero

Symbol of courage as the great eagle and fear zero

More stars than in the sky

Infinite courage, he must-have during the fight, no matter why

Lose or win, a whole country will give you support

Immense love they will show when you arrive at the port

To everyone who dresses with pride his uniform

A great nation will honor you, even in the major storm

Red, white and blue, the colors of the flag over the shoulder

You have to defend the name of millions because you are a soldier

Under the sea, in the land, or above the clouds

Nothing will stop a warrior, not even millions of crowds

Imagine a peaceful world built over the tears of believers

Fights will be no more and of course no deceivers

One uniform means effort, proud and passion

Remember to respect your nation

Mothers and fathers have raised their children, many to use the US military uniform, to be honored and remembered as great heroes.

Not all is what it seems

Some times it is not just about what’s outside

Some times we just say things without thinking twice

Some times we think we are judges

Some times we have so many stereotypes

The fabric is extremely soft

The shape especially made

They can do all their turns and moves

They can make the players feel ready to begin

That blue and yellow shining

The colors look just like the sky, in a sunny day without clouds

The boys in the back smiling

They all are a fun group of kids

But their smile is just like a mask

That covers the pain they have deep in their hearts

And no one gets to ask

What’s happening when the game starts

The game seems to last just one second

But the tension while playing and seeing the game seem to last forever

They all want to win and have the best weekend

Maybe the best ever for them and the school they are leading

Untitled Poem 3

The team that gave it their all, in their red uniform, knowing what he was doing, almost at the end of the league

Led by his coach who in his young years also hit the ball

Sweating that shirt for which they fought so much, that would give them the guaranteed victory

Many people shouting with those colors, it would give them the satisfaction of their coach who had placed orders

Firefighters

He was my hero

He taught me things to keep me safe

From danger, never making me feel unsafe

He showed me to do my best

And I can´t stop being blessed

The first day when I used that fluffy uniform

my soul grew happy

Not many remind us, not many care

Every time our duty calls,

we could even go to rescue bears

I put my life at risk

But at the end of the day

I remember that we pledged

For freedom and justice for all

We are known as the ones who rescue cats

Who wear big red hats

My Maltese cross is a reminder that I lay down my life for your safety

In honor of those who sacrificed themselves for us

The sound of the siren alerts all my anatomy,

Wee-woo, woe-woo

The sensation of my nerves rising every bone in my spine

Through the smoke the bright stripe

They guide me towards the light.

The deadly fire behind me,

Waiting for us to play

I do not have the need of fear

The heat trying to invade my shield

to get inside my skin

really trying to break-in

It makes me feel warm

As hugs from a mother on a cold night.

So when I extend my gentle hand

Take it, and I will take you to your homeland.

Soccer

It’s Sunday afternoon.

The sun is on the horizon.

People on the streets with flags and t-shirts.

The stadium is empty but, soon, thousands of voices will sing as one voice.

The court is so green and so beautiful like a farm in spring.

the court excitedly waiting to hear that goool!

Defeat doesn't go through our minds,

we live for football and victory.

Our players are never alone.

We, the fans will always accompany them.

Years go by, but this feeling will remain.

This feeling is priceless and our team knows it.

We always want to win and become champions too.

Soccer is what makes us live

Soccer is what makes us give

Soccer is the start of it all

Soccer is way better than the mall

all dying of excitement to win

even those who we did not think would arrive.

Ode to Cops

We watched as you killed Dilan Cruz

We watched as you killed Javier Ordóñez

We watched as you killed 16 civilians in Bogotá.

Sure, you claim there are just a few bad apples,

But A SINGLE ONE could spoil the whole bunch.

We watched as you pushed the people to agree with you.

We watch your black uniforms of death.

As soon as we see you we are afraid.

We watch you and your forces of darkness repress.

We heard the banging bullets all around Colombia.

We know that you are not here to protect and serve,

But to add a little touch of repression.

Isn’t it ironic how you claim to protect and serve,

even though the only thing you protect is wealth and the state?

You are as greedy as snakes.

You turn the lifely color green into a deadly mix of oppression and censorship.

You turn a fight for justice into blood and tears.

You are pawns of the state, you are not who you think you are.

Why the protective gear, if you are the ones who shoot first?

You turn debates into wars.

You turn protests into bloodbaths.

You flip your jacket.

You cover your badge.

You become the slave of your uniform and your beloved institution.

Doesn’t matter if you witness a crime

if you don’t witness the rot inside of your institution.

Thanks to you,

Fighting for justice in Colombia is a death sentence.

Wanting real peace is a death sentence.

We watch, we heard, we now know

The lies you’ve told everyone.

We know about the countless innocents you killed.

There is a big question.

It isn't “What can we do about it?”

It is “What CAN’T we do about it”

“From a slave patrol, to a police force”

My helmet blinds my thoughts and makes me obey the orders that put my integrity at risk,

Green and rough is my Helmet and it’s as heavy as the conscience I deal with, between

My chest my military plate is so people identify me, I’ve seen unseen, seen

What will traumatize me for thousands and thousands of years, non-stop machines

Roll In the fields, my shirt has the flag of my country and with honor I wear it,

The shirt represents my loyalty to the country, and the protection that it transmits.

my gun as cold as the weather, loaded and heavy, all I can think is about the gun

with the hunger of killing, it protects mi foot and are large and are made of leather, stunned and amazed I am for the things I’ve seen, my future generations will be safe and love their country y grew with, and not live in a country in war, corruption, and blood.

The Devil Faced Warriors

A strong slashing sword hits in the fight, as the wind passes by. Attacking red as blood, black as death, while the enemy takes his last breath. Enemy’s attacks, strong as steel, while the leather armor doesn’t even feel. Warriors of honor and victory, their training life has a lot of history. People of passive words, but aggressive in war, but their feelings are grey as fog.

Person of light-dark leather, and weakening strong metal, they would murder, only for honor. Humans of martial arts, stealthy as a cat, would do anything, for the country of the rising red round sun. Protected by their “Kabuto” and “Do”, and because of this, in battle, they win without a wound. And if they lose, they have no choice, instead of committing “seppuku”.

Armors of vast small leather scale garment. With spiky shape, and flawless fabric, the “tetsu” is too strong, that’s why the fighter is harmless. The armor has too much history, part still a mystery, and that makes it more interesting. A very threatening appearance, but curious too, he could slash you, in the blink of my eye.
