Who Has Seen the Wind? (Pickled Poem Ep. 81)

"Who Has Seen the Wind?" by Christina Rossetti

Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you:
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through.

Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I:
But when the trees bow down their heads,
The wind is passing by.

My Valentine (Pickled Poem Ep. 80)

"My Valentine" (excerpt) by Robert Louis Stevenson

I will make you brooches and toys for your delight
Of bird-song at morning and star-shine at night.
I will make a palace fit for you and me
Of green days in forests and blue days at sea.

February Twilight (Pickled Poem Ep. 79)

"February Twilight" by Sara Teasdale

I stood beside a hill
Smooth with new-laid snow,
A single star looked out
From the cold evening glow.

There was no other creature
That saw what I could see—
I stood and watched the evening star
As long as it watched me.

Velvet Shoes (Pickled Poem Ep. 78)

"Velvet Shoes" by Elinor Wylie

Let us walk in the white snow
    In a soundless space;
With footsteps quiet and slow,
    At a tranquil pace,
    Under veils of white lace.

I shall go shod in silk,
    And you in wool,
White as white cow’s milk,
    More beautiful
Than the breast of a gull.

We shall walk through the still town
    In a windless peace;
We shall step upon white down,
    Upon silver fleece,
    Upon softer than these.

We shall walk in velvet shoes:
    Wherever we go
Silence will fall like dews
    On white silence below.
We shall walk in the snow.

The First Snowfall (Pickled Poem Ep. 77)

"The First Snowfall" (excerpt) by James Russell Lowell

The snow had begun in the gloaming,
   And busily all the night
Had been heaping field and highway
With a silence deep and white.

Every pine and fir and hemlock
Wore ermine too dear for an earl,
And the poorest twig on the elm-tree
Was ridged inch deep with pearl.

January is
A clean white sheet, newly-ironed
An empty page:
A field of freshly-fallen snow
Waiting to be mapped
By our footsteps.

White Fields (Pickled Poem Ep. 75)

"White Fields" by James Stephens

I
In the winter time we go
Walking in the fields of snow,

Where there is no grass at all,
Where the top of every wall,

Every fence, and every tree,
Is as white as white can be.

II
Pointing out the way we came,
—Every one of them the same—

All across the fields there be
Prints in silver filigree;

And our mothers always know
By the footprints in the snow,
Where it is the children go.

Disturb Us Lord (Pickled Poem Ep. 74)

"Disturb Us, Lord" by Sir Francis Drake

Disturb us, O Lord, when we are too well-pleased with ourselves;
When our dreams have come true
because we have dreamed too little;
When we have arrived in safety because
we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, O Lord, when with the abundance of things possessed, we lose our thirst for the Water of Life;
When, having fallen in love with time, we have ceased to dream of Eternity;
And our efforts to build a new earth have allowed Your vision for a new heaven to grow dim.

Stir us, O Lord, to dare more boldly, to venture on wider seas where storms shall show Thy Mastery.
Where, losing sight of the land, we shall find the stars, in the name of Him who pushed back the horizons of our hope and invited the brave to follow Him.

Pebbles (Pickled Poem Ep. 73)

"Pebbles" by Valerie Worth

Pebbles belong to no one
Until you pick them up —
Then they are yours.

But which, of all the world’s
Mountains of little broken stones,
Will you choose to keep?

The smooth black, the white,
The rough gray with sparks
Shining in its cracks?

Somewhere the best pebble must
Lie hidden, meant for you
If you can find it.

Christmas Bells (Pickled Poem Ep. 72)

"Christmas Bells" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
    And wild and sweet
    The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
    Had rolled along
    The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
    A voice, a chime,
    A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
    And with the sound
    The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
    And made forlorn
    The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
    "For hate is strong,
    And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
    The Wrong shall fail,
    The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."

Some People (Pickled Poem Ep. 71)

"Some People" by Rachel Field

Isn't it strange some people make
    You feel so tired inside,
Your thoughts begin to shrivel up
Like leaves all brown and dried!

But when you're with some other ones,
    It's stranger still to find
Your thoughts as thick as fireflies
    All shiny in your mind!

Psalm 100 (Pickled Poem Ep. 69)

"Psalm 100"

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.

Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Thanksgiving Day (Pickled Poem Ep. 68)

"Thanksgiving Day" (Over the river and through the wood) by Lydia Maria Child

Over the river and through the wood,
    To grandfather's house we go;
         The horse knows the way
         To carry the sleigh
Through the white and drifted snow.

Over the river and through the wood--
Oh, how the wind does blow!
         It stings the toes
         And bites the nose,
As over the ground we go.

Over the river and through the wood,
    To have first-rate play.
         Hear the bells ring,
         "Ting-a-ling-ding!"
    Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!

Over the river and through the wood,
And straight through the barn-yard gate.
         We seem to go
         Extremely slow--
It is so hard to wait!

Over the river and through the wood--
    Now grandmother's cap I spy!
         Hurrah for the fun!
         Is the pudding done?
    Hurrah for the pumpkin-pie!

The Mist and All (Pickled Poem Ep. 67)

"The Mist and All" by Dixie Wilson

I like the fall
The mist and all
I like the night owl’s lonely call
And wailing sound
Of wind around

I like the gray
November day
And bare, dead boughs that coldly sway
Against my pane
I like the rain

I like to sit
And laugh at it
And tend my cozy fire a bit
I like the fall
The mist and all

Geography (Pickled Poem Ep. 66)

"Geography" by Eleanor Farjeon

Islands and peninsulas, continents and capes,
Dromedaries, cassowaries, elephants and apes,
Rivers, lakes and waterfalls, whirlpools and the sea,
Valley-beds and mountain-tops — are all Geography!

The capitals of Europe with so many curious names,
The North Pole and the South Pole and Vesuvius in flames,
Rice-fields, ice-fields, cotton-fields, fields of maize and tea,
The Equator and the Hemispheres — are all Geography!

The very streets I live in, and the meadows where I play,
Are just as much Geography as countries far away,
Where yellow girls and coffee boys are learning about me ,
The little white-skinned stranger who is in Geography!

"Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore" by William Brighty Rands

Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore —
No doubt you have heard the name before —
Was a boy who never would shut a door!

The wind might whistle, the wind might roar,
And teeth be aching and throats be sore,
But still he never would shut the door.

His father would beg, his mother implore,
"Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore,
We really do wish you would shut the door!"

Their hands they wrung, their hair they tore;
But Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore
Was deaf as the buoy out at the Nore.

When he walked forth the folks would roar,
"Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore,
Why don't you think to shut the door?"

They rigged up a Shutter with sail and oar,
And threatened to pack off Gustavus Gore
On a voyage of penance to Singapore.

But he begged for mercy and said, "No more!
Pray do not send me to Singapore
On a Shutter, and then I will shut the door!"

"You will?" said his parents; "then keep on shore!
But mind you do! For the plague is sore
Of a fellow that never will shut the door,
Godfrey Gordon Gustavus Gore!"

Bear in There (Pickled Poem Ep. 64)

"Bear in There" by Shel Silverstein

There's a polar bear
In our Frigidaire—
He likes it 'cause it's cold in there.
With his seat in the meat
And his face in the fish
And his big hairy paws
In the buttery dish,
He's nibbling the noodles,
He's munching the rice,
He's slurping the soda,
He's licking the ice.
And he lets out a roar
If you open the door.
And it gives me a scare
To know he's in there—
That polary bear
In our Fridgitydaire.
