The Patterns and Possibilities podcast focuses on the patterns that reflect how we think, act, communicate, and interact with others and some are more systemic in nature. Sometimes the patterns are so deeply woven into the fabric of our lives that we don’t recognize the impact they have on us and the people we live, work, and engage with everyday. Using Human Systems Dynamics, Miss Handie connects through stories and impacts from patterned experiences. Bi-monthly episodes provide insights and approaches to help People Everywhere see, understand, influence and navigate life’s turbulence.

What is the Quality of Your Connections? - Season 4 / Episode 22

Note: This episode is being published about 13 hours later than normal due to some unexpected glitches in the app used to record the podcast.

The episode was recorded on location and the inspiration for it came from a conference I attended this week. What is the quality of your connections? Could they use some attention, nurturing, and energy? If forming healthy connections is a challenge, you’re in the right place.

Press play to hear how we can create and strengthen our connections with a few intentional behaviors that let others know we value our relationships.

What’s Your Standard Birthday Behavior? - Season 4 / Episode 21

I celebrated my birthday three days ago and came to Chicago a couple days later to celebrate all that I’ve poured into myself and others over the past year. Coming to Chicago on or around my birthday has been my pattern for several years, but honoring the investments I’ve made in my growth and the growth of people around me is still somewhat new.

I decided to take a look back at the past year of my life and focus on the time in between my birthday last year and this year. I did it in solitude and in a place and space that I’ve never visited alone. The time I spent there, looking back with gratitude, opened up a well in me that was yearning to be set free. What poured out reminded me that I am a channel of transformation, and I’ve got some big assignments ahead of me. No more excuses. I’m on a mission to be better, live better, do better and move beyond who I am and where I am between every birthday.

Listen in to hear the epiphany I had about birthdays. It just might inspire you to see and understand them differently too and release an influential flow that starts with your own transformation.

What’s your standard birthday behavior and what do you wish for yourself as you get one year older?

What Keeps Us Stuck in Patterns of Boredom? - Season 4 / Episode 20

Have you thought or said these two words to anyone lately…”I’m bored?” If you have, then this episode was recorded with you in mind.

There’s nothing wrong with being bored. It can happen from time to time, but when it becomes a pattern, it’s time to do some soul searching.

I recently listened to a podcast focused on ways that we can avoid boredom, predictability and stagnation. I’m sharing some of what I learned from the podcast as well as some things you can do to go from boredom to thriving again in a Human Systems Dynamics type of way.

What Can We Do to Avoid Pattern Prisons? - Season 4 / Episode 19

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to live in a world of human beings that only exhibit healthy patterns? Unfortunately, that’s not our current reality.

Even when we decide to transform patterns that don’t serve us and others well, we may still encounter human beings who choose to live and operate in unhealthy pattern prisons. Sometimes these individuals consciously and unconsciously invite us to spar and dance with them inside those captive spaces. In order to avoid becoming a pattern prisoner, you’ve got to first see that’s it’s happening and quickly journey into the process of understanding it.

Gaslighting happens to be a wicked pattern prison and I recently found myself standing at its’ front door. Listen in to see and understand how I processed and handled that experience and figure out what you would have done differently.

What Makes Your Jeans Fit So Well? - Season 4 / Episode 18

It seems as though segments of the world are obsessed with working out for the purpose of fitting into their favorite pair of jeans or just to look good at an upcoming big event. There’s nothing wrong with any of that, but I wonder what other great excuses could we find for working out? Do we really need an excuse? What if you and I worked out regularly just because? What do you think would happen? If you’re as curious as I am about that question, press play and listen to what I’ve been shocked to discover about developing a pattern of working out.

Thanks in advance for listening.

Familiar Times Call for Disparate Measures - Season 4 / Episode 17

Familiarity is good. It helps us to feel comfortable and safe and in some ways may strengthen our confidence and self-esteem when the things we see, understand and influence become patterns that we know inside and out.

In this episode, we’re taking a look at familiarity’s opposition - unfamiliarity. We’re talking about it in a Human Systems Dynamics kind of way, and I hope it helps you to feel better when you’re floating in unfamiliar territory.

What If Pain Is Just Part of the Process? - Season 4 / Episode 16

Of the many things that human beings tend to avoid, I imagine that pain has to live at or close to the top of the list. Pain, if left unexamined, untouched, unaddressed and/or unprocessed produces unhealthy patterns that can restrict our ability to enjoy life and celebrate well. I’ve found Human Systems Dynamics to be extremely useful for seeing the pain in my life for what it really is….a pathway to new and healthy possibilities.

Press play and find out how the pain I experienced in one, small room helped me to heal and thrive again. Now, I’m speaking about that pain in bigger rooms that just keep getting bigger.

What Does Ice Cream Have to Do With Leadership? - Season 4 / Episode 15

With all of the extreme heat happening around the country, I can only imagine how much ice cream we’re consuming to help cool ourselves off…even temporarily. Sometimes these uncomfortable weather conditions cause us to get still and when we get still and get comfortable, the possibilities are endless.

In this episode, I am exploring some other ice cream consumption possibilities for us to consider. You might be surprised!

If you enjoy ice cream, what’s your favorite flavor? Mine is chocolate chip!

Which Came First - The Community or the Commitment? - Season 4 / Episode 14

Have you ever heard this question being asked? Which came first - the chicken or the egg? I have and that powerful question came to mind after I recorded this episode about COMMUNITY. It’s a word that we hear now more than ever and I believe social media along with the pandemic helped to make this concept of COMMUNITY something that we all learned to lean on in order to thrive.

COMMUNITY is much more than just the people we live, work and play around. COMMUNITY has expanded to people we may never meet but feel connected to because of our background, interests and sometimes our beliefs.

I’m curious if we have created some addictions to community and connectedness that that aren’t serving us well. That curiosity leads me to ask the question, “Which came first - the community or the commitment?” Press play to see, hear, and understand what lead me this question.

What If They Don’t Want Your Help ? - Season 4 / Episode 13

Human Systems Dynamics and its Adaptive Action is a proven method for transforming any wicked issue. Even though many people, around the world, can provide evidence of its impact, there are some human beings who will resist learning about it and using it for their own, personal reasons. It’s reasonable to want to share the richness of HSD with the people around us….people who may be stuck and suffering in a pattern of hopelessness and despair. What do we do when people we love, like, care about and lead , resist our support and encouragement during tough times? What do we do when they choose to isolate themselves and disconnect from us and our impactful advice and resources? How can Human Systems Dynamics help us to help them?

Can HSD Help You to Thrive in Love? - Season 4 / Episode 10

While around 34.5% of the global population is thought to be single, around 41% of people go through at least one divorce, if not more.

People, of all ages, are entering the dating world for the first time after being married or in a committed relationship for many years. Many of these newly single adults are finding out, the hard way, that getting to know someone is more complicated than it was before social media and all the other technological advances, that we enjoy daily, came to life.

Dating apps and text messaging have made it easy and convenient for shorter and quicker conversations . These modern forms of communication and interaction don’t always work well for people who really want to form meaningful, in person connections and find and attract true love.

I’m curious if Human Systems Dynamics can be used to help single women and men discover if they are romantically compatible? I think there’s a simple way that will prove to be highly useful for those who desire to find and attract a romantic partner.

A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing - Season 4 / Episode 9

Are dress codes in the workplace losing steam or do we still need them as a means of controlling our employees?

What if dress codes were never implemented? Could we trust most employees to make good wardrobe choices?

Would you rather work for a company that does or doesn’t have a dress code? What impact would fashion freedom or boundaries have on your performance?

How do you decide what to wear to work? Do you lean on the side of caution or do you prefer risky business?

These are all important questions. Press play to hear what I think about this hot topic?

Another Theory of Relativity - Season 4 / Episode 8

We’ve all heard the statement, “Everything is relative.” I believe it’s true, and I wanted to explore relativity in an area that you and I will likely face if we are truly living and not just surviving.

When you think about playing it safe in your world, what does that look, sound, and feel like? Is it foreign to you or intimately familiar?

I’ve got my own mountains to climb as it relates to playing it safe. Press play to hear my perspectives and how I’m striving to form a new pattern of relativity.

Cheers for Fears - Season 4 / Episode 7

Fear is a normal experience that human beings encounter everyday. The question is whether we are determined to face our fears or allow them to immobilize us. When you think about the things that make you fearful, are they more powerful than your determination to face them or vice-versa?

This episode reveals one of my deepest fears and how it’s impacted the way I see and experience life through a lens of fear laced with a whole lot of courage.

What fears are you facing head on and which have you decided to sweep under the rug? How is your fear-facing approach working for you?

This is a cheers for fears rather than tears for fears episode. Press play and see what other questions and insights emerge about your fears?

Wanna Getaway from Wanna Get Away? - Season 4 / Episode 6

If you listened to any of the latest travel industry news, I’m sure you’ve heard bits and pieces or the full story about Southwest Airlines “new and soon to become effective” policies for air travel.

These policies are extreme in nature and ancillary to the upcoming “assigned seats” policy that Southwest warned us about last year but has yet to launch.

Critics are already chastising Southwest for their shocking new policy announcements and for swinging the bat at their customers in this harsh way. It feels as though Southwest is now punishing many of the customers that they once put first…the same loyal customers that have kept them thriving financially for decades.

I’m curious who influenced the What, So What, and Now What that led to today’s policy change announcements? What do you think? Are you on board, indifferent, or thinking about which airline you will travel on instead of Southwest?

Press play to find out why I think Southwest’s future may start to look a lot different than the company we’ve always known and respected.

Beating a Dead Course - Season 4 / Episode 5

Popularity contests and the desire to be liked has always been a thing.

The world of social media has placed a wider and deeper emphasis on the concept of liking and disliking someone’s content choices which often adds or detracts from the beholden’s self-esteem.

Being liked may be the position that most, if not all, human beings desire to experience, but what happens when you’re not liked? And, what happens when you don’t like someone, particularly that others seem to adore?

How far are you willing to go to be liked? How uncomfortable does being disliked make you feel? Is being liked overrated? When you don’t like someone, and have to work closely with them, what happens to the relationship and the work?

The Catcher in the Why - Season 4 / Episode 4

The world is shifting at a remarkable speed and not in a good way. Over the past few weeks, federal employees were asked to consider leaving their jobs unexpectedly, unifying and edifying programs were criticized and halted, and illegal immigrants were and are being hauled away from their jobs and residences.

All of these things were happening while millions of Americans prepared to watch Super Bowl 59. As big as the game was, it didn’t serve as a distraction from all the turbulence and uncertainty in the world.

Like many of you, I tuned in to watch the game. What I observed is a pattern that really only happens in the world of football and other sports.

I’m curious if you’ve ever thought about the game of football outside of catching the ball and scoring touchdowns?

What do you notice and how is playing on the field the sane and different from playing off the field?

Tune in to hear how I see the game of football and other real world experiences.

What’s Work Got to Do With It? - Season 4 / Episode 3

As a curious observer of most things, I am drawn to a pattern that is deeply present in the places where I’ve worked. I’ve never understood how or why it became a pattern or why it still has enough breath in it to survive.

In this episode, I’m revealing the pattern with questions for you to reflect on through your lens of experience. I’m wondering if you’ve observed my reflection as a pattern or is this a rarity in the world you work in?

What other patterns have you noticed in the places where you’ve worked? Which ones work and which need to be transformed?
