My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is RL Carpentier III, author of the book Our Lady of the Overlook. There are those on the force who want to set him up for failure - retribution against his father. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Maureen Sherbondy, author of the book The Body Remembers. Maureen Sherbondy’s poems have appeared in Southern Humanities Review, Feminist Studies, Calyx, and other journals. The Body Remembers will be published in October by Unsolicited Press. Maureen has won both fiction and poetry prizes. She holds an MFA from Queens University of Charlotte. In addition to 11 poetry books, Maureen has also published a short story collection and a novel.   In my book review, I stated The Body Remembers is a book of poetry that looks at the life of women through the eyes of their bodies. I enjoyed several of these poems and saw my own life in the words.   I do want to say that I am not typically a reader of poetry and do not feel that I am qualified to review and rate a book of poetry. I know nothing of poetry elements like structure, sound devices, or poetic techniques. I don't know if the imagery met some level of standard or if the meter was right.   However, I do know that I felt the body's response to having a caesarean section, and later to having a hysterectomy. I felt fear, longing, hope, despair, love - all the emotions that live inside my own body and throughout my own life. I felt that Maureen understood me in ways that often go unnoticed. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Tim O'Hearn, author of the book Framed. Tim O’Hearn is a software engineer who works in quantitative finance. He is also an entrepreneur and freelance writer.   As a sports journalist, he covered the 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. As a prolific creator of user-generated content, he has written hundreds of book reviews and thousands of other entries such as restaurant reviews, product reviews, blog posts, and comments-section polemics.   Framed: A Villain's Perspective on Social Media is his first book.   In her book review, Carole O'Neill stated: I read this book with a notebook by my side. There was so much information I felt like I was taking a full semester course. Framed: A Villain’s Perspective on Social Media was my daily tutorial and Tim O’Hearn was my professor.   He grew up with the internet using first, Myspace, then all the way thru Tiktok. And believes everything on the internet today can be traced back to Myspace. Because of that, O’Hearn feels he’s experienced being a puppeteer as well as a puppet. Facebook surpassed Myspace between 2009 and 2012. During that period search interest in both “hits” and “web counter” dropped off steeply.   Although he thinks the content about social media is misleading, this book is the best offering of coverage on Social Media Marketing. His tutorial explains how social media platforms have the same complicated relationship with spam bots that the U.S. Postal Service has with junk mail.   Before you reach the thirty pages of footnotes, you will learn about the “dead internet theory;” how external participants use software to wield godlike influence in the digital world; how he was accused of using, “What if I told you that I could get you more Instagram followers,” as a pick-up line to impress women; and, so much more.   This book cannot be read in one sitting. Especially if you want to retain all the opinions he has to offer. So read it once or read it several times. I enjoyed the storyline and would have given it more stars if it weren't for the multitude of gratuitous explicit scenes. If you don't mind spice or are willing to skip the scenes, you'll find the story has a lot of depth.   We learn early on that the human race is being held together by a treaty that keeps demons, angels, and the seven deadly sins in check. The enforcers of the treaty are the four horsemen. However, the horsemen have to choose human hosts during an event called the crucible.   Both Shade and Theo, teenagers in love, are chosen to participate in the crucible - and Theo is chosen as a horseman, tearing the young lovers brutally apart. Several years go by, but Shade can't move on with her life. Then, strange things begin to happen - things that suggest the treaty is no longer in effect.   What will this mean for Shade? For Theo? For the world? This book is fast-paced and leaves you wanting the next installment.   Content note: There are some rather detailed sex scenes. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Scott Eveloff, author of the book Do Not Resuscitate. Scott Eveloff, MD is a physician living in Overland Park Kansas, having served the medical needs of far-flung towns in rural Missouri for greater than thirty years while actively publishing his perspectives on ethics in medicine. He has published extensively in the medical literature, having authored or co-authored 24 articles and book chapters. He has also authored and published a book detailing the first tumultuous years of his son’s life, Both Sides of The White Coat (People With Disabilities Press, 2000, 127 pages). Such extraordinary experiences as both a physician and parent of a medically complex child have been picked up and published by media as distant as England. His work has also earned him appearances on ABC’s 20/20 Medical Mysteries, ABC News Nightline, and on the Dr. Oz show. Dr Eveloff has remained a passionate advocate for the disabled. Many characters in his novels were inspired by his son’s life and attitude, and are tributes to the dignity that the disabled deserve but often do not receive.   Besides his passion for patient advocacy and compassion in today’s intimidating medical world, Dr. Eveloff’s interests include World War II, the Jewish experience in the Holocaust, and the supernatural. We meet Harry, an intern who finds himself on the wrong side of deaths that appear to be medical errors - his medical errors. He believes he may be a witness to an angel of death and suspects his resident. But everything turns sideways when he begins hearing and seeing the dead.   In addition to dealing with his own grief from the loss of his newborn child, his wife's grief, and the long hours of being an intern, Harry wonders if he is losing his mind. After meeting an elderly doctor, he realizes he has stumbled into something otherworldly - and it will be up to him to save innocent patients - and even those he loves.   Will he be able to get others to believe that the dead are stealing bodies by using modern resuscitation techniques? My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Michael Wendroff, author of the book What Goes Around. Michael Wendroff is the author of What Goes Around, a debut thriller published by Bloomsbury, which bestselling author Lisa Black calls a “brilliant debut,” and bestselling author J.D. Black says “Relentless and gritty, Wendroff expertly weaves a narrative that begs, ‘just one more page…’”   The book was inspired by what his mother said to him the second he was born: “Oh! How nice to see you–Again!”   Michael has an MBA in marketing from NYU, and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. He is a global marketing consultant.   His mother was an editor (watching his mother scribbling in red ink on manuscript pages at home on weekends prepared him for his own editor's comments!). She remarried a literary agent, so Michael was friendly with many authors, and even spent a vacation with Robert Ludlum. Watching Ludlum hand-write his 450 page novels on yellow legal pads didn't dissuade Michael from trying to write a novel (though he's thankful for his PC).   What Goes Around was launched in the USA, UK, and Australia by Bloomsbury (in hardcover, eBook and Audiobook), and foreign language rights have been sold in Italian, Japanese, and Hungarian. It is now into its third hardcover printing, and the paperback edition comes out in October 2025.   Fun fact: Michael's great-grandfather was brought over by Thomas Edison from the University of Copenhagen to work with him. He holds a number of patents, including for plastic buttons. Michael proudly wears button- down shirts whenever he can.   In my book review, I stated What Goes Around is a thriller that will keep you turning the pages long after you say 'just one more chapter.'   We quickly meet the two main detectives, Jack Ludlum and Jill Jarred. Jack attacks his job with brute strength. Jill uses her brains. The two do not get along but are thrust together to find the serial killer.   Jack and Jill find themselves in the middle of a white supremacist murder spree with too many possible suspects and too many motives. Each time they think they've found their 'man,' the tables turn again. And just when the reader is sure they know the ending, Michael gives it a twist you will never see coming.   This book has it all - danger, romance, and characters you will love. He uses human emotions like anger, fear, and despondency. On the other hand, we meet the High King who uses love, meekness, and kindness. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Rebecca Hodge, author of the book Island Endgame. Rebecca Hodge writes suspenseful fiction with plenty of heart.  She's a retired veterinarian and clinical research scientist who lives and writes in North Carolina. Fiction writing is the space where her creative side comes out to play, and her writing centers on characters who discover that life is not a spectator sport. She has three grown sons, one crazy dog, two amazing grandchildren, and one very patient husband. When not writing on the back porch or brewing yet another mug of tea, she loves hiking, travel, and (of course) curling up with a good book.   In my book review, I stated Island Endgame by Rebecca Hodge is a wonderful women's suspense novel that I simply could not put down. Rebecca writes deep characters within beautiful and dangerous settings, this time a remote island in The Puget Sound.   We meet Kenzie Adams, a nurse who is running from the guilt of failing her nephew when he drowned. No longer able to work at the hospital because she can't keep it together, she takes a few months off to work at an idyllic summer camp. Certainly, even someone as damaged as herself can handle band aids and bug bites.   However, from the moment she sets foot on the island, nothing is as it seems. Kenzie considers turning back on day one, but then what? She's sublet her place, no longer speaks to her family, and has taken a leave of absence from her job. So, she stays. But soon, everything goes sideways.   What should be a quiet retreat turns deadly as word of a substantial treasure reaches the ears of some fugitives. Now, she and the rest of the camp staff are in danger. And not just adults, but a child the same age as her nephew. Can she find the strength she needs to save herself and the others? Can she forgive herself enough to try? Or will she have to live with failing yet another child?   I've enjoyed all of Rebecca's books, but this one is my favorite by far! Carole O’Neill’s guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Art Bell, author of the book What She's Hiding. Art Bell is a former television executive. As president of Court TV, he oversaw daily live courtroom coverage and the production of hundreds of hours of original true-crime television series, documentaries, and movies. His memoir, Constant Comedy: How I Started Comedy Central and Lost My Sense of Humor, was a finalist in the 2020 Best Book Awards in both the memoir and business categories. While we learn early on that New York lawyer, Henry Gladstone has been fooled by his ex-wife, Leslie, it isn’t very long before we discover he would give anything to renew their relationship.   Set mainly in Manhattan, the drama eventually details calls from a Russian mobster to frighten both Henry and his former wife with threats of kidnapping, blackmail and even death. Her lies continue to be questioned until Henry is beaten and found by a private investigator hired by his best friend.   Art Bell’s well-crafted story, What She’s Hiding, allows us to see how a man can continue to believe in a woman, even after being robbed of his savings, when love is blind. Leslie was very good at deception. Who killed Amy Winter and why?   As the three uncover details, the picture gets murkier rather than clearer. Something doesn't make sense. And before long, everyone is keeping secrets from someone. I thoroughly enjoyed Ted's characters, all of whom had problems, issues, disappointments, and poor decisions - and yet, they also had kindness, love, determination, and a need for something more than the world seemed ready to offer.   This is a meandering story where you get to meet the characters, remeet them at earlier and later points in their lives, and finally see how they all come together, each touching the other. Hora is a historical fiction set in 1919 India during the time of Ghandi's peaceful resistance. As I read historical fiction, I realize how much history I know very little about. Of course, I have heard of Ghandi, but I knew nothing of General Dyer or his attack at the Jallianwallah Bagh. Although fiction, this novel helped me understand the goings-ons prior to, during, and immediately following this attack that eventually changed the fate of the nation.   Reenita did an amazing job with her characters Aruna, who is an Anglo-Indian schoolteacher, and Ayaz, a Muslim law student with political leanings - as well as a host of minor characters. I also loved how she didn't shy away from difficult topics like British rule that kept the Indian population as nothing more than slaves, the tension between three different religions in the region, romance between those of different backgrounds, the plight of Anglo-Indians, single mothers, standing strong in the face of adversity, and more. Finally, I loved a philosophy put forth that good often comes from bad. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Gregory Grosvenor, author of the book Second Pocket First. Author Gregory Grosvenor grew up in Ansbach, Germany. He moved to the US, earning an MFA from Old Dominion University. For two decades, he has taught writing and the art of the short story at various colleges in Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts. Grosvenor is available for readings, interviews, podcasts, speaking engagements, and book signings.   In my book review, I stated Second Pocket First is humorous mystery that is heavy on the humor. The protagonist, Issey, is a thief. However, Issey is more concerned about the artistic and creative nature of thieving rather than the items themselves - which makes him a less than ideal crook. You see, he pays more attention to his hat, his gloves, and his lock pickers than to the items he steals. And he often breaks the items on the way home because he carelessly tosses them into a duffle bag.   Issey finds himself back in his hometown where the need to steal from people first began, offering the reader great flashbacks into Issey's early years, as well as getting to meet people who knew him as a child. And suddenly, through no fault of his own, he becomes a hero - and everything about his life changes.   He's respectable. He has a romantic partner. He has business cards. When her mother spends the rent money, Aria arrives home to find the family is now on the street. She turns to an old friend, Luke, who found a way out of the old neighborhood.   Although there is an immediate spark between them, Luke and Aria dance around the attraction because neither is ready to commit. We get front row seats as we watch them battle their demons and navigate a new world where peace, hope, and love have a chance to exist. As completely foreign concepts, neither one really knows what to do when life isn't a battlefield.   That's not to say everything is easy. Moving past trauma and finding the right path is not easy. Nor is forgiveness - of others or of self. And what to do when the ones you should love are the ones that keep hurting you?   This story is sweet as two young people fall in love. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jo Taylor, author of the book Margaret of Thibodaux. Jo is an obstreperous, retired ER Nurse who is likely an obstreperous writer too. She grew up with three stepmothers (not at the same time). She's lived on a boat and traced her genealogy back to the year 310 (maybe, probably, you know how genealogy is). She's been married for 33 years and all her hero characters are based on her husband, a hero in real life. Her first book, Postcards: Collected Poems and Short Stories, came out in July 2024. Margaret of Thibodaux, her first novel, released on March 18, 2025.   In Carole’s book review, she stated: 14-year-old Margaret is not going to let her father erase the memory of her deceased mother by bringing another woman (certainly not a stepmother) into their home. Her best friend, Honey tries to convince her there’s nothing to worry about. The new woman is a doctor after all, loved by the entire town. But for the past six years her mother has appeared at her feet and lulled her to sleep with her favorite lullaby. Margaret is convinced that couldn’t possibly continue if another woman occupies the master bedroom.   Jo Taylor masters this coming-of-age story which takes place in Louisiana during the summer of 1974. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Deonna Kay, author of the book The Measure of Enough. Deonna Kay is a native Texan. This makes The Measure of Enough a perfect read for those who love strong character development but like twists and turns.   We meet Kacee who runs her own non-profit to help abused women after leaving her hometown full of broken promises, unfulfilled dreams, and an image she can't shake. Although confident at work, she is an emotional wreck on the inside. We soon learn she must use pills and alcohol to make it through her days and her nightmare filled nights.   What's the worst thing that can happen to Kacee? She is called home where she will have to face her mother and her best friend - two people she hasn't spoken to in years. And then there's the matter of her estranged father as well. Add to this the gray truck the seems to follow her everywhere, a home invasion, and cryptic messages telling her to back off.   What does it all mean? And will getting to the bottom of it help Kacee move forward in life - or embroil her further in emotions she doesn't want to face?   This is a great story that deals with mental health issues, abuse (both sexual and physical), addiction, and eating disorders. It’s her body/mind/spirit dance.   In my book review, I stated Pain, Pumpernickel, & Profound Forgiveness is a beautiful memoir. Through the use of short essays, Rosanne helps us understand her relationship with her father - and her mother - the good and the not-so-good.   As I read, I often felt that Rosanne learned the lessons of the book - love doesn't always look like we think it will, we can change how we see things, compassion is possible even when hurting, and you can be at peace with your past - as she wrote down her memories. Her surprise at what she found was evident!   Rosanne's tales are full of what she calls Divine Interventions - times where logic doesn't adequately explain the outcomes and miracles abound. And through these Divine Interventions, Rosanne learns so much about her father, herself, and their often-troubled relationship.   As someone who has struggled with familial relationships, I enjoyed watching the author discover that there is more than one way to see the past - and how you think about the past is entirely up to you!
