#237 What Feminism Has to do With Money

When we think of feminism, money isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind — but it should be. For generations, women weren’t allowed to open bank accounts, apply for mortgages, or even get a credit card without a man’s signature.

Today, women still face pay gaps, retirement wealth gaps, and social pressure to put others first financially.

In this episode, we’ll explore how feminism and money are deeply connected, why building financial confidence is an act of empowerment, and the steps you can take to create freedom for yourself and the next generation of women.

That's going to take practice, because it's a habit right now for you to spend mindlessly on whatever trigger comes up. And so that's going to take some practice. But once you start to make those changes, then you're going to be able to stop doing those things that you don't want to do.”

#226 Building Financial Intimacy With Your Partner

Do you find it tough to talk about money with your partner? In this episode, we explore the challenges of financial conversations in relationships, focusing on the importance of mutual understanding, confidence, and emotional awareness.

We discuss how emotional factors, like the mental load of managing finances, can impact these talks and share ways to help both partners feel involved and informed. Our guest, Adam Kol of The Couples Financial Coach, brings valuable insights on how to navigate these conversations.

Tune in to discover how empowering both partners with financial knowledge can transform your relationship and finances.

Meet Adam!

Adam Kol is The Couples Financial Coach. He helps couples go from financial overwhelm or fighting to clarity, teamwork, and peace of mind.

Adam is a Certified Financial Therapist-I™, Certified Mediator, and Tax Attorney with a Duke Law degree and a Master's in Tax Law from NYU. He is a husband, dad, and musician, as well.

Adam's wisdom has been shared with The Wall Street Journal, the Baltimore Ravens, CNBC, NewsNation, and more.

“Your partner wants to connect with you about finances. It may seem like they don't, and you might convince yourself that they don't. They do. They may not realize that they're avoiding it or why, but they do because it has such a profound effect on the lives that we live. I mean, it really touches every aspect, from how we raise our families to what we do for jobs, to the kind of food we eat, to the kind of things we have, etc. So your partner does want to feel like they can connect with you. It's just that people don't feel confident in that a lot of times, partly because it is true that money is still a taboo. But keep in mind that this is something where you both will feel a lot better if you're on the same page.”

Jennifer Roskamp is a certified life coach, founder of The Intentional Mom, homeschooling mom of 9 & Gigi (grandma) of 2 who is passionate about helping women who work outside & inside of the home rediscover their purpose, passion, and in managing their homes, their families, their lives, and their own mindset.

Using her 3 secret weapon formulas, Jennifer has helped many thousands of women gain clarity and confidence in what to do (& what to let go of) every day.

“We aren't compartmentalized. The things that we struggle with in one area are usually challenging in other areas as well. Like you say, if we can just start to move the needle forward in some of our habit formation, our ability to follow through, or our ability to live by the routine that we set up, we might be doing it from a budgeting standpoint, but all of a sudden, wow, I have an easier time getting up earlier in the morning too. Once I'm setting the good habits with my money, it makes me want to, and makes it easier for me to follow the good habits in other areas too.”

Understand that it's a habit, and habits can change, but it takes time and practice. You've got to be patient with yourself. Once you realize what the trigger is, you can set up roadblocks so that you aren't falling for those temptations as quickly or as often.”

I'm Ashley Patrick, ex detective turned debt-free CEO of my very own business and stay at home mom of three. Not too long ago, my dreams of staying at home with my kids seemed impossible. I thought I'd have to stay miserable in a high stress demanding job, just so I could retire someday.

After gaining the confidence in my own ability to manage my family's finances and a simple step-by-step plan to make it happen, I was able to pay off $45,000 in just 17 months, which then allowed me to finally quit my job, stay at home with my kids, and build a debt-free business.

Now, my mission is to help moms like you conquer debt and free themselves from the mental load of handling their family's finances.

“You’ve got to know where your money is going, which means you’ve got to track it. You’ve got to look at it and know your numbers. You need to get over the fear, procrastination, and avoidance. You’ve got to make it happen if you want to pay off your debt. It’s not going to just happen on its own, right? You’ve got to be intentional. Being intentional helps you create a realistic money plan. It all goes together, right?”

“You've got to prioritize it if you want to pay off debt. It has to be a priority. It can't be just the last thing because, guess what, there won't be anything left if you just send what's left at the end of the month. I promise you, things will come up, things will happen, and if you see that money sitting there in your account, and if you're not really, really committed and intentional with what you've got sitting there, it will go to something else.”

“Why don't you just pay your people enough to work? Like, I don't get it. We need to just pay a living wage, even if that means that we pay more on the menu.”

“The whole point of budgeting, saving money, and paying off debt is being intentional and mindful of where you are spending your money. Where is your money going and are you making sure it is going where you actually want it to go? So, if you delete the app, you have to be a lot more intentional about spending money on Amazon. There are a couple of extra layers of thought processes there in order to spend the money. So, it makes it a lot harder. It makes it less convenient by just deleting the app.”
