"Meow Wolf" | With Emily Montoya and Vince Kadlubek

Today we have 2 of the co-founders of Meow Wolf on the show!

Meow Wolf is a unique art collective that started as a small group of artists in Santa Fe, New Mexico, dumpster diving for materials and creating immersive art installations in temporary spaces. Over the years, the group grew and evolved into a permanent business, creating an immersive art empire that has captivated audiences around the world.

We explore the origins of Meow Wolf and how they grew from a small group of artists to a massive art collective that spans multiple locations and has hundreds of employees.

We also learn about the unique culture of Santa Fe and how it attracts artists and creatives from around the world. We delve into the psyche of the city and explore why it has become a hub for fringe thinkers, psychonauts, and transients.

Grandmas!

The Offsprung Boys of Comedy reflect on some of the generational and regional anomalies between humans and most other life on the planet.

We're one of the few species that care for our children's children, even after we are unable to reproduce. We discuss some of our own relationships with our grandmothers and share some fun memories.

Time Meowchine

The Catnip Boys of Comedy™ explore the evolution of (lack of) domestic of our toxoplasmic friends.

Most domesticated animals have been drastically shaped by humans.  Livestock has been bred to our tastes.  We selected the best horses and donkeys to lug us around.  Humans domesticated wolves into hundreds of unrecognizable dogs with looks, traits, and personalities to suit our specific preferences.  Yet, in the thousands of years that cats have lived with humans, they have stubbornly remained unchanged.

Cats are independent creatures who seem to be able to take or leave us.  It seems we may need them more than they need us.  That is certainly the cast with the one cat that The CBC™ cannot live without.  MUM mascot Yoshi recently used up his first of 9 lives and there is a vet bill to prove it.  To raise funds, we are running a merch sale for Ramin’s cat.

International Sloth Day

The Metabolically Efficient Boys of Comedy™ celebrate International Sloth Day!

A couple of years ago Shane spent a couple of months in a slothfully time obsessing over sloths instead of doing actual work.  This week the boys sit around and discuss sloth mysteries to prepare you for all of your International Sloth Day (Oct 20) gatherings and festivities.

How have sloths been able to survive for millions of years in a seemingly cutthroat world?  Not only have they been able to hang in there, but they have thrived many times in Earth's history.  Sloths have even evolved multiple times independent of one another!  Sloths' unique evolutionary niches only get more weird and interesting the more we dig into them.  There is even a big sloth mystery that continues to elude scientists today.

Listen in to try to solve it yourself.  Be warned, The MEBC™ may find yourself contemplating sloths for many International Sloth Days to come.

The Flying Boys of Comedy™ booked you a first-class ticket on the MUM Rocketship!   Humans have invented so many ways to explore this world that we take so many human marvels for granted. In-Group Favoritism

This week The In Boys of Comedy™ discuss out-group bias.

Implicit association tests try to determine our gut reactions to others.  How much can they tell us about our biases?  Are we determined by our instincts to discriminate against others?  Or are they a biased way of detecting bias?

Our minds categorize and make snap judgments to navigate life, but these efficiencies in the brain are sometimes a source of human suffering.  Cooperation, forming groups, and relating with others close to us is one of the joys of life, but it can have a cost of excluding or discrimination.

How many of our biases are the product of evolution?  How much of a role does upbringing and culture influence what we think about outsiders?

Join the club and subscribe to Mind Under Matter.  All other podcasts are pure evil.
