In this festive episode of Latin-iced, Dan and Mo talk about holiday traditions in Iceland, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic! 🎄 From Iceland's 13 mischievous Yule Lads and their parents to the notion that in all 3 countries it is imperative to have an estreno (whether it would be for show or to make sure you live to see another holiday)
But that’s not all! Tune in for hilarious Secret Santa mishaps 🎁 (Spoiler alert: it involves Dan being petty and Mo's mother being famous for pulling pranks on people) as well as the inevitable chaos of family gatherings. 🍽️
In this episode they also scientifically prove that Venezuela’s Maltín Polar is superior to Iceland’s Maltextrakt. 🥤
Laugh, learn, and celebrate the season with this episode because no matter where you're from, the holidays are all about love, food, and a little bit of friendly competition. 🥳
This is the second part of episode 7 in which Dan tries to explain to Mo what is going on in Venezuela while taking the scenic route. We tried to pick up where we left off in the previous episode and we also try to reflect on what the Venezuelan future could look like, because at the end in Latin America we all are connected and what happens in one country will in the long run affect all the others in the region
In this episode (which was initially recorded in early August) Dan tries to explain to Mo the current situation in Venezuela while also taking some detours along the way. The current political situation in Venezuela is very complex and goes back several years but at latinos that we are we try to approach it with a bit of humor as it characteristic of our common culture. In the process the camera ran out of storage and we needed to record a part 2 which is also already up and available to listen/watch by the time this video comes out.
Join hosts Dan and Mo as they welcome Raven, a dear friend of the show and a fabulous drag artist just in time for Reykjavík Pride. Together, they dive into a lively discussion about pink-washing and queer-coding, exploring these topics from their unique immigrant perspectives.
The conversation starts into the concept of pink-washing, where Raven tells us how it is to organise and get collaborations around pride week vs. any other time of the year, both as a drag queen and a manager of a venue. Also how corporations and institutions and the media can superficially support LGBTQ+ rights to capitalize on the community without advocating for genuine change.
They also explore queer-coding, discussing characters in media who are hinted to be queer without explicitly stating it. Examples include characters like Ursula from "The Little Mermaid" and Scar from "The Lion King," who exhibit traits often associated with queer culture, yet their identities are never openly acknowledged in the original shows.
Throughout the episode, the hosts and their guest bring a blend of humor, personal anecdotes, and insightful commentary, making for an engaging and thought-provoking conversation. Tune in to hear their perspectives on how Pride celebrations can be both a time of joy and a reminder of the ongoing struggles for true inclusivity and acceptance.
