Prof Deirdre O'Loughlin talks Researching Poverty and Austerity

We are back with a new episode!

In this episode, Finbarr and Erin chat with Prof Deirdre O'Loughlin about her research and newly published book, "Researching Poverty and Austerity: Theoretical Approaches, Methodologies and Policy Applications". A book that was longlisted for the CABS Management Book of the year 2024.

Deirdre's research critically explores the intersection between marketing, consumption, vulnerability and social/public policy within several key contexts, including debt and austerity research, family care, and health and financial services co-creation.

Her research greatly impacts several key domains, specifically in exposing the effects of austerity, credit and debt consumption, highlighting marketing and consumer responsibility, and identifying the social and public policy implications.

'Poverty is a complex global challenge rooted in intertwined social, economic and political factors, which excludes people from participating fully in normalised social and market-based activities. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated poverty-related issues such as food insecurity, and growing numbers of people are having to rely on welfare assistance. This pandemic, coupled with austerity measures implemented across many European countries over the past years, has negatively impacted towns, cities, regions and countries, leaving places and communities depleted.

This edited volume curates a collection of relevant research addressing the challenges of poverty and the political-economic measures that perpetuate it. It adopts a cross-disciplinary approach to covering relevant theories, methodologies and policy-oriented research, highlighting the interlinkages between poverty and austerity that have resulted since the 2008 financial crisis'

Prof Stephen Kinsella and Prof Ciarán Casey discuss 'Policy Failures and the Irish Economic Crisis' and 'The Irish Department of Finance 1959-99'

As we kick off our second year, we will introduce bonus episodes during the upcoming year. In the initial Bonus Episode, guest host Professor Stephen Kinsella chats with Professor Ciarán Casey regarding Irish economics and his books 'Policy Failures and the Irish Economic Crisis' and 'The Irish Department of Finance 1959-99'

Stephen is a Professor of Economics at the University of Limerick, Head of the Department of Economics, and Research Associate at the Rhodes Centre for International Finance at Brown University. Stephen is also a co-director of the Immersive Software Engineering programme.

Ciarán is an economic historian and Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the Kemmy Business School, University of Limerick.

This first book seeks to understand why almost all commentators on the Irish economy were unprepared for the scale of the recent economic crisis. It analyses the public contributions from a broad range of observers, including domestic and international agencies, academics, newspapers and politicians.

Ciarán's second book: By the late 1950s Ireland had suffered three economic crises in as many decades, falling significantly behind the living standards of neighbouring countries. Yet at the turn of the millennium it had reached virtual parity. This was all the more remarkable given the economic turbulence of the 1970s and the deep recession which lasted most of the 1980s.

A major contributing factor to this historic convergence was a series of new economic and social policies pursued from the 1950s. While the cumulative effect of these was not anticipated, they produced a boom in the 1990s that was genuinely exceptional by world standards.

The Department of Finance had primary responsibility for setting economic policy throughout the period. It was also charged with a swathe of other responsibilities in its role as 'the Central Department'. Its Ministers and officials were key agents of the changes that transformed modern Ireland.

In this episode of the KBS Future Thinking Podcast, Erin welcomes back two previous guests, Andrea La Touche and Fionán Coughlan. They discuss the involvement of University of Limerick students in this year's St Patrick's Day procession and the subsequent student 'after-party' at the Milk Market.

Central to Andrea's strategic vision is fostering positive student interaction with the Limerick City community. Presently, an archaeological excavation is underway in Belgium under the guidance of Limerick scholar, Dr Luíc Guyon, with the aim of repatriating Patrick Sarsfield's remains to Limerick, thereby reinstating him as a local luminary.

Marking the 333rd anniversary of the Treaty's ratification, the Patrick Sarsfield Homecoming Project represents a momentous juncture in Limerick's annals.

This initiative signifies the commencement of drawing students into the city centre in a constructive manner. Andrea and Fionán also tease plans to establish a 'Student Market', designed not only to bolster community integration but also to encourage sustainability and entrepreneurial spirit.

Fionán Coughlan talks Local Business, Sustainability, Community Engagement and Limerick

In this episode, our spotlight returns to Limerick as Finbarr and Erin engage in conversation with Fionán Coughlan. Fionán, an alumnus of our International Business Programme, and is a distinguished entrepreneur based in Limerick.

Fionán is the founder, owner, and creative director of Re:Story Limerick.

In December 2020, the foundation for a unique venture was laid at Limerick's Milk Market, where Fionán's savings were invested to establish a storefront. This establishment not only retails handcrafted goods created by Fionán but also allocates space for fellow artisans from the Mid-West region, thereby fostering a direct link between local makers and consumers.

Amidst the pandemic, this period was utilised to meticulously craft a business model that not only seeks sustainability but also emphasises the creation of social value and financial upliftment for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) within both Limerick City and its surrounding county.

Limerick, historically, boasts a rich tapestry of retail diversity. Despite the current economic challenges, the retail sector, along with its associated employment opportunities, stands as a beacon for potential growth and development within the city and county at large.
