Regardless of how would you execute delivery of your digital product, inhouse or by contracting, the value of estimating delivery efforts is essential to the two most influential parameters to your business - time and money. Additionally, estimated cloud hosting costs for dev, UAT and production environments are good to have, as well as minimum expected support engagement if the product requires such an effort. I keep stating that planning is everything. Project management methodology, as agile and as lean as it gets, should not influence the fact that there must be solid metrics against execution of a digital product. Even when contracting a team on TnM basis, expectations should be set for at least the next delivery iteration.

It all starts with poor product and project planning, and it all adds up with poor business and marketing planning on top. Project must be planned by a joint effort of all parties involved. Two months ago I have recored my first episode about MeetMe@ app. Since that moment I had been working on concepting the app as per my 12-milestone process. The app is now live, and is delivered exactly as planned - in time, in budget, in tinniest detail! My product and project management teams have planned out delivery while my design and development teams had delivered the app exactly as planned.

My 12-milestone process focuses on all aspects of the product, not only from design and tech perspective but also from the business perspective, and following my 12-milestone process the MeetMe@ app has reached 3.5k pre-orders on the App store in two months only. First day has resulted in over 17k sessions which produced only 4 bugs! Exactly as I stated months ago - nothing changed - going live as planned: Running across London from one meeting to another, I tend to avoid offices and meet my clients and prospects at various locations across the city - I find it more inspiring, motivational and comfortable for casual, yet, serious discussion. But, even meeting in offices does not change purpose of the idea. Idea is to build an app, for both Android and iOS phones, with a core purpose to lead two (or more) people to meet at a specified spot at a specified time. I want one person to initiate a meeting in a simplest way possible, where main action is to choose where the meeting will take place. Additionally, user can choose time when the meeting will start, and a third option to name the meeting. Action is instant, there is no scheduling in advance, rather initiate a meeting and enter the process, with ability to leave the process and return back to it at will. There is no turn by turn navigation, meeting spot is only a point on map. What I want the focus to be on is simplicity and, most importantly, I want users to stay anonymous. I do not want anything to be stored that may in any way compromise user’s privacy. Each meeting has a unique URL, where anyone with URL can join the “process” of a meeting. Therefore, any number of people can be in the “process”. There is no registration nor social connections between people through functionality. Everyone is related as long as they are in the process, once they leave it, all connections between all people in process are gone. A “process” is functionality that consists of a “live” map where the meeting point will be shown on map as well as all people who joined the meeting with their current live location. While registration is needed, but users should have an option to enter their name and upload their profile photo. Power of wireframes is in details. Experience has taught me not to leave any details to interpretation or free will of a developer. Don’t think this is something against developers, on contrary, this is only in their benefit, as if everything is chewed up to the tiniest detail, all they have to do is to do their work with the most quality and not do your work. Therefore, you optimize the effort of all parties involved into delivery of the product.

Compare all the product could be against the core idea, realize what is really necessary, what has no purpose, what has no purpose just yet, and in which phase the purpose will be generated. We have the concept now, we can realize what delivery phases can be, what is their order of priority, what is a must, what is a decoration that may or may not be needed and when and how you can know that. Key deliverables: A definitive decision of what MVP will consist of. Brief description of each of the screens that visually define the functionality.

Looking to outsource is not any more just a quest for cheaper cost to deliver, but rather a simple need to obtain resources that can deliver, where quality of delivery is a major factor. This fact has obviously lead to increased cost of all services required to deliver a fully functional product — not only software devs and any sort of engineers, but also designers, testers, dev-ops, managers, consultants, anyone really. However, cost is only one of the two main factors, where the other one is much more important!

This fact has obviously lead to increased cost of all services required to deliver a fully functional product — not only software devs and any sort of engineers, but also designers, testers, dev-ops, managers, consultants, anyone really. However, cost is only one of the two main factors, where the other one is much more important!

Get the best out of the idea in the moment all the creativity is in its maximum. This is the point in time everything can still be revised until every stakeholder is satisfied, while the invested time and money are in its minimum. Nothing went too far, it went to the point where revisions are time and cost effective.

Visual representation of your idea speaks a 1000 words and craves further creativity. Fastest way to present something, to brainstorm, and to come up with the concept is sketching by hand. It allows to think fast, progress fast... It cannot be done prior to milestones 1 through 4, as they feed the foundation for creating the concept. These are the first visible results that everyone can understand and discuss. It allows quick iteration and advancement based on solid background.

How come are we talking about monetization of the product as we haven’t even produced wireframes for it? Reason is very simple - monetization of the product influences features of the product. If your mind is set to how to monetize the product at early beginning, your focus on concepting will be on monetization and it will influence what features it will have and how features would work.

When it comes to MeetMe@ - this app is a social tool. It has a vision of mechanisms that can spread the usage of the app exponentially. It is enough to reach one user who will invite other ten for a meeting, meaning one customer acquires another ten, while there is no barrier to entry due to a simplistic Web version that allows usage of product without installing an app.

Therefore, I can conclude that MeetMe@ app is suitable for the Freemium model.

I have dedicated my previous episode to importance of defining Target Audiences for a new digital product so early in the concepting process. We took MeetMe@ app as a use case, started with just one Target Audience, and finalized with four.

By taking that step we had produced a greater leverage for success due to a fact that I recognized a greater, yet defined market, for our new product. What that means is that if we totally fail on one, two or even three, we still have the market.

Not knowing who my users are, and simply assuming they are just like me, I am being ignorant to who will use the product and how. If I know who and how and why, I will be able to adapt the product so that its MVP can serve at least majority of my target audience.

Knowing my target audience, I will know how to market the product. I will know who I need to reach, where to direct my marketing, which businesses to approach, how to present my product to them. I will be able to think about my first users (innovators), my early adopters, my early majority and late majority. I can start thinking about my business and how to make the business where my product is its driving power.

Running across London from one meeting to another, I tend to avoid offices and meet my clients and prospects at various locations across the city - I find it more inspiring, motivational and comfortable for casual, yet, serious discussion. But, even meeting in offices does not change purpose of the idea.

Idea is to build an app, for both Android and iOS phones, with a core purpose to lead two (or more) people to meet at a specified spot at a specified time. I want one person to initiate a meeting in a simplest way possible, where main action is to choose where the meeting will take place.

This is not a GPS/navigation product. This is a product that provides visual information when someone will reach the destination you want to meet them at. The app is about knowing how soon someone will arrive using a visual perception. The app is about knowing whereabouts of a group.

How do you save time and money as all you do here is consume time? Following the process you minimize risks to scatter time and money at the moment things went too far.
