Roomer | EP63

With Leaving It All to Chance, Roomer don’t quite leave everything up to fate. The Berlin outfit’s debut album hums with guitar-driven heartbreak, pairing mind-splitting noise with seductive melodies. Capturing the gritty yet emotive energy of their live performances, the album welcomes in the occasional ear-candy, staying true to the raw physicality of a hazy club show all while sharpening its edges—crafted in true DIY spirit and released by Munich's Squama Recordings. Roomer is the meeting point of four distinct creative forces in the European music scene, united through long-standing friendships and years of collaboration across projects ranging from avant-garde free improv to ethereal folk and ambient electronica. Inevitably—if surprisingly late—the question arose: why not start a band? In their hands, the rock band format became a canvas for their many musical worlds to collide.

1000mods | Interview with Labros | EP62

1000mods

It’s no wonder why 1000mods are considered one of Europe’s most iconic heavy rock bands worldwide. From the early-day breakthrough of stoner rock milestones Super Van Vacation (2011) and Vultures (2014) to the overdriven rock’n’roll charge of Repeated Exposure to... (2016) and the ambitious alt-rock shift of Youth of Dissent (2020), 1000mods let the power of music speak for itself with their no-frills attitude and strong DIY ethics. Transcending genre boundaries and bringing together generations of faithful fans, 1000mods stands as a unique voice of hope and empowerment for those who are lucky to cross their path.

Slated for a November 2024 release on Ouga Booga and the Mighty Oug Recordings (world) and Ripple Music (US), their highly anticipated fifth album Cheat Death is set to be their heaviest record to date, delivering ten powerful sonic statements packed with metal and punk influences while still delivering a few shiver-inducing gems along the way. 1000mods are ready to trample upon the heavy rock world and take no prisoner, and you’d better be ready for it!

Duke Garwood | EP61

Duke Garwood is a British multi-instrumentalist from London.

Duke Garwood has released six studio albums: Holy Week, Emerald Palace, The Sand That Falls, Dreamboatsafari, Heavy Love, and Garden of Ashes.

He also played guitar on The Orb's single "Perpetual Dawn," appeared on the first two albums (Fur and Derdang Derdang) of the rock band Archie Bronson Outfit on clarinet and rhaita (a Moroccan reed instrument), and most recently played guitar on Mark Lanegan's album Blues Funeral and clarinet on Savages' album Silence Yourself, among many other guest appearances.

In 2011, Garwood collaborated with artist Shezad Dawood in the concert performance 'New Dream Machine Project', which resumed the 1968 recording of Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones and Master Musicians of Jajouka. The new generation of "Master Musicians" and Garwood recreated that moment around the three-metre tall Dreamachine, originally invented by Brion Gysin and created for the occasion by Dawood.

In February 2013, Ipecac and Heavenly announced the signing of Duke Garwood & Mark Lanegan. Lanegan described Garwood as "one of his all time favorite artists" and working with him as "one of the best experiences of his recording life". Their debut collaboration album Black Pudding was released in May 2013.

After a successful collaboration with Mark Lanegan, Heavenly announced it had signed Garwood in November 2014 and his next solo album Heavy Love would be released through the label on 9 February 2015. On Lanegan's 2017 US tour, Garwood performed as the opening act, as well as a sideman in Lanegan's band.

In 2021, Garwood featured in Morcheeba’s song “The Edge Of The World” which is the last song of their album Blackest Blue. ~ Wikipedia

Blues Pills | Interview with Elin Larsson and Zack Anderson | EP60

Infamous for their charismatic performances, the rock act Blues Pills had a fast journey of success. They went straight from dirty, crowded bars to playing at some of Europe’s biggest festivals such as Download, Rock am Ring, Hurricane, Southside, Hellfest and Wacken. Their self-titled debut album went straight into the European charts and hit #4 in Germany and their second album Lady in Gold landed a #1. The 3rd self produced album Holy Moly! followed the success of the two previous records. Now they’re ready to push the bar even further with their 4th studio release, Birthday, as singer Elin explains, the band’s time in the studio saw the birth of more than just a record.

The album is produced by Grammy nominated songwriter and producer Freddy Alexander who’s worked with artists like The Chainsmokers and the Veronicas, there’s an energy and live-feel to the new songs that bespeaks a confidence in their ability to craft new compelling sounds without tampering with the explosive formula that got them their start – a sound that’s as eclectic as it is heavy as it is fun.

MaidaVale | Interview with Matilda Roth | EP59

Hailing from various backgrounds both musically and geographically, Swedish psych wonder MaidaVale have had the ability to capture audiences with their spirited energy ever since starting out on the Stockholm underground scenes a decade ago. The band combine neo-psychedelia and krautrock with influences ranging from post-punk, funkadelia and the North African blues.

With acclaimed debut “Tales of the Wicked West” (2016), they quickly took on big European rock scenes and festivals. More kraut influenced sophomore album “Madness is too Pure” (2018) confirmed the band’s place in the psych rock scene with its bold and experimental take on the genre, nominating them for the Swedish music prize P3 Guld in the rock category alongside acts like Graveyard.

On their forthcoming third album ‘Sun Dog’, working with producers Kalle Gustafsson Jerneholm and György Barocsai, MaidaVale paint with a larger, bolder and brighter color palette, immersing themselves more than ever into their unique take on neo-psychedelia.

GLAZED CURTAINS | EP58

With influences from the 1960s all the way to the age of modern rock, the Austrian band GLAZED CURTAINS is keeping the spirit of rock alive. With a modern twist of the rock genre comparable to bands like Highly Suspect, Badflower and Kid Kapichi, the band really encaptures what the essence of guitar music is. Their music is not only for the old school rock listener but also for the people who are into overdriven guitar music and for those who like to have a little party.

Let yourself be thrown into an experience of ordinary live energy and emotions caused by the bitter sides of life that ultimately make it worth while. GLAZED CURTAINS is not afraid of talking about honest feelings, anxiety and social issues that many people might be scared of admitting.

A GLAZED CURTAINS concert is the perfect place for expressing feelings and showing love. It creates a safe atmosphere of celebrating life but also a bonding feeling of respect towards each other and welcoming every person just the way they are.

Amaranthe - Interview with Olof Mörck | EP54

Amaranthe

Triumphs, tragedies, rebirths and upheavals… Life is often defined by its moments of revelation. 15 years into a career that has seen them become one of metal’s most ruthlessly individual and uplifting bands, AMARANTHE are about to make their most definitive and revealing move. Three years on from the widely acclaimed Manifest, Sweden’s masters of thunderous, melodic futurism are about to unveil The Catalyst.

Formed in 2008, AMARANTHE walked their own unique path from the start. With a sound that combined the sharpest, cutting edges of melodic metal, electronic rock and razor-sharp pop, their impact was immediate and undeniable. Kicking off with their self-titled debut in 2011, the Swedes blazed a trail through the European metal scene and beyond, swiftly establishing themselves as a dazzling one-off, not least due to the unprecedented triple vocal attack that paired clean tones with exquisite melodic sensibilities and feral growls. Over the next few years, the sextet steadily grew in stature, releasing a series of praised studio records that jabbed persistently at the boundaries of modern metal.

From 2013’s fiery The Nexus and its immaculate follow-up Massive Addictive, through to the experimental bravery of 2016’s Maximalism and 2018’s Helix (which saw the arrival of Dynazty vocalist Nils Molin, replacing the departing Jake E), AMARANTHE have been an unwavering breath of invigorating fresh air, renowned for absurdly catchy and crushing pop-metal anthems and for euphoric, eye-popping live performances all over the globe.

Fast forward to 2023, and change is in the air. Pieced together over the last three years, The Catalyst is a self-evident breakthrough moment, and the most exhilarating and idiosyncratic record AMARANTHE have ever made.

One major contributory factor to this impressive forward stride is the arrival of AMARANTHE’s latest new member. Slotting in neatly alongside Elize Ryd and Nils Molin is the band’s new master of growls, Mikael Sehlin.

Now fully installed as the sixth piece of the AMARANTHE jigsaw – alongside Olof Mörck, Elize Ryd, Nils Molin, bassist Johan Andreasson and drummer Morten Løwe Sørensen – Mikael Sehlin can be heard revelling in his new creative partnerships on The Catalyst.

Due for release early in 2024, The Catalyst fully delivers on the promise of its title. AMARANTHE have always been original thinkers and maverick songwriters, but never with as much power and panache as they demonstrate this time around. Both their finest album to date and a collection of songs that deftly redefine every aspect of the Swedes’ sound, The Catalyst is destined to propel its creators ever higher up the modern metal ladder. For Olof Mörck, it represents the culmination of 15 years of hard work and the breathless pursuit of a wholly original musical vision. Change is inevitable. Victory is assured.

Infected Rain - Interview with Lena Scissorhands | EP53

Infected Rain

INFECTED RAIN experienced their most successful years yet in 2022 and 2023, commencing with the release of their fifth full-length album, Ecdysis. The album garnered prime media acclaim, hundreds of thousands of streams and views, and debuted in the Top 20 on the US Current Hard Music charts - all accented by worldwide performances at major festivals and with the likes of Butcher Babies, Wednesday 13 and more. On February 9, 2024, the band will climb even higher with their multifaceted sixth album, TIME. Described by the multinational band as “an homage to every fleeting second, every heartbeat, and every breath that has led us to this moment,” TIME was once again produced, mixed and mastered by Valentin Voluta, and combines the deft talents of returning members Vidick (guitars, cover artist), Eugene Voluta (drums) and famed frontwoman Lena Scissorhands (vocals), plus introduces new member Alice Lane (bass) to the fold. INFECTED RAIN exercise their trademarks with TIME, tastefully accenting the introspective musical journey with effectively-placed progressive, electronic and even nu-metal features amid ethereal passages. First track “BECAUSE I LET YOU” bursts in with undeniable energy, boasting aggressive lyrics and Lena Scissorhands’ swift, menacing delivery. Previously released first single “DYING LIGHT” marches with subterranean heaviness and rhythmic grooves beneath eerie vocals and keys, and even snaps into an EDM passage, showcasing the dynamic delivery of the band in 2024. “NEVER TO RETURN” flirts with trip-hop elements and far eastern instrumentation before the melodic ode to self-empowerment “LIGHTHOUSE” crashes in to juxtapose soft verses and intense auditory shifts. Album standout and djent driven “VIVARIUM” warns of society’s fickle freedoms as Lena Scissorhands delivers some of the album’s most hair-raising screams amid a haunting, ominous atmosphere, while fast-paced burners like “THE ANSWER IS YOU” and “ENMITY” flash between various EDM, synthwave and even drum and bass brushed transits amid bludgeoning rhythms. Intense “GAME OF BLAME” explores themes of hypocrisy and emotional pain delved out by those we love while boasting one of the album’s most searing breakdowns, while tracks like “PANDEMONIUM” and “UNPREDICTABLE” detail the uncontrollable energy of the future and past, respectively - boasting lofty, angelic verses with hard-hitting guitars and punching drums. Italian/English-language journey “PAURA” closes out the album with a path to self-discovery - beckoning the listener to understand that we limit ourselves with our own fears, and must harness the pain to overcome. TIME ends in a state of calm with ambient finisher “A SECOND OR A THOUSAND YEARS” - drawing the curtains closed on yet another fantastic, experimental expedition by rising stars INFECTED RAIN.

Brume - Interview with Jamie and Jordan | The Story of Marten | EP52

Brume (pronounced ‘Broom’) are living proof that California is not all sunshine and easy living. The San Francisco-based quartet organically blends doom metal, goth, and indie rock into a sometimes monolithic, sometimes delicate blend of heaviness that resides firmly on the darker side.

After a decade of sultry sounds and hair-raising crescendos, Brume push sonic experimentation and delightful genre-bending even further on their third full-length album “Marten”. The expansion into a four-piece with the addition of Jackie Perez Gratz on cello and vocals has opened a cosmos of new possibilities that the Californians determinedly explore. Weaving soaring melodies over melancholic doom pop generates songs that are equally intimate and haunting yet also massive and crushing.

Brume originally formed as a trio in 2014 when guitarist Jamie McCathie from Bristol, England began making music with bass player and vocalist Susie McMullan from Baton Rouge, Louisiana after discovering a shared passion for both trip-hop and sludge. The addition of Jordan Perkins-Lewis on drums completed the line-up with his rich and experimental style of drumming, and set the stage for the band’s recordings.

The trio quickly gained momentum with their doom metal albums “Rooster” (2017) and “Rabbits” (2019), the former being named “Album of the Year” by The Ripple Effect and the latter earning the top spot on Wonderbox Metal’s “Best of 2019” list. Brume also left their mark onstage, appearing at Desertfest London in 2017 and Desertfest New York and SXSW in 2019, along with many more shows on both sides of the Atlantic.

On third album “Marten”, Brume perfectly balance the melancholic power of the cello with forceful vocals and dueling guitar conversations. The complex mood swings that seamlessly move from sensuous and restrained to soaring and explosive found a perfect producer in Sonny DiPerri (Emma Ruth Rundle, Lord Huron, Portugal The Man). With the right engineer behind the board, the San Franciscans adopted a songwriting approach that emphasised poetry and lyrics rather than starting with a riff. This way of working uncovered a more vulnerable side of the band.

With “Marten”, Brume take a bold step toward their musical future by challenging first themselves and now listeners to move from comfortable spaces toward more challenging, less familiar destinations.

Howling Giant | EP49

HOWLING GIANT Every song on HOWLING GIANT's sophomore album "Glass Future" tells its own story. Yet even without an overarching concept, all could exist within the same universe. Such crafty lyrical world-building is hardly surprising coming from a trio of enthusiastic fantasy and science fiction aficionados. "Glass Future" downright asks to inspire a book or graphic novel, even as it explodes with furious energy and thunderous acrobatics. Musically, "Glass Future" offers a continuation and evolution of all the elements that made the debut album "The Space Between Worlds" (2019) such a success. HOWLING GIANT entice classic metal and hard rock to interact dynamically with spacy, prog-infused passages, desert and psychedelic metal moments, rock organs, catchy hooks, and top everything off with soaring harmonized vocals. HOWLING GIANT hail from one of the most legendary places for music on earth: Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Despite the city's reputation for assembly-line pop country, the town called Music City is a place of deep history, where brilliant songwriters and virtuoso session players keep dozens of musical legacies burning bright. Fertile ground, then, for a preeminent fuzz-psych power trio who consciously live in the pocket of that lineage. During the last two years, the trio integrated bassist Sebastian Baltes, the son of German metal legends ACCEPT's former bass player Peter Baltes, fully into the band as a co-writer. HOWLING GIANT take a gargantuan leap forward with "Glass Future" that brings their outstanding musicianship and golden-throated triple vocal attack fully into stride. Nothing to do but try to keep up and enjoy the stunning sonic scenery along the way!

Coogans Bluff

From the very start they’ve been critically acclaimed yet so many have failed to put the right genre tag on them. It hardly seems possible to find an adequate classification for their music with so many epochs and styles floating in, that’s for sure. Every album bears new influences, highlights certain musical parts and lets others move further to the background – or disappear completely. Krautrock, Progressive, Fusion, Spacerock, Psychedelic and Bluesrock – it’s all part of the routing. Even Stonerrock, Funk and Heavy-something if you count in older material

Heavy Temple - Interview with High Priestess Nighthawk - Interceptor Beyond Podcast EP47

HEAVY TEMPLE are back from extensively touring across the United States and for the first time also Europe. They are also back from the rehearsal room where the making of new songs became far more of a group effort than on the debut album. And finally back from Animal Farm studio where John Forrestal gave the new album "Garden of Heathens" a rich and warm organic sound that is also crisp and crystalline. Where the debut full-length "Lupi Amoris" charged forward like a roaring mastodon, "Garden of Heathens" comes across more diverse and sophisticated without losing punch or heaviness. And while the powerful vocals of frontwoman High Priestess Nighthawk provide a strong gravitational pull, HEAVY TEMPLE always remain a riff-first kind of band. Even so, the heavy-touring Philadelphia, PA trio have expanded their range to encompass an even wider breadth of rock and metal road stops, from BARONESS to THE BEATLES and BLACK SABBATH to FU MANCHU – with many crossroads in between. Lyrically, Nighthawk wrote her most personal lines so far as the album revolves thematically around things that aren't real – from the American Dream to relationships. No matter how shiny something looks, below the surface lurk anxiety, betrayal, and doubt. HEAVY TEMPLE came into existence on the 2012 winter solstice during a night filled with the pure enjoyment of creating and playing heavy music. Once established, the band started playing live and soon got to tour alongside such notables as RUBY THE HATCHET, ROYAL THUNDER, and CORROSION OF CONFORMITY and they also got to play at notable festivals such as The Maryland Doom Fest and Psycho Las Vegas among many others. Following the two EPs "Heavy Temple” (2014) and "Chassit" (2016) and a number of singles, HEAVY TEMPLE at last took a break from heavy touring to record their first full-length. "Lupi Amoris" (“Wolves of Love”) that was released in 2021 to strong applause from both critics and followers alike. This album opened new doors including more festival appearances, a US tour with THE OBSESSED and their first tour of Europe with friends and labelmates HOWLING GIANT. HEAVY TEMPLE are not just back, they are here to stay. "Garden of Heathens" gives strong testimony that the trio is pushing hard to broaden their spectrum and break through any preconceptions and obstacles in front of them. "Garden of Heathens" sheds new light and a wider perspective on heavy and desert rock, psychedelia, and doom metal. Check this out!

Hippie Death Cult - Interview with Eddie Brnabic ◆ Interceptor Beyond Podcast EP46

Hippie Death Cult

Hippie Death Cult's journey through shameless and triumphant artistic expression has led them to become a vibrant force in the realms of psychedelia and riff-heavy rock n' roll. Throughout their formative years, the band underwent what proved to be a very significant evolution, transitioning from a 4-piece to a more cohesive and harmonious power trio. This lineup currently consists of guitarist and founder Eddie Brnabic, vocalist and bassist Laura Phillips, and drummer Harry Silvers. In 2019, Hippie Death Cult caught the attention of Cursed Tongue Records, who signed them for the release of their highly anticipated album "111." The record was met with widespread acclaim, solidifying their place in the music scene. Building on this success, the band made another significant move in 2021 by signing with Heavy Psych Sounds Records. This partnership resulted in the release of their album "Circle of Days" and a split release titled "Doom Sessions Vol.5" with label mates High Reeper. Both full-length albums soared to the very top of the Doom Charts as well as many “Album Of The Year” lists, further cementing their status as a rising force in the genre. Beyond their studio work, Hippie Death Cult is renowned for their electrifying and passionate stage performances. Their captivating stage presence have taken them on tours across the United States, Canada, and Europe, where they have garnered a dedicated and growing fanbase.

Blackwater Holylight and Iron Jinn ◆ Interceptor Beyond Podcast EP45

Blackwater Holylight

Blackwater Holylight, as the name suggests, is all about contrasts. It’s a fluid convergence of sound that’s heavy, psychedelic, melodic, terrifying and beautiful all at once. As a heavy band, their songs aren’t anchored to riffs, but rather riffs come and go in waves that surface throughout the band’s meditative, entrancing songs. It’s a hypnotic sound, with orchestral structures that often build tension and intrigue before turning the song on its head — not by simply getting louder or heavier, nor by just layering elements. They expertly subvert the implied heaviness of a part, dissecting it and splaying the songs guts out to seep across the sonic spectrum.

IRON JINN

Iron Jinn are Oeds Beydals (The Devils Blood/Molassess/Death Alley), Wout Kemkens (Shaking Godspeed/De Niemanders), Bob Hogenelst (Birth of Joy/Molassess) and Gerben Bielderman (Pauw) and their debut full length on Stickman Records (21st of April 2023) is a frantic album that follows the logic of a dream; none. The nine songs on the album are the result of a chaotic accumulation of modern world impressions, information and conversations that are forcefully pushed through a human funnel: the minds of Iron Jinn.
