Interview with Guenther Steiner

Recorded at the F1 Arcade in Philadelphia, October 2025, I interviewed ex Haas team principle, and star of the Netflix show, Drive To Survive, Guenther Steiner. We talked about his time in F1, as well as earlier in his career working with Carlos Sainz Senior and Colin McCrae in World Rallying, his thoughts on team management, and what he would change if his was boss of F1 for a year.

This was a fun and wide ranging chat with Guenther, who is about to start a tour to promote his new book, Unfiltered.

F1’s Modern Evolution - 2000 to the Present Day.

F1’s Modern Evolution

Episode Description:

In this episode of In Formation, host Jamie Muffett takes you through the modern era of Formula 1, spanning from the early 2000s to the present day. From Michael Schumacher’s dominance with Ferrari to the rise of Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes and Sebastian Vettel, and finally to Max Verstappen’s current reign with Red Bull, this period has seen seismic shifts in team supremacy, game-changing regulation overhauls, and a surge in global popularity.

We kick things off in the 2000s, when Ferrari and Schumacher rewrote the record books with five consecutive world titles, before rule changes saw Fernando Alonso, Kimi Räikkönen, and a young Hamilton emerge as new champions, followed by Vettel. The introduction of hybrid power units in 2014 launched the Mercedes dynasty, with Hamilton leading the Silver Arrows to an unprecedented run of success. But nothing lasts forever—the Verstappen era began in 2021, following one of the most dramatic seasons in F1 history.

Beyond the on-track battles, we also explore key moments that have shaped the sport, including:

🏎 The tragic loss of Jules Bianchi in 2015, leading to major safety advancements like the Halo device.

📺 The Netflix effect—how Drive to Survive fueled an explosion of F1 popularity, especially in the United States.

📈 The addition of Sprint Races and new venues, including the Miami and Las Vegas Grand Prix.

🔧 Major regulation shifts in 2022, bringing back ground effect aerodynamics and larger wheels to shake up the grid.

From the Ferrari vs. McLaren rivalry of the mid-2000s to the Mercedes vs. Red Bull battles of today, this episode dives deep into how F1 has evolved over the last two decades, setting the stage for an exciting future.

Turbos, Tragedy & Triumph: Formula 1 in the 1980s & 1990s

In Formation – Episode 2: Turbocharged Triumphs & Tragedies (1980s–1990s)

Host: Jamie Muffett

Produced by: RPS Audio

The 1980s and 1990s were two of the most transformative decades in Formula 1 history—an era of immense speed, legendary rivalries, and heartbreaking tragedy. From the turbocharged battles of the '80s to the rise of Schumacher in the '90s, these decades saw the sport evolve in ways that would shape F1 forever.

The 1980s: The Turbo Era & the Prost-Senna Rivalry

  • Turbocharged dominance—how F1 cars reached over 1,000 horsepower before turbos were banned.
  • McLaren vs. Williams—the two teams that defined the decade.
  • Prost vs. Senna, one of the greatest rivalries in F1 history, leading to controversial clashes at Suzuka.
  • Niki Lauda’s final championship (1984) and the emergence of Ayrton Senna as a superstar.
  • The banning of turbo engines (1989) and the shift to naturally aspirated 3.5L engines.

The 1990s: Triumph, Tragedy & Schumacher’s Rise

  • Senna vs. Prost continues, culminating in Suzuka 1990, where Senna controversially secured his title.
  • The dominance of Williams, featuring the groundbreaking active suspension technology in 1992.
  • The darkest weekend in F1 history—Imola 1994, where the sport tragically lost Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger, forcing F1 to rethink safety.
  • Michael Schumacher’s rise, from winning back-to-back championships (1994, 1995) with Benetton to his move to Ferrari.
  • The resurgence of McLaren, with Mika Häkkinen’s back-to-back titles (1998, 1999), setting the stage for F1’s next chapter.

Join Jamie Muffett as he takes you through these two thrilling decades of F1, where technology, talent, and tragedy shaped the sport we know today.

The Birth of Formula 1

Welcome to the debut episode of In Formation, where we dive into the rich history of Formula 1. In this episode, we explore the sport’s formative decades—the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s—a time of raw speed, groundbreaking innovation, and ever-present danger.

The 1950s: The Dawn of Formula 1

  • The first-ever F1 World Championship race at Silverstone in 1950, won by Giuseppe Farina (Alfa Romeo).
  • The rise of Juan Manuel Fangio, who dominated the decade with five titles.
  • The shift from front-engine to mid-engine cars, with Cooper leading the way by the end of the decade.

The 1960s: The British Revolution

  • Lotus, Brabham, and McLaren emerge as dominant forces, pushing Ferrari into the background.
  • The Lotus 25 (1962) introduces the monocoque chassis, revolutionizing car design.
  • The Ford-Cosworth DFV engine (1967) changes the game, powering teams to success for years.
  • The tragic side of F1 remains—Jim Clark’s death in 1968 shakes the sport.

The 1970s: Innovation vs. Danger

  • The rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt defines the decade, with Lauda’s miraculous return after a near-fatal crash in 1976.
  • Aerodynamics and ground effect technology (Lotus 79) give cars unparalleled speed and grip.
  • The introduction of turbocharged engines (Renault, 1977) sets the stage for the future.
  • Safety slowly improves, but the risks remain high—Formula 1 is still one of the most dangerous sports on the planet.

Join me, Jamie Muffett, as we unravel the stories, rivalries, and game-changing innovations that shaped the first three decades of F1. Whether you're a longtime fan or just discovering the sport, this is the perfect place to start.
