Impact on a Small Scale | Revisiting Jimmy Westerheim | The Human Aspect

What if the greatest impact you’ll ever make isn’t measured in headlines or global reach but in the way you show up for the people right around you?

In this episode, Jimmy Westerheim, founder and CEO of The Human Aspect, returns to the podcast for a conversation that will shift how you think about leadership, impact, and community.

Jimmy is someone who has seen the world up close, from growing up in a small Norwegian village to spending years in conflict zones like Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, and yet, what stands out most to him isn’t the “big” stories. It’s the small, deeply human ones.

We talk about why local heroes often go unseen, how solidarity is built in unexpected ways, and why the tiniest gestures can sometimes be the ones that echo the loudest. Jimmy reminds us that change doesn’t always look like movements or revolutions, it often begins with everyday people, choosing to care and choosing to act.

This conversation will leave you thinking about your own community differently and hopefully inspired to notice the power you already hold to create ripples of change, right where you are.

So grab your headphones, settle in, and let Jimmy’s reflections guide you back to the heart of what really matters.

Mental Health Matters

Every year on October 10, people around the world pause to shine a light on mental health: its struggles, and its urgent importance. That’s World Mental Health Day, created in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health to raise awareness and reduce stigma. But it’s not just one day. For us at #impact, this topic has been part of our heartbeat from the very beginning, because stories of mental health aren’t a niche. They’re human. They mirror our ups and downs, our communities, our work, our families.

Connecting Your Dots on Your Own Doing Good Journey | Mabel Sieh

She speaks about letting go of the need to control every detail and instead staying open to life’s surprises. “The older I get, the more I feel, there’s just so much you can plan, but so much more you can’t”, she says.

Constant change, acceleration, ambitions and aspirations, so many of us are trying to balance the many layers of living in a complex world and creating our own meaning through impactful work. Mabel Sieh’s story is allowing us to take a big collective breath. Maybe even a sigh of relief.

From her beginnings as a teacher and journalist to leading impactful initiatives in Hong Kong and most recently a transformative trip to Nepal, Mabel’s path is anything but linear, and that’s exactly what makes it so powerful.

She speaks about letting go of the need to control every detail and instead staying open to life’s surprises. “The older I get, the more I feel, there’s just so much you can plan, but so much more you can’t,” she says.

There’s a moment in the conversation where Mabel recalls being invited to a corporate event, seemingly insignificant, but that encounter eventually led her back to Nepal, where she felt all the pieces of her past start to click into place.

“I have the privilege to experience a lot of things coming back to my life in a very good and positive way.”

It’s this idea of serendipity that runs like a thread throughout the episode, not as something accidental, but as something that reveals itself when we slow down enough to notice.

As you listen, you will not just walk away inspired by Mabel’s story, but invited to reflect on your own.Her advice? “Connect your own dots.”

This is more than just a conversation, it’s a gentle, powerful reminder that our lives as well as our work don’t have to be perfectly planned to be deeply impactful.

🎧 Tune in to hear how Mabel Sieh lives a life shaped by curiosity, courage, and compassion and why that might be the most powerful blueprint of all.

Arts, Voice, Health, and Human Potential | Jennifer Davison

Listen on Apple, Spotify or any of your favorite Podcast players.

Meet Jennifer Davison, opera singer, arts for health professional, social entrepreneur, teacher and mother.

In this episode we explore the transformative potential of the arts and voice in personal and community well-being. Jennifer shares her insights on appreciating beauty, the audacity necessary for change-making, and the role arts play in mental, physical, and spiritual health.

The Importance of Beauty and the Arts

Building on Dostoevsky’s famous line, “beauty will save the earth,” Jennifer shares that the arts serve as a reminder of what matters to us and are pivotal in connecting us emotionally, physically, and cognitively to our humanity and others around us.

The Role of the Voice

The voice, according to Jennifer, is a profound instrument. It is an extension of our breath, the essential source of life energy.

“The voice is the muscle of the soul,”

It is also key to tapping personal health benefits in the most surprising ways. Surprising, because of their simplicity. And you will be just as amazed as host Regina when she heard Jennifer share all about it. Find out how you can use your voice to physically energize, balance, and calm yourself which is a foundational aspect of her work with Arts for Health.

Programmes and Initiatives: Arts for Health and Beyond

Jennifer discusses her programme, “Aufatmen” a singing initiative for individuals suffering from long COVID and other post-viral conditions. The programme teaches participants to use their voices for resonance and inner sound baths, positively affecting their physical health by calming the body and facilitating healing. Through connection with others, even in a virtual setting, participants experience significant social and emotional benefits.

Artistic Audacity and Its Impact

The concept of audacity is woven throughout Jennifer’s narrative. She relates it to artists like Wagner, who defied norms to create monumental works, inspiring others to think and act big in their fields. Jennifer believes that embracing our own audacity allows us to unlock our potential and contribute significantly to the world.

 “Let’s all up our game.”

A Call to Action: The Untapped Potential of the Arts

Jennifer passionately argues for the inclusion of the arts in health and well-being policies. She sees an opportunity for a regenerative system, where available artistic resources can be leveraged to improve public health, social cohesion, and personal well-being. This perspective challenges policymakers and funders to recognize the economic and social benefits of supporting arts in health initiatives. Her insights into the interconnectedness of arts, health, and community reveal a pathway where each of us, like critical yeast (Thank you Krista Tippet for inspiring us all with your gorgeous conversations On Being!) , can contribute to a broader societal rise. Whether through breathing exercises, artistic expression, or social interaction, Jennifer’s message is clear: the arts have the power to transform lives, and their potential is just waiting to be tappe...

Human Connections Beyond Labels | Jimmy Westerheim | The Human Aspect

Listen on Apple, Spotify or any of your favorite Podcast players.

Disclaimer: This episode discusses mature topics, including suicide. If you’re struggling, please reach out to a professional healthcare provider for support.

Meet Jimmy Westerheim, the founder and CEO of The Human Aspect, to delve into a conversation that unravels the complexity of human experiences and mental health.

A Journey Through Life’s Challenges

Jimmy is passionate about exploring what makes us human. With The Human Aspect, he has built the world’s first and largest digital tool, The Life Experience Library, to guide individuals through their life challenges.

During our conversation, Jimmy shared his personal journey, which was filled with moments of feeling like an outsider and grappling with loneliness, leading him to a life of exploration and connection across 60 countries and sectors like sports, shipping, and social entrepreneurship.

Human Connections Beyond Labels

What sets The Human Aspect apart is its mission to connect people through their shared human experiences. Jimmy believes that while exploring life’s challenges, it is our “human aspect” that binds us beyond societal labels. In our discussion, he reflected on his upbringing, the feelings of being different, and the turning points that led him to build a life focused on understanding and supporting others through adversity.

From Personal Struggles to Global Impact

Jimmy’s story is a testament of resilience. At ages 13, he faced the depths of loneliness and contemplated suicide. Surviving that dark period gave him a powerful drive to forge a life beyond any limitations. Later, while in Singapore, a severe injury forced Jimmy to reevaluate his path, leading him to leave his career in shipping and join organizations like Doctors Without Borders. These pivotal moments culminated in his efforts to create a resource that could help others find light in their darkest times.

The Power of Shared Stories

The Human Aspect’s Life Experience Library provides a platform for individuals to share their toughest life challenges. Through structured interviews, individuals gain the opportunity to find language and strength in their stories. Jimmy emphasizes the importance of creating space for vulnerability and understanding, which helps individuals and their supporters navigate mental health struggles.

Redefining Mental Health

Jimmy’s innovative work is more than just creating a digital archive, it’s about redefining the narrative of mental health as a natural aspect of life. By fostering honest conversations and using digital tools wisely, we can connect on what truly makes us human. The Human Aspect aims to integrate their resources into educational programs and community initiatives, ensuring a holistic approach to mental wellbeing.

Jimmy challenges us to rethink our connections and use the digital world to foster real human interactions. By daring to ask deeper questions, creating safe spaces, and being vulnerable, we can support each other better and move beyond our life challenges together.

Splash into Change: The Transformational Power of Swimming | Libby Alexander | Splash Foundation

Listen on Apple, Spotify or any of your favorite Podcast players.

#impact is happy to participate in this 3rd edition of Podcasthon! For one week, more than a thousand podcasts will highlight a charity of their choice. If you enjoy this episode, feel free to visit www.podcasthon.org to discover hundreds of other associations through the voices and talents of amazing podcasters!

In a world where over half the population does not know how to swim, access to swimming becomes a privilege, often unavailable to marginalized communities. The Splash Foundation, co-founded by Libby Alexander in Hong Kong, empowers and transforms communities through swimming. On the occasion of their 10th anniversary in 2025, let us dive into the incredible journey and impact of the Splash Foundation, as shared by Libby.

A Simple Idea, A Powerful Transformation

The Splash Foundation began with a simple yet transformative idea. Libby, along with Simon Holliday, set out to provide swimming lessons to those who wouldn’t typically have the opportunity, particularly migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong. Swimming, they discovered, was merely a vehicle for fostering confidence, community and change. As Libby notes, “Swimming is just the vehicle… it’s about all these other things that they were getting out of this transformational experience.”

Breaking Barriers, One Stroke at a Time

The statistics are staggering: two out of three women globally cannot swim, and swim literacy rates reveal a consistent lack of access worldwide. Addressing these disparities, Splash Foundation tackles barriers (both economic and cultural!)  by offering free swimming lessons. The joy and commitment witnessed in learners, eager to take on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, drive the Foundation’s mission. “It’s absolutely staggering the impact,” Libby emphasizes.

Building a Community of Changemakers

The uniqueness of the Splash Foundation lies in its community-driven model. Graduates, having overcome their fear of swimming, often become volunteer coaches themselves. Libby reflects fondly, “Watching our graduate coaches who learned how to swim with us and now teach others is just wonderful.” This cycle of empowerment not only sustains the organisation but magnifies its reach and impact.

Overcoming the Challenges of Growth

Like many nonprofits, Splash faces the constant challenge of securing funding and expanding its reach. Libby’s approach is clear: focus on measuring impact and remain steadfast in the organisation’s strategy. While the journey involves many “no’s” and challenges, Libby remains committed, explaining, “You have to be really clear on what your impact is. You’re not going to fit with everyone, and that’s okay.”

A Call to Action

Looking forward, the Splash Foundation aims to replicate its successful model globally, sharing resources and advising communities on setting up similar programs.

Your First Step to Make a Difference: Starting Your Volunteering Journey | Sanday Chongo KABANGE

Listen on Apple, Spotify or any of your favorite Podcast players.

In this inspiring episode, we’re honored to sit down with one of Hong Kong’s most dedicated volunteers, Sanday Chongo KABANGE. Over the past eight years, Sanday has immersed himself in a variety of causes, from environmental advocacy and homelessness to disability support and animal welfare..

Meet Sanday Chongo KABANGE

In this episode, Sanday shares his incredible journey of service, highlighting the meaningful work he’s done across numerous charities and organizations in his adopted city of Hong Kong. Sanday was the proud recipient of the 2023 AmCham Ira Dan Kaye Community Award and the Spirit of Community Award at the Spirit of Hong Kong Community Award 2023.We dive deep into Sanday’s volunteerism journey, tracing it back to his roots in Zambia and how his passion for youth engagement and community service followed him across continents.

The Transformative Power of Giving Back

His path is a testament to the transformative power of giving back, whether through corporate CSR programs or his own personal endeavors. Not only does Sanday tirelessly serve, but he also encourages others to join him, using social media as a platform to advocate for volunteerism and inspire change. One of the key insights Sanday shares is how he overcame the language barrier while volunteering with local communities in Hong Kong, where Cantonese is primarily spoken. His concept of “silent communication” — using body language, hand gestures, and a warm smile — has helped him connect deeply with those he serves, regardless of language differences. This unique approach has enabled Sanday to bridge cultural gaps and make a lasting impact.Throughout the conversation, Sanday gives a heartfelt shout-out to some of the many organizations he’s worked with, including HandsOn Hong Kong, ImpactHK, Plastic Free Seas, Feeding Hong Kong, WWF, Habitat for Humanity, and more. Each of these organizations plays a vital role in improving the lives of Hong Kong residents, and Sanday’s involvement has been nothing short of remarkable.Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or someone curious about getting involved, Sanday’s journey offers valuable insights and encouragement. He reminds us that you don’t have to be fluent in a language or tied to a single cause forever to make a difference. Sometimes, all it takes is a smile and the willingness to show up.

Key Takeaways:

* How Sanday’s volunteering journey started in Zambia and continued to flourish in Hong Kong.

* The concept of “silent communication” and how it breaks language barriers in volunteering.

* Insights on how to balance work, life, and community service and how you can get the best start as a new volunteer

* A rundown of Hong Kong-based organizations making a difference, and how you can get involved.

The Power of Leading with Your Voice | Global Leaders Summit

Listen on Apple, Spotify or any of your favorite Podcast players.

You know how I always encourage you to send in a voice note for the podcast? It’s because I truly believe in the power each of you holds with your unique voices.

A gift

Our voices – whether they are quiet, uncertain, reflective, or bold and loud – it doesn’t matter. I believe we all have important stories to tell, and valuable lessons to share, not just for others, but for ourselves as well.

I often revisit an episode I recorded for #impact years ago, where my younger self shares her perspective on the world. I love reflecting on that version of me. It’s like a precious gift.

And that has always been the intention of the podcast: to be a gift.

Not only for listeners who become engaged in it or feel inspired by the stories we share, as they learn about the big and small ways they can start making their own impact in their communities too – no matter where in the world they listen to it, no matter if they listen to it minutes after the episode goes live or several years later.

But I also understand this podcast as a gift to the guests and voices that have been featured on the podcast over the years.by now it must be several hundred, I have lost count!

Each voice, each person, and this precious moment in time, their thoughts, their wisdom – captured forever on the podcast. And making an impact for years (decades even!) to come.

People are still listening to episodes I recorded years ago. There isn’t a single month were each episode on #impact even the ones that aired 8 years ago doesn’t hit at least another listen, even the ones that aired 8 years ago.

It tells me this podcast’s impact is timeless—past, present, and future.

Just as I discussed in our recent #impact episode with Diana Wu David, which sparked such incredible feedback (thank you if you were one of the people reaching out to share how the episode made you rethink how you look at community building! My heart is so full!)

The episode you are about to hear is no different.

I know it will continue to inspire for years, decades even.

I’ll never forget walking through the majestic halls of Vienna City Hall, surrounded by the voices of a new kind of leadership at the Global Leaders Summit, initiated by the female factor (Huge shout out to co-founders Tanja Sternbauer and Mahdis Gharaei) — women who showed up and spoke up in this episode when I asked them:

How do YOU lead with your voice?

Without my podcast, I wouldn’t have had the courage to approach each of them. In that way,

Bridging Race and Disability in Advocacy | Erika L Watson | Intersection Collective

“A community means including the voices, including the experiences, including the wisdom of the very community that you are trying to be in service to.” Erika L Watson

Listen on Apple, Spotify or any of your favorite Podcast players.

Meet Erika Watson

Meet Erika L. Watson, founder and CEO of The Intersection Collective, a groundbreaking platform dedicated to advocating for and empowering individuals at the intersection of race and disability.Erika’s work is focusing on improving the lives of children of color with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families, and communities. She also supports executives on their journey to becoming more intentionally inclusive in their leadership.

Erika’s impressive resume includes serving on the Equitable Nutrition in Schools Advisory Council to First Lady Michelle Obama, contributing to the historic Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act of 2010. She also founded Dress for Success in Washington, D.C., a nonprofit that has empowered over 30,000 women, many of whom are disabled, BIPOC, formerly incarcerated, and possess intersecting identities, to build skills and secure meaningful career opportunities.

“Nothing about us without us”

Erika sheds light on her personal journey and the motivations behind her work. As a mother and caregiver for a parent with cognitive disabilities, she has firsthand experience of the challenges faced by those with disabilities. The Intersection Collective’s mantra, “Nothing about us without us,” highlights the importance of including voices from the disability community in advocacy and decision-making processes.

Emphasizing the need for intentional inclusivity

It’s a team effort. Sylvia Nyegenye (on the left) and Kelly Green(on the right) are part of the Intersection Collective team.

Erika shares her vision for The Intersection Collective, emphasizing the need for intentional inclusivity. She recounts the everyday struggles and triumphs of caring for her mother, revealing the systemic barriers that people with marginalized identities and with disabilities face. Through her work, Erika aims to bring purposefulness and intentionality to making the world more inclusive for people with intersectional identities.

Building the village

One of the key projects The Intersection Collective is currently working on is a pilot program called “The Village.” This initiative aims to empower parents of color with children with learning differences and disabilities to become more effective advocates for their children. By providing culturally responsive and inclusive advocacy training, The Village seeks to build a community network that amplifies voices and fosters equity in education.

Celebrating milestones

Erika emphasizes the importance of celebrating milestones, big and small, in the journey of social impact work. She shares personal anecdotes about the transformative power of recognizing and honoring achievements, no matter how minor they may seem. For Erika, celebrating milestones is crucial for maintaining motivation and sustaining the often challenging work of advocacy and leadership. She describes how acknowledging successes, such as completing a grant proposal or making strides in a pilot program,
