Guitarist Dren Mcdonald Podcast

Guitarist Dren Mcdonald Podcast. Longtime friends and musical collaborators, guitarist Dren McDonald and drummer Ken Hada, delve deep into the fascinating realms of the creative process, audio engineering, AI, and composition. With their combined decades of experience in the music industry, the duo brings a wealth of knowledge and insight to this engaging episode.

One of the key focal points of this podcast is the creative process. Drawing from their own experiences as professional musicians, Dren and Ken explore the intricacies of inspiration, how to overcome creative blocks, and the importance of fostering a nurturing environment for artistic growth. They delve into the often-misunderstood concept of “finding your voice” as a musician.

Moreover, Dren and Ken are fascinated by the intersection of music and technology, particularly the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI).

I hope this podcast will inspire and empower listeners to explore their own creative potential, embrace technological advancements, and continue pushing the boundaries of musical expression.

Suzanne Fossey Alternaive Photography podcast covers aspects of the alternative process. To start I was a fan of Suzzane’s work. In fact, I found her on Instagram @suzanne_fossey_art. While attending an alternative photography class at Cypress College, my professor Tony Maher assigned an artist essay. I immediately thought of Suzanne Fossey Alternative Photography. We had a talk on Zoom and it turned out so good I asked her if I could post it as a podcast. Lucky for me she agreed.

Skateboarder Photographer Lori Weinstein

Skateboarder Photographer Lori Weinstein lives in New York. To begin with I noticed Lori in a Zoom talk. In fact the Zoom talk was Jim Gray Skateboarding Cocktail Hour. Again it was during this conversation I realized Lori would make a good podcast. First Im always interested in skateboard scene outside of my own. Second, I was able to see some of her photography in the Zoom.

As can be heard in this podcast Lori Weinstein is a great photographer. And her love for skateboarding reads in every shot. She has some insightful things to say. I hope you enjoy skateboarder and photographer Lori Weinstein podcast.

Legendary Skateboarder Kim Cespedes

Legendary Skateboarder Kim Cespedes photo Lance Smith

Legendary Skateboarder Kim Cespedes podcast. A candid conversation with a pioneer in women’s skateboarding. For most skaters, Kim Cespedes was only an image in a magazine. During a very short time in skateboarding. Consequently, there is very little information about her career. However, everyone (from that time) seems to know her.

A famous photographer once told me that Kim was one of the best skaters. In fact, the top 3 skilled skateboarders. In other words, she skated at a high level. Yet she was probably thinking about surfing. Thus, just moments after her surf session this is skateboarder Kim Cespedes.

Skateboarder Artist Steve Olson

Skateboarder artist Steve Olson. Is someone I have always admired. In fact, for a time I rode his board at Skatopia.

Some 20 years later I shot a skate picture of Steve in Venice. And during that session, we might have said 5 words to each other. But more on that later.

Although my Steve Olson contact was short. I do remember one thing about Steve. And that is his presence. In the first place he is funny. And he is quick. In addition he is gone fast.

At the present time he still seems the same. He skates, surfs and makes art for a living.

As for Steve’s art. I remember seeing the painting he shared in this podcast. And I recall liking it. And the work was over my head. I couldn’t process it. Later after our conversation. I woke up and the first thing I thought of was his painting. Further, I didn’t have a precise remembrance of the art. More like residual feeling from it. Which has never happened to me?

Finally, I hope you enjoy this conversation. In fact our second talk. A podcast with skateboarder artist Steve Olson.

Skateboarder skatopian Matt Cook

skateboarder Matt Cook podcast

Skateboarder Skatopian Matt Cook, is an old friend of mine. In fact, I was a grom when we met. Amid the pace of a 1970’s skatepark we became friends. In fact, we spent everyday skating with our crew. During the days of Skatopia life moved fast.

All good things come to an end. In due time Matt was riding spots with “the cool crew”.

Then a lifetime went by. And as 40-year-olds we met again. And we were still skateboarders. Now Skateboarder Skatopian Matt Cook had become a great skater. On his journey, Matt rode for the Alva team. But he still had that killer style. The same style he had at Skatopia.

These days I see Matt once or twice a year. Because that’s what happens when you get old. Even so I still enjoy Matt’s company.

So lets catch up with my friend Matt Cook.

Printer photographer Michael martinez

Printer photographer Michael Martinez is the SEO title for this post. But it is hard to describe Michael in a title. Because his creativity seems too broad to categorize. For instance, he modifies old classic iPods. And I mean he tweaks those things! Michael adds Bluetooth and amplification. In fact, that subject alone could be another podcast. And that is why I wanted to have a conversation with Michael Martinez. He gets me thinking. And I hope this conversation does the same for you.

Stencil Artist Lawrence Limtao

Stencil artist Lawrence Limtao

Stencil artist Lawrence Limtao, makes mesmorizing things with cardboard and spray paint. In fact, he makes art at events all over California.

In the first place I met Lawrence at a skatepark. Adjacent to the 605 and 91 freeway is a little skateboardpark called Caruthers or Bellflower. I used to skate there many a morning with my old friends from Skatopia. Many older skaters choose the early morning session for its lack of crowds.

Eventually we got to know three skaters. And those skaters were Anthony, Allen , and Lawrence. We would ask them how they could be skating on a school day. And they told us that they were home-schooled.

Well, one of those kids turned out to be Lawrence from Spank. And his art can be found on skateboards all around the world. In fact if you attend a local skate event in Southern California, you are likely to run into Lawrence. Check out our conversation.

But we never really had the chance to speak at length. He agreed to do a podcast (back then) but time ran out and he was off to San Francisco Art Institute.

Next years went by and the Covid-19 virus forced the world to socialize via videoconference. Then I invite Frank to a group photographer chat on zoom. And I realized I’d still like to have a conversation with Frank Nunez.

Artist/skateboarding pioneer, Jana Payne-Booker

Artist Jana Payne-Booker

Artist/skateboarding pioneer, Jana Payne-Booker first pioneered women’s skateboarding during the 1970’s. And later worked in the Disney Imagineering department as an artist. Jana’s podcast covers, skateboarding, identity, art and recovery.

In fact, we conducted an audio conversation about 7 or 8 years ago for skatopia.net. And today she informed me of the importance of that previous interview. In fact, during our previous conversation, she decided to publicly talk about the negative aspects of being a female skateboarder. Negative aspects that included being molested by her skateboarding coach. And the journey she endured to find her way out of that place.

Finally, this might sound like a heavy story. And when you hear this conversation you might agree that Artist/skateboarding pioneer, Jana Payne-Booker holds nothing back. But it is also a story of finding one’s self. I hope you enjoy the second conversation I have had with the great Jana Payne-Booker.

technical note

The first 2 minutes or so of this podcast contains some silence. So in plain English, the record button was on and our computers were syncing up. And why not edit the silence out? The videoconference system compresses the video and audio so I don’t want to re-compressing the content.

Chris also talks about the danger and challenges of taking skateboard pictures during a pandemic. So how did this graphic designer get into skateboard photography? Well, give this podcast a listen.

And by the way, this the first podcast I have created since the outbreak of covid-19. In order to protect my family and Chris’s family I conducted this conversation via videoconferencing. So there is a video version of this podcast as well, which you can find under the audio podcast.
