How to Build a Nonprofit isn’t your typical “thought leader” podcast. It’s real talk with real people who’ve dared to start something meaningful—and managed to keep it going (most days). Each episode dives into the messy, inspiring, behind-the-scenes stories of nonprofit founders and builders. We talk about the stuff people don’t usually put on grant reports—burnout, bad board decisions, flopped fundraisers, surprising wins, and the little pivots that made a big difference. If you’re starting a nonprofit, scaling one, or just wondering if you’re the only one making it up as you go… you’re in the right place. This show is here to remind you: you’re not alone, you’re not crazy, and yes—this work is still worth doing.

Helping Women of Color Build a Law Career and Fight Injustice | Rachel Johnson-Farias - Esq. Apprentice

Rachel Johnson-Farias has dedicated her legal career to making the law more accessible to  low-income people and communities of color. Rachel graduated with honors from Occidental College and obtained a B.A. in Critical Theory and Social Justice. She went on to earn her Juris Doctor degree from U.C. Berkeley, School of Law.

But after finishing her law degree, she encountered major roadblocks at the final steps towards realizing her dream. And it was through these hardships that the idea for her organization was born. Esq. Apprentice is a non-profit that helps nontraditional law students of color become licensed attorneys.

In our interview, she speaks candidly about how the do-everything-for-everyone mindset can quickly lead to burnout, how to build sustainable practices as a leader, and why she believes her organization can help upend systemic injustice.

Esq. Apprentice seeks to change access to the legal profession in California and, eventually, the nation.

How to Build a Nonprofit
Africa's Youth Land Movement | Innocent Antoine HOUEDJI, Youth Initiative for Land in Africa

Meet the man who is leading Africa’s youth movement for land access.

Young people and women are often excluded from accessing land in Africa. This is a huge problem - and an opportunity - for its future, as 60% of Africa’s population is under the age of 25.

Innocent Antoine HOUEDJI attended a mega-conference about land in Africa in 2019, but saw barely any mention of youth. There, he explains, the idea for his organization was born, and his first organizational members were secured.

In this episode, he talks about the barriers youth and women face when it comes to accessing land in Africa, which relate to both economic, political, and traditional forms of land control. He also discusses the sacrifices he made in order to launch the organization with zero money, and the leadership tactics he has employed to manage rapid growth across - get this - 31 countries.

Ultimately, he found himself wanting to help others take the same steps as a part of his own recovery process. His organization would become a reputable program for helping people become safer and healthier in their relationships.

How to Build a Nonprofit
What About Your About Friends? | Chandler Hoffman, Tribe One

Episode 04: Chandler Hoffman Show Notes

Dr. Chandler Hoffman is new to the nonprofit game. As a psychologist, he’s spent over three decades helping families, children, and separating parents navigate the changes in their lives and find health and healing along the way. But he knows that difficult times such as these can’t be dealt with in isolation or through weekly appointments with a therapist alone. People need friends. Tribes. A sense of belonging and an interweb of relationships where they can find someone to laugh with, a shoulder to cry on, a healthy distraction, or just a really honest conversation.

That’s why he founded Tribe One to combat the loneliness epidemic in America by helping people form and strengthen meaningful connections.

In this episode, he shares with Jordan how he decided to start his organization, the challenges of the first year, and how he plans to grow it into a sustainable initiative in the future.

"From Financial Failure to Community Transformation | Patricia Ashanti, Delta Circles, Inc.

Patricia Ashanti has a vision that won't quit. After a financial mistake at McDonald's opened her eyes to the economic exploitation happening in her community, she spent over a decade building something powerful in the Arkansas Delta. In this episode, she talks about the car accident that changed everything, why she chose nonprofit over business, the compliance mistake that nearly shut her down, and the storytelling exercise that helped her finally see herself as the leader she'd always been.

On a Mission to Free My Sisters | Stacey Borden, New Beginnings Reentry Services

Stacey Borden has a lot to say. After years stuck in a cycle of addiction and incarceration as a result of unaddressed childhood trauma, she’s making up for lost time.
