PART II: INATTENTIONAL BLINDNESS: Is that an Invisible Gorilla, or are you just happy to see me?
Part 2 of our episode EXPOSING the invisible gorilla theory, and now that we have broken it, no more research will be able to be conducted because of "demand characteristics" or something. Because we are just such a big huge podcast that every single person in the world will become academically compromised after listening to our episode. Thoughts and prayers. Did you know that there are invisible gorillas all around us? They are the ones that steal our socks and hearts and make us stay in love with our exes longer than the norm. They are also the ones that post the misinformation online the first time and don’t cite their sources.  Darn you invisible gorillas Inattentional blindness is the reason that these gorillas get by scot free, they are the reason you didn’t see the cyclist in your blind spot and why when looking for your keys you literally miss your keys. It is the  function of our attention being so invested that we have no more attentional capacity to see anything else, especially things that we are not expecting to see. This episode we look into the research post invisible gorilla experiment so if you missed it listen to that one first! It is the  function of our attention being so invested that we have no more attentional capacity to see anything else, especially things that we are not expecting to see. If Elon Musk was to come on stage and do a dance at a Taylor Swift concert I genuinely think I would miss it because of the attention to the girl of the moment, and this happens to us during less exciting parts of our lives as well, the less exciting parts being the experiments undertaken to explain this phenomenon, but the results are exciting and thereby the ep is exciting. Listen to the ep now and you will win 1 intelligence point and 1 charisma for having a cool study to discuss with your friends at the dinner parties. ALLERGIES PART II: Nut Free Zone? I sure hope it does
Part 2 of my rant/ hyper fixation on my favourite topic of science, and that is Allergies!   Our seemingly failing immune response, could it really be a way to protect us against worms, toxins, fungi? Or is it an emerging response to the world of hyper hygiene and eating less dirt?   Unforch I yapped too long and there is a part 1 that you may have missed that came out last week! To get some much needed context on what an allergy response is and why we have them at all, to whether or not they were developed as an evolutionary advantage (the jury is still out IMO), we also discussed a few (probably too many) hypothesises, and relevant studies to support the ever expanding field of research (because we keep on getting more allergic!).   This episode we delve a bit deeper into why we have more allergies now and what the research says! More hypothesises are spilled, we thoroughly dissect the microbiome and the potential ramification of over prescription of antibiotics on not only antibiotic resistance and microbiome changes, but on allergies as well! We look at ways that allergens can sneak into the dms (blood stream) and cause emotional damage (sensitization) and even the need for therapy (allergy).   Anyway enjoy our natterings about allergies and hopefully one day we can figure out how to de sensitize (I've tried emotionally and the outlook is grim)…   If you liked this episode please let us know and give us a sneaky follow on the socials: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hotsciencepod/ Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@hot.science.pod   And references (wayy to many and so many were cut :() https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BUKik2xNC9ybSUuI0rIyiU5xq_jg6WycaTmj2yEwJFA/edit?usp=sharing

Are you excited cause I'm excited? Why am I so excited I hear you ask? Because we get to talk about one of my favourite science topics and that is ALLERGIES! A good 80min header that I wish we could post all at once but I don’t even think my mum is listening to all that in one go (love you Michelle xx). She is honestly probably our no 1 fan as well though.  Anyway enjoy our natterings about allergies and hopefully one day we can figure out how to de sensitize (I've tried emotionally and the outlook is grim....) MYOPIA vs INTELLIGENCE PART II: The only important chicken vs egg story
Part 2 of our discussion of myopia and intelligence!   The origins of life and love and sight and who we are, all questions we have had about the universe. Well today we answer the one question we all had once and didn’t dwell on (but we did), and that is the contentious link between myopia (short sightedness) and intelligence.   The sound recording is unfortunately less than optimal because the individual tracks were lost (sabotage for being too hot by the universe I'm sure) so we have tried to do the best we can with the audio from literally the phone recording. So please be nice, we tried our best and that’s literally all you can ask of us.   Anyway enjoy our chats on whether the length of your eyeball impacts how smart you are, and how complex and nuance conversations on intelligence are to even have at all.   References below if you too have myopia and at least an inflated sense of intelligence (yes that’s tongue in cheek) https://docs.google.com/document/d/17cu5qyWF67Bfh0-kh5mbjjB4Af812mQgBktkuDgq6og/edit?usp=sharing

TATTOOS PART II: Ink your skin with Hot Science to win BIG
Welcome to the second part of the tattoo ep! If you are new here please kindly listen to the first one to get an 'ink'ling of what's in that dye, and how tattoos even stay in our skin!   Too tattoo or not too tattoo that is indeed the question that we intend to answer in this weeks episode of Hot Science!   What is a tattoo, what is in the dye, how does it stay in our skin and are there any potential repercussions that could mean we are up stream with only the image of a paddle to get us out.   We talk a whole lot and were way too jovial for it to be considered rigorous academic debate, so instead we are calling it a rigorous stick and poke the science around with a very small stick attached to a needle.   Personally enjoyed editing this episode as much as I did recording it, and you will notice the most abhorrent additions of random guitar to spice it up. If you hate it, keep it to yourself and send me a bunch of flowers to get the message out there, but if you loved it please tattoo the episode link onto your forearm to show you’re a real fan, or if that level of commitment is testing the inner playboy in you just rate and review (5 stars only…).   Enjoy and stay hot (and tatted) science.   To make sure our sources are up to "scratch" https://docs.google.com/document/d/1J_9wcd7fcVP_zBwK1uo5wrCQb7sMFGfPKPbRZVF6wWc/edit?usp=sharing

BOREDOM PART II: Mum said that if you're bored, you have to listen to our episode
PART 2 on our discussion of boredom!   Boredom boredom boredom, listening to Tyler the Creator while watching Netflix, while doing a puzzle, while painting your toenails- we've all been there. And quite frankly some of you are probably right there now, and to let you in on a little secret, I painted my toes too while editing this ep xx.   Is boredom something that we should be villainising, or is it just a little warning signal from our body to re-prioritise our attention and our meaning?   Todays episode is a little more 'woo woo'  and by woo woo I mean based in the science of psychology which relies on slightly more interpretable data aka that being peoples opinions, perceptions, interactions. This doesn’t make it any less rooted in fact or in science, and in fact it probably is more robust because of the scrutiny that this type of science is often subjected to.   Please enjoy our discussions and philosophising and let us know if you too think that boredom is a natural, and while maybe not celebrated, a more neutral emotion than everyone would lead us to believe. And maybe If we allowed ourselves to fully feel bored we would gain monumental insight into our own motivations and desires and this could lead us towards a more meaningful and intention life. But who knows that’s just my hypothesis on the matter...   Stay hot science xx   References for this episode: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GvV8QznnZs2FnIw77h0wQ2LixkIXxZiGUcoxmvX52j8/edit?usp=sharing

ISOTRETINOIN PART II: Let me Accutane you
TRIGGER WARNING: we discuss depression and suicide in this episode (from a statistically and analytical perspective) If this raises issues with you please reach out to Lifeline 13 11 14. Our second instalment of the isotretinoin (accutane) episode! Here we discuss the potential ramifications of going on accutane and dive into the strength of the mental health claims associated.   It feels rather like a chicken or the egg situation whereby acne causes mental health issues, making it very hard to establish cause, but you'll have to listen to hear our deeper analysis.   Remember we need to be checking our cognitive bias babes before researching. This is especially needed when researching a topic that we feel a strong emotional connection to. We are prone to place more value on sources that affirm what we already believe and less on those we see as incorrect, but we need to strive to come from a place of curiosity, to learn and to understand rather than to pedestal or to villainise.   Anyway stay hot science xx   Instagram: hotsciencepod Tiktok: hot.science.pod   References below! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VwH1--EKiydBPUpBUuOKNuhDlPy6JV_qg_yV5pyB9Nc/edit?usp=sharing

RETINOL PART II: The Art of knowing what you are putting on your skin
For the second part of our Retinol episode, we bring you what does retinol actually do to our skin and how can we discern good and troublesome information about skincare.   We bring you the first segment of "check your cognitive bias babe" which helps break down the first few google search results when conducting your own research so you can be both informed (hot) and avoid potential fear mongering traps (even hotter)!   Remember that to conduct your own research you need the adequate skills to ensure the information you are absorbing is correct, useful and not misleading!   But I trust y'all and hopefully you trust us, to help present you with the facts and help warn you from the scary people trying to sell you things (things you probably don’t need…).   Please let us know if you enjoyed the ep and wow maybe give us a five stars to help me live my dream of never working for someone else and getting to be a hot science hermit everyday !   Being informed is so hot and so is science so stay hot xx   A la referencé: https://docs.google.com/document/d/194_eufkI2uLzsgogUbSU2-QzvKyGDDijtJaFoujdF2s/edit?usp=sharing

RETINOL PART 1: The art of knowing what you are putting on your skin
For the third episode of "What you don’t know might kill you" we bring you the fixation of any tiktok skin care girly: RETINOL.   The skin care product taking the world by a storm for its potent anti aging effects; we uncover in this preliminary episode (because we yapped too hard and had to split it in half) what is retinol, where does it come from, and what are we trying to fix by using it. We talk about the affects of aging on our skin and what causes it.   You'll have to tune in next week for the second half where we discuss what retinol actually does, and how to analyse different types of media that are often trying to sell us something and how you can be an informed consumer making smart (and hot) decisions about your own body and the products you use.   And if you like us please give us a lil follow here and rate us five stars so I can tell my mum I'm going to make it as a podcaster.   References for your hot fact check perusal: https://docs.google.com/document/d/194_eufkI2uLzsgogUbSU2-QzvKyGDDijtJaFoujdF2s/edit?usp=sharing

From Taking Dye a Little Too Literally: A History of Food Colourants
A little bonus instalment of 'What you Don't Know Might Kill You' using all the unused research uncovered for the last episode. Since no knowledge acquired is wasted, I am making it available to clutter your brain space as well! Loz is currently soaking up the very last of summer (?) in Fiji, so this is a solo episode to ensure our hot scientists are getting their fortnightly dose of us! Unfortunately the sound quality this week is a little lower than normal because while Melbourne provides beautiful sites, sound proof solo work spaces are few and far between. I hope that you can endure the poorer quality as i had to while editing, and can forgive us for it. We will be back as scheduled together next week so if you are missing Loz's input you wont have to wait too much longer!
