History Heard Here Season 5 - Episode 9: The Past, the Present, and the Future

This week, Rachel discusses the early 2000s, the 2010s, the present, and the future on the last episode of History Heard Here. We'll talk about some hopeful things like more elections around the world, a rover with a cute nickname, water being discovered on Mars, and the inevitable end of the universe as we know it. Our relationship with religion changes as the world becomes more secular due to more bad things happening or at least we're seeing them all due to the Internet. There are still revolutions, mainly in the Middle East, as education becomes an important issue and the question of will humanity ever learn its lesson, continues to be unanswered.

History Heard Here Season 5 - Episode 8: Take a Chill Pill!

This week, Rachel discusses the 1990s as countries that were part of the USSR gain independence and the Internet is in full swing. You'll learn that we still don't know which wave of feminism we're in, how Latin and South America are actually more feminist, and that the Spice Girls should never be undermined. New technology is created as the biggest websites of today are created while we talk about the most important parts of this decade: Pokemon and Titantic and we head into the 21st century.

History Heard Here
History Heard Here Season 5 - Episode 7: Totally Tubular

This week, Rachel discusses the 1980s as the Cold War finally comes to an end with no one even winning. Eastern European countries are finally free (as well as Canada but that's unrelated) as most people agree that there was no point for the war in general. We talk about Reagan's presidency which is filled with assassination attempts, strikes concerning underrated people, and the economy continuing to not make anything better. Natural disasters happen but the world generally cares more about the newest Nintendo game, MTV, and how gorgeous Rob Lowe is.

History Heard Here
History Heard Here Season 5 - Episode 6: What’s the Skinny?

This week, Rachel discusses the 1970s and how it's worse than we remember as phrases have dark origins and something dark in the universe is discovered. The Vietnam war ends and violence increase in the Middle East and you'll learn that cults are not the solution to that. Oil becomes an issue as people start to care about the planet and we realize that we might be the problem. Other problems are presidents turning out not to be good and French being controversial. But at least Queen exists.

History Heard Here
History Heard Here Season 5 - Episode 5: What a Bummer
This week, Rachel discusses the 1960s and how Cuba cannot catch a break. People learn about the Vietnam War and then suddenly change their minds and the Bay of Pigs earns it spot in top 10 of history’s disasters. Camelot rises and falls with the JFK administration as people go against the grain in all aspects of life through the Chicano Movement, feminism, and Motown. History Heard Here
History Heard Here Season 5 - Episode 4: Crusin' for a Brusin'

This week, Rachel discusses the 1950s and why they might be overrated since apparently even after a world war, people still don't want peace. Wars that don't really seem to end are started and the US and the USSR use them as an excuse to fight against each other and since they can't get enough of each other they take it out of this world. Pop culture explodes as movie stars somehow become more famous, rock-and-roll comes to the mainstream, even more, countries become independent, and an assassination attempt happens that no one talks about. Germany is divided as parts of it own up and others completely ignore their past while the idea that teens are people too is finally being listened to.

History Heard Here Season 5 - Episode 3: Only Thing to Fear is Fear Itself

*Content Warning: The Holocaust is talked about during this episode and so matters related to that and anti-semitism will be mentioned. If you'd like to skip past that, visit the show notes on the website to see when to skip to.

This week, Rachel discusses the Holocaust and the immediate aftermath of World War 2 as this episode will definitely go up in the top ten of least fun episodes list. You will learn though how dumb the origins of association that pink is for girls and blue is for boys, the fact that people don't really like it when you don't trust them, and why continuing to talk about the Holocaust is still so important.

History Heard Here Season 5 - Episode 2: Loose Lips Might Sink Ships

This week, Rachel discusses World War 2 from start to finish which unlike World War 1, seems much more worldly with battles happening across Europe, Africa, and the Pacific. Poland slowly becomes not-Poland as Germany and the Soviet Union take parts of it and you'll learn that if you invade a place, most people don't want you in their club that promotes peace. America joins the fight after Japan makes a splash and it leads to the US being very busy for the next 4 years and changing from "neutral" to "definitely not neutral". New powers come in place and we'll talk about how the world tries to return to normal

History Heard Here
History Heard Here Season 5 - Episode 1: (Market) Crash and Burn

This week, Rachel discusses the 1920s, 30s, and the lead-up to World War 2 with a decade that seems great and another that doesn't. In the 1920s we see how people have reacted and recovered from World War 1 by being pretty modern like getting really into music, cutting their hair, and buy a lot of stuff. In the background, dictators around the world start to rise as more countries become independent. The decade ends with a crash as the Great Depression sends a ripple effect around the world and we are firmly in the 30s. Governments try to fix and create new problems as some in Europe start to not serve the people. People are still killing important people after Franz Ferdinand and the Olympics is probably the event no one was looking forward to. We'll also hear some of the best and worst nicknames for each decade and people continue to write depressing poetry.

History Heard Here Season 4 - Episode 9: No Man's Land

This week on the Season 4 finale, Rachel discusses the Great War AKA World War 1 as we dive into Europe to see what's going on in both the Western and Eastern fronts to show that amidst the war, people were still nice to each other and the teams constantly changed. Also talked about are some of the main battles from the war as we finally wrap up what happened to Russia and the Ottoman empire and how technology created the first modern war. Once the war was over, everything had changed, as the peace treaty didn't really do its job correctly, setting up the next world war and the causes of it.

History Heard Here Season 4 - Episode 8: The War to (Not) End All Wars
*Correction - Bosnia and Serbia are still countries, I just got ahead of myself and was thinking of Czechoslovakia (which does not exist and is now Slovakia and the Czech Republic). This week, Rachel discusses the rise of imperialism and the catalyst of World War One as everyone turns to Africa to make genetic and geography much harder just because of some shiny rocks. Back in Europe, everyone gets a little competitive and starts to make teams and choose sides, teaching you the lesson that if you’re going to declare war, might as well do it loudly. History Heard Here Season 4 - Episode 7: Open Doors and Open Arms

This week, Rachel discusses the fall of the shogunate AKA the Tokugawa Period as Japan continues to have an emperor (and still does) but decides to give constitutions a try. Also discussed is the start of the fall of the Ottoman empire and we inch closer and closer to WW1 and the 20th century. Japan tries to play nice with others and then decides that it doesn’t want to and instead wants to become a well-oiled machine whereas in the Ottoman empire, they are having a little bit of a loyalty issue. History Heard Here Season 4 - Episode 6: Death of the Dynasties
This week, Rachel discusses the fall of the Russian empire as well as the fall of the Qing Dynasty and the Chinese dynastic cycle. Corruption is a big theme this week as the only thing that stops the Qing empress from ruling is her death and the Russian people turned against the government and each other. We also talk about the Opium Wars which will continue to push the message of why you don’t do drugs because it could destroy the economy and get one man very angry. As we get closer to the 20th century, the world becomes more unstable and chaotic with old empires finally collapsing. History Heard Here Season 4 - Episode 5: I’ve Been Working on the Railroad
This week, Rachel discusses the Western Hemisphere once again as we catch up with Canada, the US and Latin and South America now that they’re industrialized which seems to be making everything worse. Tensions are high in Canada, slavery is a hot topic in America and there are way too cowboys in Argentina. People don’t realize that they are in for a surprise in these countries as they migrate from Europe where they realize that industrialization isn’t making life better over there either. History Heard Here Season 4 - Episode 4: Keep Up With the Times
This week, Rachel discusses a bunch of random topics as we go from the Russian empire to the rise of nationalism to the start of the Industrial Revolution. In Russia, they continue to prove that the 70s is the best decade (at least when it comes to the 1870s) and that folklore has the power to start revolutions and create new countries. As people come together and rise up, movements are created from other movements and we discuss how society is forever changed when Britain decided to somehow be both very environmentally friendly and also not. History Heard Here Season 4 - Episode 3: July: The Month of Revolutions

This week, Rachel discusses both the Napoleonic era and the July Revolution to show you that both good and bad things come in small packages. Also in this episode is some good traveling advice on why winter in Russia is never a fun time, and also if people are upset at you, you should probably stop doing the things that are upsetting them and that even in male-dominated places and times, women were always making history.

History Heard Here Season 4 - Episode 2: Beggars Can't Be Choosers
*There will be no more Myth Moment from this episode onward* This week, Rachel discusses both the American and French Revolutions and we learn that in the 1700s no one was happy with their monarch and that people have always been cheapskates. You will also hear in this episode how a snowball fight turned deadly but also makes for some great propaganda and that if you're going to be rebellious make sure to still be a nice person and that if you break something, you fix it. Finally, you'll learn that even the founding fathers weren't very good at their job and that while France had a revolution, nothing super revolutionary changed. History Heard Here Season 4 - Episode 1: Oh, How the Tables Have Turned
This week, Rachel kicks Season 4 off by finally confronting what she's been avoiding since the beginning of the podcast: American History. We discuss life in British colonies and the French and Indian War which would win a prize for the most confusing name except that its other name, isn't even remotely correct. For our myth moment, a new contender can join your list of famous people to have dinner with as he would fit right in with the 21st century with a chill attitude and pro-vegetarian lifestyle.  Leave a review on Spotify, Apple Podcast, or wherever you listen to podcasts to help spread the word! History Heard Here

Take a trip in time to get a closer look, from the Big Bang, the pyramids, world worlds, and everything in between. It’s like your world history class but shorter, simpler, and a whole lot stranger. On History Heard Here, you’ll hear how empires have risen and fallen with cultures being crushed out and lost forever as you finally get the full picture of just how insane and humane, history really is.
