Historias Unknown
A Flower Traveled in my Blood with Haley Cohen Gilliland
In the early hours of March 24, 1976, the streets of Buenos Aires rumble with tanks as soldiers seize the presidential palace and topple Argentina’s leader. The country is now under the control of a military junta, with army chief Jorge Rafael Videla at the helm. With quiet support from the United States and tacit approval from much of Argentina’s people, who are tired of constant bombings and gunfights, the junta swiftly launches the National Reorganization Process or El Proceso—a bland name masking their ruthless campaign to crush the political left and instill the country with “Western, Christian” values. The junta holds power until 1983 and decimates a generation. One of the military’s most diabolical acts is kidnapping hundreds of pregnant women. After giving birth in captivity, the women are “disappeared,” and their babies secretly given to other families—many of them headed by police or military officers.

For mothers of pregnant daughters and daughters-in-law, the source of their grief is twofold—the disappearances of their children, and the theft of their grandchildren. A group of fierce grandmothers forms the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, dedicated to finding the stolen infants and seeking justice from a nation that betrayed them. At a time when speaking out could mean death, the Abuelas confront military officers and launch protests to reach international diplomats and journalists.

They become detectives, adopting disguises to observe suspected grandchildren, and even work alongside a renowned American scientist to pioneer groundbreaking genetic tests. A Flower Traveled in My Blood is the rarest of nonfiction that reads like a novel and puts your heart in your throat. It is the product of years of extensive archival research and meticulous, original reporting. It marks the arrival of a blazing new talent in narrative journalism. In these pages, a regime tries to terrorize a country, but love prevails. The grandmothers’ stunning stories reveal new truths about memory, identity, and family.

A Brief History of Los Chicago Boys in Chile (and Latin America)
On September 11, 1973, a coup overthrew the democratically elected Chilean president, Salvador Allende. This marked the beginning of the Pinochet dictatorship and up to that date, Los Chicago Boys wrote out the 500 page plan that became known as the brick. The economic plan for the new regime. Then throughout the dictatorship, Pinochet elevated Chicago boys to higher positons. But who were they, how did it start? In this episode, Cristina tells Carmen about the Chicago Boys, the School of Chicago and their ties to right wing dictatorships in Latin America.

Historias Unknown
Chico Cano
Before company B of the Texas Rangers executed 15 Mexican men and boys in Porvenir, Texas, they asked each one, “are you Chico Cano?”. But who was Chico Cano? It depends who you ask. If you ask the Texas rangers, he was a deranged Mexican bandit, who led a band of 100 Mexicans and stole cattle and killed indiscriminately along the US-Mexico border. But the truth is more complicated than that. In this episode, Cristina tells Carmen about Chico Cano.

Historias Unknown
The National Synarchist Union
The National Synarchist Union was a fascist organization in Mexico, and was most popular from 1940 to around 1943. It sought the unity of the Catholic church and government, and for the church to rule; although it never gained much power, its beliefs and goals are comparable to Christian nationalism in the US, which we are seeing fighting for control of the US.

In this episode, Carmen tells Cristina about this brief organization in Mexico.

Historias Unknown
the Porvenir Massacre
On January 28, 1918, Company B of the Texas Rangers along with 4 local ranchmen and a US armny unit descended into the small town of Porvenir, Texas. They woke up the 140 residents and separated the men and boys from the women, younger children and elderly, then proceeded to gun down the able bodied men and boys over 14. This is known today as the Porvenir Massacre and took place during the ten year period called the Hour of Blood or La Matanza.

This is a very heavy episode, listen with caution.

Historias Unknown
La Matanza, the Hour of Blood: the Lynching of Two Teens in Texas
The years from 1910 to 1920 are known as La Matanza (the massacre) or La Hora de Sangre (the hour of blood). This violence was committed by state police, vigilantes and military, including the Texas rangers, whose violence was worse during 1915 to 1919. Estimates of the number of dead Mexicans from these years range from 300 to 5000, but it’s not exact because so many murders went unreported.

In this episode, Cristina talks about the lynching of two teens in Texas during La Matanza. The lynching of 14 year old Antonio Gomez and 15 year old Leon Martinez.

This is a very heavy episode, listen with caution.

Historias Unknown
The Hour of Blood, La Matanza and the Lynching of Antonio Rodriguez
The years from 1910 to 1920 were brutal, and are known by a couple names, La Matanza (the massacre) or La Hora de Sangre (the hour of blood). This violence was committed by state police, vigilantes and military, including the Texas rangers, whose violence was worse during 1915 to 1919. Estimates of the number of dead Mexicans from these years range from 300 to 5000, but it’s not exact because so many murders went unreported.

The lynching of Antonio Rodriguez is considered the first during this deadly 10 year period.
