Join Emily and Ashley as this weeks guest Ian Patt talks them through how to write a song. Ian talks about what has inspired his songwriting in the past, and gives the hosts tips on how to write a song of their own. Then, Ashley and Emily listen to Tear Drops on My Guitar and Right Where You Left Me by Taylor Swift a bunch to inspire a song of their own which Ian even produces a taste of and you can find it in the episode! Ashley and Emily wrap up the episode by talking about their songwriting process, and how they came to Cloudy Day, Hears the Things debut single. Thanks for listening, and Happy 50th episode!! We will see you soon after a few weeks break!
This week on HTT we have a special guest! He is a husband, card dealer, poker expert, father and tax preparer of/for Emily- it's Roy Patt! Roy tells all the insider info that we sort of know- gambling is a losing bet and the house always wins (kind of). We talk about how to play blackjack, Roy's Christmas presents (all poker books), the type of person who does the best in casinos, and what it feels like to win and lose (it's not good, either way).
Thanks friends! Let us know if you have had any big wins or life-shattering losses and leave a review on Apple Podcasts or wherever else you listen to pods!
This week on Hears the Thing Joel Sigrist talks us through Getting a Job for the First Time. Joel has created a course on How to Find a Job in 4 Weeks, and in putting this course together, he has done a lot of research into what recruiters are looking for when hiring potential candidates, which a lot of which he shares with us in the hour we had him on. Joel, Ashley and Emily have all gotten their first “adult” job in the last few months, and so we talk about that a bit in keeping with the theme of the podcast for doing this for the first time. Again, Joel is very knowledgeable and full of tips to think about when it comes to finding a job fit for you, how to apply, what to make of your resume and LinkdIn, how take on interviews and more! If you already have a job, still give it a listen to hear what the kids are saying these days, and for insight on what newcomers to your work might be going through before they secure a position. You can find Joels course titled “How to Find a Job in 4 Weeks” at https://gumroad.com/l/howtogetajob AND you can use discount code HTT to get $10 off the code. This week on the p'dcast, we have long-time friend of the pod, Catherine Romanaggi, on to "see" or more aptly, hear, a psychic. We used Psychic Source to connect with our psychic, Hope! Catherine had her aura read, her tarot cards interpreted and got a connection with someone's grandma. Join us to hear about our takes on the spiritual realm, our beliefs in psychics, and to hear about what Catherine's future holds.
Cheers friends! Let us know if you have had any psychic encounters and leave a review on Apple Podcasts or wherever else you listen to pods!
Welcome to our guest and Dungeon Master Sara Kim as she joins the pod to discuss Emily and Ashleys first time playing dungeons and dragons with her as the dm. She also explains the game, the merits of spending time with your friends, a bit on how she writes a campaign, and more! If you are interested in DND podcasts or other role playing games, the HTT hosts can not recommend the Goosebuds RPG episodes (cerca episodes 71-74), Pretend Friends, and Not Another DND Podcast highly enough, links for those shows below. We hope this maybe inspires you to start a campaign with your friends, if not shine a little light on what DnD is for you if you were not sure before. Thanks for listening!

Join us this week as Hears the Thing tries Geocaching for the first time with our guest and friend of the pod, Courtney Vijil. What is geocaching? Is it just pushing around trash with your toe and finding moldy oranges, or is there more to it? Listen to learn about this very fun and COVID safe activity to do with you and your friends!
Hello friends! On this weeks episode of Hears the Thing, Emily and Ashley are joined by double the friends, as we tag team learn how to drive with two fantastic and patient teachers- Jema (of Season 3, Episode 25 fame) and Sebastian (who you've all met in Season 1, Episode 8). In this episode, we talk about our first time trying to learn to drive stick, mishaps in the Rivas parking lot, and get this pedagogy. Thanks for listening to this week's episode and don't forget to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts if you love us as much as we do.
If you are like Emily, you probably thought that non-professionals giving each other tattoos was something that only happened in the movies. Today, friend of the Pod, Sasha Leamy, proves that wrong, as she gave Ashley her first tattoo. Thanks for being on and sharing your expertise with us Sasha!
Join us and our guest Cara Nixon, author of Trust me?, Runaway Esme, and Good Souls Under the Oak Tree which has been viewed on Wattpad over 20,000 times, on a writing journey! We ask the expert about the inspiration for her WattPad books she wrote as an 11 year old, and feel out what we would want our own short story to look like. She then walks us through her writing process, gives advice to any aspiring authors, and is incredibly helpful. THEN Ashley and Emily co write their own Wattpad style short story about a beach town summer love where the girl falls for the bad boy for themselves. They learned a lot about themselves on the way. You can read the short story on our blog if you wish! And please leave us a review on iTunes to check in.

Happy One Year Anniversary to Hears the Thing! Thank you to everyone!!!
Hey friends! Can you believe that one year ago today we posted our first episode! The thought of Hears the Thing has been around for much longer, but it's been so sweet to have a product, a real, existing thing- FOR A WHOLE ROTATION AROUND THE SUN- and I know that time is a construct and yada yada, but it really is just so sweet! Thank you for listening to us, supporting us, and encouraging us for so long. We love you and hope that this episode brings a smile to your face. Remember to reach out, say hello, and that we are only a phone call away. Again, thank you to all of our friends and family to contributed their time and voices to make this season happen, and for giving us voices!
We hope to see you soon, send us any fun ideas on @hearsthethingpod on instagram or at hearsthethingpod@gmail.com, keep in touch with your loved ones, leave a review on podcasts, and thanks for listening!
Ever grateful,
Ashley and Emily
This week, we have a special guest and co-host Emily Jo Henry Patt, reporting for her duty of serving up some real discomfort. We talk about emotional stunting at 14, commitment (a classic), and Kit's hypothesis of how getting into romance too late in the game has made us the ultimate late bloomers. We also talk about how her personality and preferences have really made this season that we call qUarAntiNe, a very enjoyable one and on the topic of if her friends jumped off a bridge, how she would (and did) too.
Thanks for listening and tune in next week for our season finale!
This whole season we have been learning about what makes our friends uncomfortable and now we hear what makes SUPER host Ashley uncomfortable. This includes confrontation, naming all the boys she’s been entangled with before, and her decision making/commitment complex . Emily keeps her exclamations about the new T Swift album to a mere two minutes, but please send her a text if you have thoughts on Folklore, it is all she is thinking about right now so she would love.
Hi friends, hope you are doing well! This week on the podcast, we had on friend, roommate, and cousin of Emily, Kit Van Roekel. This week, Kit talks about trashy TV, regretable quarantine texting exes, the Department of Human Services, white privilege and so much more! Leave a review on how we can get Emily and Kit to become sisters in a legal and non-disgusting way. Thanks for listening friends, stay safe, and we'll talk to you soon!
This week, we have the OG, Coach Phaly, on the pod. Duece gave us the original idea of doing this season of the podcast to interact and stay in touch with our loved ones and their lives during this wild and unpredictable season of life. We talk about life, work, and love. It's the classic trifecta. Listen to hear more about family, raising siblings, getting set up on dates, and more!
Thanks for listening! You can find us on instagram @hearsthethingpod- and we would love it if you left a review wherever you listen (except Spotify, because I guess they don't do that). Stay safe and thanks for tuning in friends!
So. We live in a society. This week with Luke Mitchell-Nelson, Ashley's first friend in college, we talk about the construct of marriage, our 1 year and five month old niece and nephews, and the way Luke has been navigating gender roles and expectations over his life. Kind of funny listening to some 21/22 year olds discuss marriage, but we do it anyways. Can you make yourself love someone? Do arranged marriages work? At what point is commitment worth it? sigh. Thank you Luke for being on with us and talking through it with us. We hope everyone is well and, as always, thanks for listening!
We talk about all of our favorite things with Cara this week- Timothee Chalamet, school bus memories, and astrology, plus more, all on the day after she turned 20! In a very typical turn of events, Cara starts by saying that not much makes her uncomfortable, and then ends realizing that most things make her uncomfortable. We loved chatting with a non-stem friend this week, and it was great to hear about her job being a journalist for the Corvallis Advocate during the pAnDeMiC. This show truly had lots of laughs, and we hope it brings a smile to your face! Leave a review if you knew what Ashleys astrological sign was before she revealed it, and **** happy Cancer szn everyone ****
Hey friends! Happy official summer for all of our trimester friends! Would you believe that you can listen to two people with degrees talking at you this week?? (We didn't have them at the time of recording so don't expect us to sound smarter yet or anything). Special guest and friend, Sara Kim, joins us this week to talk about dealing with anxiety a family that stigmatizes mental health, the struggle of not being on neutral ground, and being overwhelmed by media.
We recognize and detest the injustice that we see on the basis of skin color. As a podcast and as humans, we stand with our peers and BIPOC communities in these days when human rights continue to be violated daily.
Sara Kim has compiled a list of resources for BIPOC and those who may benefit from it, as well as insider tips on how to be an effective ally. We love and hope that you are safe.

Campaign Zero is an organization that is working to end police violence in 10 different areas. While Oregon and the US have worked to pass a few laws on this issue, it's still not enough.
The People of Color Caucus is currently working on a few police accountability measures to pass in Oregon.
Here are a few effective ways you can communicate with your legislator, council member, or local government official -
We talk the film industry, from missing going to the movies, to awards season, to cgi-omg masks off of all actors in 2020 filming to bring back production. When quarantine lifts, go support your local movie theatre and see a movie- for Wyatts sake and also for the sake of our culture and our community! Pregnancy and feeling academically inferior makes Wyatt uncomfortable, so listen to hear him squirm talking about it. Thank you Wyatt for recording us this week, and in big news congratulations Ashley! She took her last class of undergrad this week, and is graduating!! We (me, Emily) are proud of you. Thanks everyone for listening, and stay safe!
