Reformation Day - Pages Divine

"Pages Divine"
Written: October 31st, Monday, 2022
By: Matthew Krogstad

Inscribed within the Pages Divine,
speaks of One who was before all time.
O, the perfect word of grace,
is the place where Christ, I'll chase.

See this book take its mighty stand,
whilst every line has greatly fanned.
A flame that burned the hearts of man,
a deep so vast no mind can scan.

Follow its path to the endless fount,
the glory Moses sought on the mount.
Uncovered inside all its pages,
revealed is Him who paid sins wages,

Led by the Holy Spirit I'll see,
all about Jesus who is the Key.
Unlocking the most valuable treasure,
a height of beauty no one can measure.

Psalm 10

A poem inspired by Psalm 10 in light of the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
Written: September 11th, Thursday, 2025
Song: Psalm 10 by Poor Bishop Hooper (used with permission)

Why stand, O Lord, afar off?
Troubles rise and help is hidden.
Scheming, they laugh and scoff,
in arrogance the poor are stricken.

Boasting in their hearts desire,
for gain they wallow in greed.
Snare them by what they conspire,
for cursing and hate is all they breed.

Daring in their sinful courses,
renouncing Your name in pride.
Deceit and abuse unite forces,
Your decree gone from their eyes.

Lurking, their eyes set to pounce,
in hiding they murder the pure.
'There is no God,' they announce,
thus, the dark oppressions endure.

Hiding deep in shadowed ways,
mocking the cries of the weak.
No secret stays beyond His gaze,
the Lord observes all they seek.

Arise, O Lord; lift up Your arm,
for they say You do not see.
Praising over death and harm,
hear the afflicted's plea.

O God our refuge, send forth care,
we long for justice to soon release.
Strengthen hearts in deep despair,
by Your cross, bring the vile to peace.

Why Did The Land Fall Dark?

"Why Did The Land Fall Dark?"
Written: August 8th, Friday, 2025
By: Matthew Krogstad

Why did the land fall dark,
when the beaten man was hung?
No light; nay, not one spark,
while praises of hell were sung.

Why did the land grow dire?
This man hanging midst the two.
Reviled, yes, cast into the mire.
Has this man received his due?

Why did the land fill with dread?
This man derided and mocked.
Marred his body; frail it bled.
Wagging their heads as they walked.

Why did the darkness shadow the land,
while 'forsaken' he cried loud?
Will Elijah help by command?
Then, in final breath, he bowed.

Why in death did this darkness lift?
'Truly, this man is the son of God.'
The veil was rent; the earth did shift.
Looking from afar, in silence awed.

Why was the darkness so grim?
No terror has ever been greater.
Crushed, this man, with all my sin.
It was I who killed my Creator.

Spoken Word: Before the Alarm Clock

Welcome to Season 2 of Gospel Poetry!

As we start a new season I wanted to share a spoken word poem that I recently wrote in the month of June, 2025. I may share more spoken words every so often. The title of this one is, 'Before the Alarm Clock,' which captures the reality of facing spiritual attacks even before the day begins. I pray it can serve as a reminder of the real battle that goes beyond the physical, and the response that can silence the treacherous voices.

I am grateful to be back and I pray these episodes can enrich your devotion and love for the Lord Jesus. Please share this with your friends and join us next time.

It Is Well

A prayer written in a season of despair
Written: January 5th, Thursday, 2023
By: Matthew Krogstad

Whether I am in a dry land may I say, it is well for Christ is my river. If I be in great need for money may I say, it is well for Christ is my portion.

If it be pain or sickness that overcomes my body may I say, it is well for Christ is my strength and my salvation. If I were to have the world against me all at once may I say, it is well for Christ the King is my rear guard.

If it be the last moments when death will have its victory over my flesh may I look up and say, it is well for Christ awaits to welcome me home. If I am to remain on this earth and doubts pursue me on every side may I say, it is well for Christ is my surety.

If the winds of trials try to take me off course may I say, it is well for Christ my wisdom keeps me level. If my heart grows dim and burns like a faint ember may I say, it is well for Christ my light can set it ablaze once more.

As I wake up each day not knowing what my steps entail may I say, it is well for Christ is my wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption.

Oh blessed loss you are most welcome at anytime for each visit of yours is a gain of mine. I have lost nothing of what I have in Christ.

Psalm 103

A poem inspired by Psalm 103
Written: April 12th, Tuesday, 2022
By: Matthew Krogstad

As high as the heavens reach,
so great is Your steadfast love.
With Your word, O Spirit, teach,
that I may fear the Lord above.

My soul shall bless Your name!
All that is within, my life`s aim.
The chords of my soul flow in motion,
to You, whose mercy outweighs the ocean.

As far as the east is from the west,
my sin and guilt are no more.
With my lips I will continually bless,
He who took the veil and tore.

All my iniquities forgiven in Him,
satisfied with good all my days.
Dealt not according to my sin,
its memory no longer shall stay.

Your compassion is on those who are dust,
our days are like the fleeting grass.
Fearing You in all our ways, we must.
As You lead us to glory at last!

Clothed with strength as we keep Your word,
Your righteousness we now attain.
Our vision is clear, no longer blurred,
the world behind; heaven our gain!

O bless the Lord, bless His name!
Shout, O soul; your Redeemer came!
His anger on you withheld so free,
such infinite love, how can it be?

A Simple Way to Pray

"A Simple Way to Pray"
Written: October 27th. Thursday, 2022
By: Matthew Krogstad

Above the earth exalted high,
tis the blessed place You reside.
Hallowed be thy name, O Lord,
deep within my heart adored.

Let thy Kingdom hasten this day,
drawing those who have gone astray.
Your will be done on earth below,
making us clean, yes, white as snow.

Resting in You each day that is given.
Nourish my soul; refine my vision.
Our daily bread comes forth from You.
You are true Life, yes, and true Food!

As You have forgiven so shall we too,
Your mercies each morning, ready and new.
You the Judge have stayed Your hand,
since Christ fulfilled the laws demand.

Away from temptation lead us, O God,
keeping our eyes off the way which is broad.
Save us from affliction, preserve our souls,
and with our lips Your name we extol!

Your kingdom on high; O City to come,
the light of our eyes; the Eternal Son.
All power, all glory, forever ascribed.
To You, Our Refuge, who shall soon arrive.

The Robe of Him Who Filled The Temple

"The Robe of Him Who Filled The Temple"
Written: November 28th, Monday, 2022
By: Matthew Krogstad
Music: "There is a Fountain" recorded by Capitol Hill Baptist

The robe of Him who filled the temple,
the heavenly host of myriads around.
Standing in fear Isaiah trembled,
Thou art the One who to us, came down.

Into this corrupt habitation,
thy Son of the Most High.
Off His throne to dwell in creation,
thy Infinite drawn nigh.

Unrighteousness clouded this world,
`twas the state from days of old.
In Him the promises unfurled,
this the prophets hath foretold.

The Eternal God whose name is Holy,
given to us in human likeness.
Behold, a King, yet gentle and lowly,
the fulfillment of all righteousness.

Amongst the darkness shines a star,
guiding our eyes to behold this child.
Coming down from a land so far,
The Shepherd of a people exiled.

Brought low in the manager Immanuel lay,
swaddled in cloth; cobwebs His curtain.
Brought lower in death; the cross His array.
His mission to make salvation certain.

Sovereign Bullet

"Sovereign Bullet"
Written: October 14th, Monday, 2024
By: Matthew Krogstad

My heart has known a cruel sharp thorn,
its severity has left my eyes to mourn.
Yet beyond the cloud, light breaks through,
"I never make mistakes; your good is in my view."

Painful providence has caused me to learn,
its purpose in driving my heart to yearn.
Yes, to treasure Him more deeply in every trial,
in Sovereign hands my soul can rest and smile.

No tear is shed outside Thy plan,
Thy grace sustains where sorrow began.
Through trials that cause my heart to weep,
Thy steadfast love my soul will keep.

My joy runs deeper than tragedy,
the winds that steer me gallantly.
Thou unseen, yet mercifully clear,
O Sovereign Lord, deliver from fear.

An aimless world if there were no God,
a mire of suffering to hopelessly plod.
But the Lord reigneth; let earth be glad,
O my soul, no longer be sad.

In worldly thought pain remains the core,
and joy vanishes like sand on the shore.
O, yet see the Christian; this truth reversed,
joy stands firm, though pain be dispersed.

O Sovereign Lord draw back the veil,
for the entire cause of Christ shall prevail.
Therefore, help us trust the path of mystery,
whereby we are led in joyous victory.

Message from the Womb

"Message from the Womb"
Written: May 3rd, Thursday, 2022
By: Matthew Krogstad
Music: "Psalm 127" Poor Bishop Hooper (used with permission)
Commentary: Jeff Durbin, R.C. Sproul, John Piper, John MacArthur, Voddie Baucham

Perfectly crafted and resting as impotent,
Cradled in the hands of Him who is omnipotent.
The inward parts You have made,
Knitted together while covered by Your Shade.

Though my eyes have not opened,
I feel the comfort of Him who is arrayed in glory unseen,
Yet I am not hidden, but fully seen.
The anatomy of my body, from my ribs to my spleen,
Designed and watched over from now into my teens…
And up to my final breath.

Intricately woven, being created in the depths,
Known before I was formed—yes, before life and death.
The number of my days written in Your book,
Long before I ever let out my first cry,
While I open my eyes and look at this life You have provided.
Lord, redeem those who are misguided.

This they know: I am a human from conception.
Stop their hands from murdering me and change their hearts to murder this deception.
Separate from my mother, yet I hear her say, "It’s my choice,"
And they conspire against life without considering my voice.

They make excuses, saying I’m a clump of cells,
Then rip me apart while their lusts drown out my yells.
Hear, oh, hear my message from the womb,
With my perfect heartbeat and personality that is ready to bloom.
Stop allowing my home of creation to be the place of my tomb.

The Great Physician

"The Great Physician"
Written: June 26th, Sunday, 2022
By: Matthew Krogstad
Sermon by Lee Dodd: https://www.sermonaudio.com/sermons/626221821153768

Hear Jesus call the worthless ones,
curing the sick and not the righteous.
Healing the vile from enemies to sons,
has there ever been a grace like this?

Run to Jesus those who see their need,
don't think your sins are too great.
For this is His mission indeed,
welcoming you into Heaven's gate.

The Lord came down with love and zeal,
marking this awesome work as complete.
On Christ Jesus, God has set His seal.
Come and taste that which is forever sweet.

Leaving heaven and the bliss therein,
lowered into the dregs of the earth.
Hanging on the cross, bearing all my sin,
that I may be granted the new birth.

This is Jesus, the Great Physician,
sinner, you are never too far gone.
Run to Him in your sick condition,
and all of heaven will rejoice in song!

Thirsty ones come and be thirsty no more,
for the Son of God is the Remedy.
Oh, if you hear His voice do not ignore!
Come and be freed from all enmity.

Psalm 59

A poem based on Psalm 59
Written: April 12th, Wednesday, 2023
By: Matthew Krogstad
Music (used with permission): "Psalm 59" By: Poor Bishop Hooper

Deliver me from evil, O God of hosts,
Your steadfast love is all my boast.
Lying in wait for me are fierce men,
awake and let Your punishment extend.

Morning and evening they stir up strife,
O Lord, thou are the Shield of my life!
Out of their mouths they bellow deceit,
knowing Your steadfast love, I humbly entreat.

O my Strength, I will watch for You,
make their howling flee like the morning dew.
And in triumph let me stand and survey,
the vengeance of Him who rules each day.

But I will sing aloud in all my distress,
for You, my God, have been my fortress.
In my waiting I will sing praises and adorn,
the God of Israel who by His word has sworn.

O my Strength, in Your love meet with me,
for Thine mercy outshines all of the sea.
Though they prowl to receive their fill,
yet, my heart each morn will trust Thee still.

The Wells of Salvation

"The Wells of Salvation"
Written: May 15th, Tuesday, 2024
By: Matthew Krogstad
Inspired by the book, "The Wells of Salvation Opened"
By: William Spurstowe

Come hither to the land; free of charge,
let not your heart this world regard.
The wells of salvation thrown wide,
in them a worth that will not die.

In its depth find a sanction secure,
sealed by the Blood which shall endure.
Confirmed by the Spirit of truth so pure,
received by the hand of faith so sure.

Its ceaseless flow to our heart purifies,
in hope with faith pursuing our prize.
Communion with God our chief end goal,
gained by His likeness worked here below.

Ushered with Mercy's hand in wise arrange,
its tapestry's perfect design in sunshine or rain.
His wisdom you ought wholly to resign,
whereby a table soon is set to dine.

Unburden yourself from this worldly strain,
for heavens riches are yours to obtain.
Sworn by God our Father who cannot lie,
His wells of salvation that never dry.

Ah, the land of promises unveiled,
opened by my Savior as He was nailed.
Oh, blessed cross! Sealing my guarantee,
the welcome to salvations infinite sea.

Come All You Saints!

"Come All You Saints!"
Written: Friday, June 10th, 2022
By: Matthew Krogstad

Come all you saints and love the Lord,
take hold of the great command to gather.
Neglecting to meet, your soul cannot afford,
freely receive the blessings He longs to lather.

Sing, sing, sing all you saints!
Join in one voice to praise the King,
enter by the Blood with no restraints!
Rejoice over this never-ending spring.

Dear saint, don't forsake the assembly!
For there your eternal family unites,
His hand is shown as we're received gently.
His love poured out by His servants of light.

Are you burdened, and strangled by despair?
Oh, there is a place designated for you.
Established by our Shepherd with great care,
who longs to refresh your soul anew.

Oh, this most desired means of grace,
where God's great mystery is told.
Holy Writ causes all troubles to efface,
more precious than the finest gold.

Don't neglect this gift, rather embrace!
For that sweet and great day is drawing near,
O, Christian soldiers find rest during this race,
in the assembly, until our Lord appears.

Lift Your Heart to the Lord in Prayer!

"Lift Your Heart to the Lord in Prayer!"
Written: October 2nd, Monday, 2023
By: Matthew Krogstad
Music (used with permission): "O That I Had a Thousand Voices" By: Poor Bishop Hooper

Lift your heart to the Lord in prayer!
Oh, this is my joy, my song, my praise!
Untold friendship is mine to share,
adoring my God through endless days.

Lift your heart to the Lord in prayer!
See the present work of the blessed Three,
set forth in beauty, yes, pure and fair.
Words carried by The Blood on bended knee.

Lift your heart the Lord in prayer!
Coming to sit at the Father's feet,
and yes, your Christ will meet you there,
to present your words before The Seat.

Lift your heart to the Lord in prayer!
Words are faint and weakened by grief,
The Spirit stirs a brighter fair,
with unfailing love as He brings relief.

Lift your heart to the Lord in prayer!
The hand of the soul led on by Thee.
Heard with ears of love and care,
by our Great God; Blessed Trinity.

Lift your heart to the Lord in prayer!
O Love, before creations first breath,
beyond our words which fall in err.
Its fulness I shall meet in death.

Have You Taken Much Thought of the Cross?

"Have You Taken Much Thought of the Cross?"
Written: September 1st, Thursday, 2022
By: Matthew Krogstad
Song: "Be Still My Soul" By: Poor Bishop Hooper (used with permission)

Have you taken much thought of the cross?
where justice and mercy perfectly link.
The Son who gave His life as the cost,
taking the Cup of God's wrath as His drink.

It is at the cross where a transaction is made,
for sinners who had an eternal debt unpaid.
So, look with your eyes at Him who has laid,
down His own life and then gloriously raised.

Have you come to know the One on the cross?
His perfect life and death is the reason we live,
a righteousness unearned was freely tossed,
upon sinners who God did not need to forgive.

Real satisfaction was made on the cross,
where God's justice was appeased.
The Righteous One offered up for the lost,
the work of our redemption achieved!

Did you not know the truth runs deep?
Way beyond the physical agony observed.
The Eternal Shepherd of the sheep,
taking upon Himself all we deserved.

The Just God declaring the guilty right,
this is pronounced by the resurrection!
The heavenly courtroom keeping Him in sight,
no longer am I seen; only His perfection.

Foreign Steps

"Foreign Steps"
Written: September 11th, Sunday, 2022
By: Matthew Krogstad

Are your steps on this fallen sphere,
separate from the ones you see?
The King who reigns shall be your Fear,
as He is, so shall you be.

Do you fight this rotting flesh,
are you spent by its lifeless state?
Knowing that it only brings death,
leading you down that cursed fate.

Foreign steps on this wasted ground,
walking in tune with Heaven`s scent.
In this dark world where sin abounds,
does it cause your heart to lament?

Are you one where Christ resides?
Deep within your heart to dwell?
If the Lord in you abides,
tis the fruit that to us tell.

Christian, yours is not a life of ease,
do your joys in comfort lie?
A life that of this world to please,
puts your soul in paths to die.

Take up the Armor and be on guard,
our time we cannot waste.
This journey shall be narrow and hard,
yet sweet will be its taste.

The pleasure of sin is quick to fade,
find rest in the deep well-spring.
Jesus the Lord will come to your aid,
and in victory you shall sing.

Under the Shadow of the Cross

"Under the Shadow of the Cross"
Written: Thursday, September 29th, 2022
By: Matthew Krogstad
Music (used with permission):
"Come, ye sinners, poor and needy" By: Poor Bishop Hooper

Under the shadow of the cross,
I`ll leave all possessions behind.
Its covering has purged all my dross,
tis the path of glory divine.

Under the shadow of the cross,
I carry its victorious pledge.
In weakness I am brought across,
with the Shepherd being my Hedge.

Under the shadow of the cross,
is where I desire to be.
Counting all this world as loss,
gaining Jesus, our Majesty.

Under the shadow of the cross,
with joy I carry my own.
Ponder how the battle was fought,
bearing the weight all alone.

Under the shadow of the cross,
is where my feet will tread.
Surely we will bear many scoffs,
yet remember who is our Head.

Under the shadow of the cross,
no other respite know.
No more to think, I`ve count the cost,
to Jesus, I must go!

Under the shadow of the cross,
oh, my forever hiding place.
Releasing all my dirty cloths,
and clothed in His bottomless grace!

Take Courage, Saint!

"Take Courage, Saint!"
Written: April 23rd, Sunday, 2023
By: Matthew Krogstad
Music by: kingpinguin

Today grants a vicious battle,
one where victory has its end.
Hear the flesh rage and babble,
take Thy truth and firmly contend.

Up in arms! Take ye courage, saint!
The battle you fight yields a crown.
Lo, the heart will tremble and faint,
yet, there is grace that richly abounds.

One step away from the grave,
at the door is death and its sting.
In His strength be alert and brave,
for this door is entry to your King!

Courage! Courage! Courage!
Tis the shout of all His people,
come what may world and flesh!
For on His wings, we mount like eagles.

Awake from sleep! Remember your lot,
take courage, your fight is not alone!
Oh, resting saint has your heart forgot?
A few more days and then we`ll be Home.

Take courage, saint, and fight well,
death will come, yet you will rise!
Sin and this world we shall surely expel,
and Thy Glorious Throne before our eyes.
