Hosea’s Marriage and Children: Hosea 1:1–9
We’ve been focusing on Scriptures covered in our GearTalk Bible Reading Plan. Today, we focus on Hosea 1:1–9. In these verses, we learn about Hosea’s setting, his marriage, and the birth and naming of his three children. As you’re about to hear, the naming of the three kids is the major focus of these first verses. Today, Tom Kelby will reference our Preacher’s Guide to the Book of Hosea. We use this in training pastors and teachers. You can download a free pdf. Just visit handstotheplow.org. To sign up for the GearTalk Bible Reading Plan, go to handstotheplow.org.

Isaiah 63 and the Warrior Who Walks Alone
Today, we’re taking a look at the first half of Isaiah 63. The descriptions of the warrior in this passage deliberately connect to other significant passages related to the Christ in both the Old and New Testaments. Some of the parallels we’ll be talking about today are drawn from Kevin Chen’s book Wonders From Your Law. We’ll put a link to Dr. Chen’s book in the show notes. Today’s podcast draws from one of the Scriptures in this week’s Bible Reading plan. To sign up for the reading plan go to handstotheplow.org.

Isaiah 49 and the Believer’s Union with Christ
Tom Kelby is joined by Chris Promersberger from Mountain Valley Church in Edgewood, New Mexico. Tom and Chris focus on Isaiah 49, one of the Scriptures we’re considering this week in our GearTalk Bible Reading Plan. The apostle Paul deliberately changes one of the verses from this passage in order to apply it to himself and to Barnabas. Why did he do this? Again today’s podcast draws from one of the Scriptures in this week’s Bible Reading plan. To sign up for the reading plan go to handstotheplow.org.

Introducing the GearTalk Bible Reading Plan
We have a big announcement today. We’re launching the brand new GearTalk Bible Reading Plan. This goes through a reading in all three sections of the Old Testament each day, plus one reading in the New Testament. I mentioned this was new. It is. But, as you’re about to hear, it’s a bit more complicated than that. We developed this Bible Reading Plan based on Jason DeRouchie’s KINGDOM Bible Reading Plan. That means it’s old and new at the same time. Today, Tom Kelby and Jason DeRouchie talk about the plan and why Jason developed it . If you can while you’re listening, go to handstotheplow.org and register for the new study.

The Prophetic Word of Zephaniah For the Church Today
Recently Jason DeRouchie published a substantial commentary on the Old Testament prophetic book Zephaniah. On this podcast, Dr. Fred Zaspel, editor of BooksAtAGlance.com, interviews Jason about Zephaniah’s message and lasting significance. Jason’s kids grew up with Zephaniah being one of their dad’s best friends, and we think that you will benefit from the way Jason clarifies how this 53-verse relatively unknown prophetic gem is Christian Scripture that magnifies Christ and speaks to the church today. In the show notes, we’ll include some links to some of Jason’s writings on Zephaniah.

The Nature of the Covenant God Made With Abraham, Part 2
This is the second of a two-part podcast on the Abrahamic covenant. How should we understand the nature of the covenant God made with Abraham? How does it relate to the covenants before and after? What contribution do Genesis 12, 15, 17, and 22 make to our understanding, and how does the whole Abrahamic covenant contribute to how all Scripture progresses, integrates, and climaxes in Christ? This interview with Jason DeRouchie originally aired on Caleb Lenard’s exceptional Theology for the Church podcast on July 8, 2025. It is part of an 8 episode series that walks through all the biblical covenant, and we highly encourage you to listen to all of them.

The Grace of Irritation: Brad Nutt Leads Us Through the Samson Story in Judges 14–16
We’re in our summer of stories series. We’ve been talking about Samson. Last week, Brad Nutt, pastor of Fort William Baptist Church in Thunder Bay, Ontario, led us through Judges 13, where we read Samson’s birth story. There was a lot in that podcast about how we should apply Judges and the story of Samson’s birth to our own lives. That chapter leads the reader to expect great things from Samson. He is a man who, according to the angel, is to be marked by holiness to the Lord. Instead, as we read today, this man is tortured by his own unsatisfied lusts. But Yahweh, in spite of Samson’s madness, is using this man. He is getting his way.

Persevering in Difficulty, Apparent Failure, and Risk: A Conversation with Brad and Shaina Nutt
We’re in our summer of stories series. This was supposed to be a story on Samson today. However, in this conversation, Tom and his guests don't talk about Samson at all. Instead, this podcast turned into a story about the downs and ups of pastoral ministry. Today, Tom interviews Brad and Shaina Nutt. Brad pastors Fort William Baptist Church in Thunder Bay, Ontario. No worries about Samson. Brad will be sharing more about Samson over the next few weeks. You won’t want to miss those podcasts. Today, however, Brad and Shaina share about their own lives. This will be an encouragement to Christians stuck in a difficult season, wrestling with apparent failure after a hard season, thinking about quitting, and contemplating risk.

Jesus’s Healings in Mark 1 and Their Connection With the Story of Lot: Mark 1:29–34
We’re continuing our Summer of Stories series. Today, we have Brian Verrett with us. Brian has been on our podcast many times. Today, he walks us through a familiar story from Mark 1:29-34. This is the passage where Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law and, later that evening, the whole city gathers at the door and many, many people are healed and delivered from demons. Brian explains this passage’s connections with the story of Lot and Sodom and what these connections tell us about Jesus.

The Outskirts of Jesus's Power: Mark 4:35-5:20
In this first podcast in our Summer of Stories series we're starting with two stories taken from the gospel of Mark. We’ll be hearing from Tom Kelby as he focuses on Jesus calming the sea in Mark 4:35-41 and Jesus driving the demons into a herd of pigs in Mark 5:1-20. What do these stories tell us about Jesus? How do these stories connect to each other and to the Old Testament? How should we respond to these stories? Tom preached this sermon at Cornerstone Christian Church in Spooner, WI on June 8, 2025.

How Did Jesus View the Old Testament?
Today, however, we’re replaying a podcast Jason recorded with Shane Rosenthall on “The Humble Skeptic” podcast titled “How Did Jesus View the Old Testament?” Jesus’s understanding of the first three quarters of the Bible should matter to all Christians. He had a biblical theology. And understanding his views proves critical in developing our own biblical theology. We want to rightly understand how the Bible progresses, integrates, and climaxes in Christ. Today’s podcast, again, originally aired on “The Humble Skeptic” will help us do that.
