The Heart of Harlem

In the final episode of our first season we sit down with Ahmad Simmons, a Harlem-born artist and dear old friend. After studying musical theater in Chicago, Ahmad returned home to New York as he and so many other artists found themselves without a career path as the COVID-19 pandemic raged on.

Ahmad is currently a teaching artist in Manhattan and the newest co-host on the podcast "Harlem's Very Own". Find them on all your major podcast platforms, or on instagram @hvopod.

Sit down with the three of us to dive deep into Harlem; the people that live there, the incredible impact they've had on American culture, and the dishonor we've brought to the area through careless gentrification that has threatened the very heart of the legendary neighborhood. Spend some time with us as we unpack the layers of an evolving city, a lost history, and the responsibility that white artists have yet to take for their part in erasing the black foundation of our industry.

Contemplate your place in this story, and the incredible power we all hold to change it.

Too Little, Too Late: A Conversation of Invisibility & Racism with Artist, Amy Boehly

Join us for a conversation with Philly-based actor, model, and character entertainer, Amy Boehly, as we discuss her experiences fighting for equal representation for Asian artists while searching for her own voice and meaningful opportunities in today's world of art.

Explore this timely and emotional subject with us as we grapple with the ignorance, systemic racism & discrimination, and misrepresentation of history that perpetuates these issues. Join us in acknowledging how we have contributed to these problems ourselves in our careers and personal lives, weighing down artists like Amy and robbing us all of a truly open and inclusive arts industry. Laugh, cry, and gasp with us as we share stories of pain, regret, and recognition of how to move forward and do better.

Stream "Pandemic!" until May 2nd Here

Pilot

Welcome to the Dead Artist Society.  In our first every episode we will discuss the origin of our podcast.  We will dive into the past year of not only the pandemic but also of the forced pause the theatre industry faced because of it.  And in the end we will discuss the hope we have for not only this podcast, but for the performing arts as a whole.  Join us as we gain our footing in the world of podcasting and embark on a journey of discussing theatre's dark side.
