On the Direct Recap Show, Corey Dirrig, Stephanie Klimov, and LeRon Dawkins break down Friday morning’s Nintendo Direct, which celebrated Mario’s 40th anniversary with the Super Mario Galaxy movie title reveal, the HD bundle of Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 for Nintendo Switch (also playable on Nintendo Switch 2), and two new Super Mario Galaxy amiibo featuring Mario and Rosalina.
Nintendo also highlighted a Mario anniversary exhibit and limited-edition tickets to the Nintendo Museum in Kyoto, Japan, celebrating the franchise’s long history. Additionally, Nintendo will sponsor the Kyoto Marathon, with their name featured on every runner’s nametag.
The segment revealed two new games and one Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade. Super Mario Bros. Wonder will receive a Switch 2 version in 2026, featuring new content, mini-games, and a multiplayer hub in Bellabel Park. Alongside this upgrade, a physical Talking Flower was unveiled, ready to shout at players whenever they like. Mario Tennis Fever and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book were also showcased in depth, giving fans plenty to look forward to.
After the anniversary segment, it was business as usual. Nintendo shared release dates for previously announced games like Final Fantasy VII Remake, Metroid Prime 4, Pokemon Legends Z-A, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, and Hades II. They also revealed a few surprises, including adding Virtual Boy to the Virtual Console with a special accessory that replicates the original hardware, DLC for Donkey Kong Bananza, Resident Evil making its return with Resident Evil Requiem, and more.
The Direct ended on a high note with the long-awaited next entry in the Fire Emblem series, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. The game introduces an Ancient Greece-inspired aesthetic, new characters, and story elements centered around the Heroic Games. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is set to release in 2026.

A Spotlight Series Interview:
This week, Corey Dirrig and LeRon Dawkins sat down with Matt Bozon, founding member of WayForward and the creative mind behind the beloved Shantae series. Matt talked about his unconventional journey into game development—starting out as a caricature artist at Six Flags, studying animation, and eventually helping shape some of WayForward’s most celebrated titles.
He opened up about his unique design philosophy, where 80s and 90s animation, hardware limitations, and gameplay guided the creative process rather than traditional methods. From there, the conversation moved into stories from his time at WayForward, the many games he worked on, and the creation of everyone’s favorite purple-haired genie alongside his wife.
Finally, they discussed the incredible story behind the revival of Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution with Limited Run Games—why it was brought back after nearly two decades, how the vision compared to the original project, and what fans could expect next.

Edward Varnell and Corey Dirrig dive into the biggest issues facing the big three platform holders—and how each is handling them.
PlayStation is still chasing the live-service dragon… but should they be? Over half of their revenue comes from just ten games, none of which they own outright. After Concord flopped, Bungie hit rough waters, and Fairgame$ failed to spark interest, their only real live-service hits are a fading Destiny 2 and the surprise success of Helldivers 2—which they’re publishing on Xbox this August. Meanwhile, Xbox has that lane locked down with Minecraft, Elder Scrolls Online, Fallout 76, Sea of Thieves, and Call of Duty.
Xbox, though, still can’t get its messaging straight. Mixed signals and rumored clashes with Microsoft leadership have fans frustrated—some even jumping to other platforms that still offer Xbox’s games, like Forza Horizon 5, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and the upcoming Gears of War: Reloaded.
Nintendo is still in the middle of the Game Key Card mess after the Partner Showcase revealed nearly every new game will use them instead of cartridges. Macronix, the Switch 2’s cartridge manufacturer, is now looking at bigger storage sizes beyond the current 64GB, hoping to keep Nintendo competitive with third-party support.

Monster Hunter Stories 3 and Yakuza Kiwami 1 & 2 were announced for Switch 2 while Final Fantasy Tactics got its release date. We saw brand new announcements like Persona 3 Reload, Octopath Traveler 0, and The Adventures of Elliot (with a demo out now).
Big-name titles like Star Wars Outlaws, Cronos: The New Dawn, and Apex Legends are coming to Switch 2, while lighter fare like Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted, Once Upon a Katamari, and Chillin’ by the Fire round things out. Plus, Just Dance 2026, Hyrule Warriors, PAC-MAN WORLD 2 Re-PAC, Hela, Borderlands 4, and more keep the lineup exciting well into the fall.
