Erk Pod | Experimental Scootering Around Newcastle | Attempt 2

On this episode, Eric takes you for a ride on his scooter around his adopted hometown, Newcastle (NSW, Australia). For the second time time, he has attached a Insta360 X4 camera that records 360 degree views. In post production, different views can be selected. There is a learning curve for the camera and editing on the phone and PC versions of the editing software. The camera is clamped to a handlebar of the scooter.Attached to his motorcycle helmet is a Cardo Spirit HD headset which is connected to the camera via Bluetooth. A microphone and speaker are attached inside the helmet. There were lessons learnt from the first recording on the previous day which will feature on this episode. Many motorcyclists on YouTube use this method to share content recorded while riding which allows them to capture the view and also record their thoughts as they are riding. On this episode, Eric scooters to and from the Hunter Ice Skating Stadium from inner Newcastle. It is a good test for this scooter because he has not ridden along this route before riding his newer 2024 model scooter. Episode recorded on Sunday 17 August 2025 which is coming towards the end of the Australian winter season.BRIEF HISTORY OF ERK POD & CHANNEL ERK PODCASTS (2007 - 2014) AND VIDEO CONTENT (2016 - PRESENT)Erk Pod started as an audio podcast, produced in Australia. It started in 2007 focused on the the Australian version the reality TV series called Big Brother. This podcast was called Erk To The Diary Room. After this series was over, episodes became known as Erk Pod. After all, his nickname since primary school was Erk and it was a podcast. Erk Pod grew it's audience with either solo episodes, interviews or group shows with guests and a co-host. The guests would be either people that Erk or others involved knew personally or other podcasters & online personalities. Over time, Erk Pod was joined by other spin off shows called Erk FM, Erk FM: Australia, Erk FM International, Erk FM: Metal Monday which were music podcasts based on unsigned & underground artists. They were often obtained from what was called pod safe music or Creative Commons music.A few years in, Erk's mother joined in to the podcasting space. Blast From The Past became a son/mother inter-generational remembrance & story based talk show. Later, a spin-off music show called Judy's Blast FM hosted by Judy and produced by Erk joined Channel Erk Podcasts. Due to various issues including changing priorities and the ill health of Judy led to the end of Erk Pod and the other Channel Erk Podcasts ended in 2014. Since then, Eric became involved in ice hockey but also started to produce video content on YouTube including Simulated Erk (gaming) and A Mountain Of Work (real life transport videos). Against the odds and totally unexpected by the host himself, Erk Pod is back in 2025 in video form. This can also be enjoyed as an audio podcast. There will be various features and segments included over time with no set schedule. Erk Pod | Story Time | Erk Pod Plays 112 Operator

On this episode, Eric goes into Simulated Erk mode as he looks back at previous roles of working inside a communications centre while playing 112 Operator (available on Steam). 112 Operator is a strategy simulator where you work as an emergency services communications operator and allocate resources and match the available resources with the required tasks. In reality, different communications centres in different locations have different operating models. In Australia where Eric has worked in this industry, each emergency service would have their own communication centres. There may be a series of communication centres based on a geographical basis.112 Operator works on more of an American model where an operator may be operating on behalf of multiple emergency services within a defined operator. 112 Operator is a sequel to 911 Operator. Erk Pod | Testing Editing & Podcasting 1, 2, 3

On this episode, Eric is trialing a new audio interface for potential use outside of the Erk Pod studio. As a result, only the audio was recorded. There may be times where video is not possible for various reasons but there will always be more video than a simple logo screen. Video for this episode comes from A Mountain Of Work where Eric experimented with using 3 wireless cameras on location to capture various scenes. After the testing was complete, Eric discovered that he may have pressed the wrong button which led to most of the recording being unusable. But that's why we test before we do something that is mission critical, right? Right....Take 2 worked much better. On the second half of the episode, Eric talks about some of the podcasts he is currently listening to as well as some from his past. In future episodes, he'll talk about more podcasts, YouTube channels & audiobooks he is consuming. Podcasts mentioned:Trivia/Quiz: Good Job Brain, Do Go On, Miss Information

Aviation: Airline Pilot Guy, Airplane Geeks, Stuck Mic, Plane Crazy Down Under

Trucking: Trucker Tom, Copy Southbound, Big Rig Radio, On The Road Radio

True Crime: I Catch Killers, Witness: William Tyrrell, The Badge & BeyondFind these podcasts using your podcatcher of choice. Some podcasts also available in video form on YouTube. Erk Pod | The Biggest Storm In Newcastle Since The Pasha Bulker? | Part 2

On this episode, Eric discusses a major rain storm that he experienced in inner suburban Newcastle on Wednesday 30 April 2025 and compares what he saw and recorded in the previous episode to what was reported by local media outlets.

This episode really shows the benefits of video and being able to be on site to present a story.

During the previous episode, Eric speaks with a local resident off camera who shared some thoughts about this storm and a comparison between this storm and the storm that saw the grounding of a large ship (Pasha Bulker) near Nobby's Beach in 2007.

It was certainly Eric's biggest storm since moving to Newcastle in 2020.

Eric was not living in the area in 2007 so took a look back at the events around the grounding of the Pasha Bulker on this episode.

Erk Pod | Story Time With Erk Pod In Japan

Looking back in time, Eric shares the times that he visited Japan in 2011 and 2014. 3 months before visiting Japan for the first time, the country was hit with an earthquake and tsunami which also affected a nuclear power plant. Eric's mum thought that he was mad for wanting to go to Japan so close to a major disaster.

SPOILER ALERT - he was fine. He did feel an aftershock, though.

To start the episode, Eric reacts and comments from an initial news report from the BBC. In a happier note, Eric recounts the various adventures he had in Japan. At the time, he did not record videos. Being 2011 & 2014, any videos would look like they were filmed on a potato compared to 2025. To share what the environment would have been like with modern equipment without actually being in Japan, Eric watches and commentates on a video created by Walking Tokyo. There are many examples of these well filmed walking tours on YouTube.

This video and re-telling stories leads Eric down a rabbit hole of looking back at his own memories and finding some classic photos from his first trip to America in 2009 amongst other things.

Erk Pod | Who I Am & Why Facebook Marketplace Isn't For Me

After stopping podcasting in 2014, the voice behind Erk Pod is back... in video form! On this episode, Eric discusses the various parts of someone's personality and how they have different modes when they are in different environments and roles.

Later, Eric features a very funny performance from comedian Lou Wall and how their recent performance has exploded at the 2025 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Lou had a very interesting encounter with someone on Facebook Marketplace which was a part of their Melbourne International Comedy Festival performance. Eric would call this segment "Where Is Bed" as he now has even more reason not to sell anything on Facebook Marketplace.

It's interesting to note that at the start of the day of this episode was recorded, Eric had no idea who Lou Wall was until he saw the video of the performance on Facebook. At the time of recording, it is the only video from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival that he had seen.
