Contraduction by Dan Barker
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/798345 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Contraduction Author: Dan Barker Narrator: Dan Barker Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 3 hours 24 minutes Release date: July 4, 2024 Genres: Atheism Publisher's Summary: In a quiet and unassuming way, Contraduction is utterly brilliant. Every page has a thought so deep and unexpected that it stops you in your tracks, as you not only realize, “That’s a different, really interesting way to think about the world, exactly the opposite of how I normally view things” but also, “And it is absolutely equally valid (and enriching) to adopt this opposite way of thinking.” I loved this book. — Robert Sapolsky, author of The Blank Slate and Determined. An ingenious word for an invaluable concept. Sharp, clear, and timely. — Steven Pinker, Johnstone Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and the author of The Blank Slate and Rationality Both a delightful read and a penetrating argument: Barker has invented an invaluable new concept, and puts it to work with clarity, wit, and above all conclusiveness. A must-have book! — A. C. Grayling, author of The History of Philosophy and The God Argument I am completely down with the concept of contraduction. It fills a need. False pattern recognitions pose a real danger to our survival. Well done! — Ann Druyan, author (with Carl Sagan) of Cosmos, Contact, and Demon Haunted World I love it when brilliant ideas are conveyed clearly and soundly. That’s why I love this book. Dan Barker has provided a much-needed explication of a common fallacy that needs to be understood and rebutted. It is an engaging, enlightening, and insightful book.—Phil Zuckerman, author of Society Without God and What it Means to be Moral With Contraduction, Dan Barker gives us a new word—and a new way of looking at things. I thoroughly enjoyed this! So much to think about—and it made me laugh. What else could I ask for? — Kate Cohen, contributing columnist for the Washington Post and author of We of Little Faith I love how Dan Barker offers us a new word to help us understand how to think rationally in a fun, simple way. I will never look at my reflection in the mirror the same! — Bailey Harris, author of My Name is Stardust

Christianity Before Christ by John G. Jackson
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/791219 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Christianity Before Christ Author: John G. Jackson Narrator: Richard Webb Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 6 hours 16 minutes Release date: June 24, 2024 Genres: Atheism Publisher's Summary: Nothing is new or original in Christianity. That is the important thesis demonstrated in Christianity Before Christ. The least important features, as well as the most important components, were all well developed in cultures that flourished before the time that Christ is alleged to have walked the parched paths of Roman Palestine. The information presented in this audiobook is absolutely crucial if atheists and other free thinkers are to understand the nature of the beast that threatens not only their liberties and rights as citizens in a secular republic, but also threatens to return world civilization itself back to the prescientific levels of the ancient cultures from which Christianity derived all its odd details. Every atheist needs to know what is in this audiobook! ©2002 American Atheist Press. Produced and published by Echo Point Books & Media, an independent bookseller in Brattleboro, Vermont.

Why? The Purpose of the Universe by Philip Goff
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/730492 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Why? The Purpose of the Universe Author: Philip Goff Narrator: Philip Goff Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 8 hours 32 minutes Release date: December 26, 2023 Genres: Atheism Publisher's Summary: Why are we here? What's the point of existence? On the 'big questions' of meaning and purpose, Western thought has been dominated by the dichotomy of traditional religion and secular atheism. In this pioneering work, Philip Goff argues that it is time to move on from both God and atheism. Through an exploration of contemporary cosmology and cutting-edge philosophical research on consciousness, Goff argues for cosmic purpose: the idea that the universe is directed towards certain goals, such as the emergence of life. In contrast to religious thinkers, Goff argues that the traditional God is a bad explanation of cosmic purpose. Instead, he explores a range of alternative possibilities for accounting for cosmic purpose, from the speculation that we live in a computer simulation to the hypothesis that the universe itself is a conscious mind. Goff scrutinizes these options with analytical rigor, laying the foundations for a new paradigm of philosophical inquiry into the middle ground between God and atheism. Ultimately, Goff outlines a way of living in hope that cosmic purpose is still unfolding, involving political engagement and a non-literalist interpretation of traditional religion.

We of Little Faith: Why I Stopped Pretending to Believe (and Maybe You Should Too) by Kate Cohen
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/821407 to listen full audiobooks. Title: We of Little Faith: Why I Stopped Pretending to Believe (and Maybe You Should Too) Author: Kate Cohen Narrator: Kate Cohen Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 8 hours 7 minutes Release date: October 3, 2023 Genres: Atheism Publisher's Summary: An atheist’s impassioned call for nonbelievers to be honest with themselves and their families about their lack of belief—and help change the American cultural conversation. Even though a growing number of Americans don’t believe in god, many remain reluctant to say so out loud. Kate Cohen argues that not only is it rewarding for those of little faith to announce themselves, it’s crucial to our country’s future. As she details the challenges and joys of fully embracing atheism—especially as a parent—Washington Post contributing columnist Kate Cohen does not dismiss religion as dangerous or silly. Instead, she investigates religion’s appeal in order to explain the ways we can thrive without it. Americans who don’t believe in god call themselves atheists, agnostics, humanists, skeptics, and freethinkers. Sometimes they are called “nones,” based on the box they checked on a survey identifying their religion. And sometimes they call themselves Jewish, Christian, Muslim, or Buddhist. Whatever you call yourself, if you don’t believe there’s a supernatural being in charge of the universe, it’s time to join the chorus of We of Little Faith.

Owning the Unknown: A Science Fiction Writer Explores Atheism, Agnosticism, and the Idea of God by Robert Charles Wilson
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/700976 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Owning the Unknown: A Science Fiction Writer Explores Atheism, Agnosticism, and the Idea of God Author: Robert Charles Wilson Narrator: Pete Cross Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 6 hours 25 minutes Release date: September 26, 2023 Genres: Atheism Publisher's Summary: Although humankind today can peer far deeper into the universe than ever before, we still find ourselves surrounded by the unknown and perhaps the unknowable. All great science fiction has used the human imagination to explore that realm beyond the known, just as theistic religions have done since long before the genre existed. As Hugo Award-winning author Robert Charles Wilson argues in Owning the Unknown, the genre’s freewheeling speculation and systematic world-building make it a unique lens for understanding, examining, and assessing the truth claims of religions in general and Christianity in particular. Drawing on his personal experience, his work as a science-fiction writer, and his deep knowledge of the classics of the genre, he makes the case for what he calls intuitive atheism—an atheism drawn from everyday personal knowledge that doesn’t depend on familiarity with the scholarly debate about theology and metaphysics, any more than a robust personal Christianity does. And as he reminds us, the secrets that remain hidden beyond the borders of the known universe—should we ever discover them—will probably not resemble anything currently found in our most prized philosophies, our most sacred texts, or our most imaginative science fiction.

The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God: Why New Atheism Grew Old and Secular Thinkers Are Considering Christianity Again by Justin Brierley

Title: The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God: Why New Atheism Grew Old and Secular Thinkers Are Considering Christianity Again Author: Justin Brierley Narrator: Justin Brierley Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 8 hours 5 minutes Release date: September 12, 2023 Ratings: Ratings of Book: 1 of Total 1 Ratings of Narrator: 3 of Total 1 Genres: Atheism Publisher's Summary: Could We Be Witnessing a Return of Belief in Our Generation? Justin Brierley is convinced that in our time we are witnessing a growing wave of faith. Famously described as the “long, withdrawing roar” of the “Sea of Faith,” the Christian narrative that shaped the West has been replaced by sweeping secularism. But is that the end of the story? It was a conversation with agnostic journalist Douglas Murray that led Brierley to investigate whether a change was on the horizon. Speaking of the “Sea of Faith,” Murray remarked that tides come back in again and that a number of his intelligent friends had converted to Christianity in recent years. Brierley was seeing a similar trend among the secular thinkers he had interviewed. Jordan Peterson, Tom Holland, Dave Rubin, and many others have found themselves surprised by the continuing resonance and relevance of Christianity, and they are joining in on conversations about faith. Readers will encounter Brierley’s discussion of cultural trends and concepts including: - The meaning crisis - Public intellectuals embracing faith - Why the Christianity story is ready to return And much moreIn The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God, Brierley outlines the dramatic fall of New Atheism and the birth of a new conversation on whether God makes sense of science, history, culture, and the search for meaning. People are returning to Christianity―but is the church prepared to welcome a new wave of faith?

Title: The Myth of Immortality Author: Joseph Mccabe Narrator: Oberon Michaels Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 1 hour 14 minutes Release date: July 27, 2023 Genres: Atheism Publisher's Summary: Most organized religions have a major focus on the afterlife and offer methods for obtaining salvation—the process of ensuring that devotees will enjoy eternal bliss in the next world. In this pamphlet, skeptical scholar Joseph McCabe presents his objections to claims of the existence of the soul and of heaven and hell. In McCabe’s view, the desire for immortality is a notable example of wishful thinking; the guiding rule of nature is death, not eternal existence—though we may wish it.

Religions on Trial: A Lawyer Examines Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and More by W. Mark Lanier
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/643235 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Religions on Trial: A Lawyer Examines Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and More Author: W. Mark Lanier Narrator: Jim Denison Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 7 hours 42 minutes Release date: January 24, 2023 Genres: Atheism Publisher's Summary: People today encounter a dizzying array of religious options. We might consider mystical faiths like Buddhism and Hinduism, historical religions like Islam and Mormonism, or more nebulous modern expressions of being spiritual but not religious or religious but not spiritual. How do we know what is true? Is one faith just as good as another? Trial lawyer Mark Lanier presents the claims made by the world's great religions, discusses their histories, and cross-examines their witnesses (their scriptures and traditions) to determine whether their claims are worthy of belief. With his keen legal mind and methodical style, he provides a careful comparative study, highlighting key truths he finds in each religion even as he offers critiques. Treating each perspective on its own terms and weighing the worldviews for consistency and livability, Lanier assesses evidence for and against belief systems with criteria for what constitutes sufficient proof. Believers and unbelievers alike will find here perceptive insights into how we can make sense of competing religious claims and what difference it makes for our own lives.

Prisoner For Blasphemy Thoughts On Atheism & Agnosticism by George William
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/653999 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Prisoner For Blasphemy Thoughts On Atheism & Agnosticism Author: George William Narrator: The Ark, Geoffrey Giuliano Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 7 hours 1 minute Release date: December 20, 2022 Genres: Atheism Publisher's Summary: Atheism, in the broadest sense, is an absence of belief in the existence of deities. Less broadly, atheism is a rejection of the belief that any deities exist. In an even narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Atheism is contrasted with theism, which in its most general form is the belief that at least one deity exists. The first individuals to identify themselves as atheists lived in the 18th century during the Age of Enlightenment. The French Revolution noted for its 'unprecedented atheism', witnessed the first significant political movement in history to advocate for the supremacy of human reason. In 1967, Albania declared itself the first official atheist country according to its policy of state Marxism. Arguments for atheism range from philosophical to social and historical approaches. Rationales for not believing in deities include the lack of evidence, the problem of evil, the argument from inconsistent revelations, the rejection of concepts that cannot be falsified, and the argument from nonbelief. Nonbelievers contend that atheism is a more parsimonious position than theism and that everyone is born without a belief in deities; therefore, they argue that the burden of proof lies not on the atheist to disprove the existence of gods but on the theist to provide a rationale for theism. Although some atheists have adopted secular philosophies (e.g. secular humanism), there is no ideology or code of conduct to which all atheists adhere.

Or, perhaps it is better to say a non-religious revolution. Around a quarter of US adults now say they have no religion. The great majority of these religious 'nones' also say that they used to belong to a religion but no longer do. These are the nonverts: think 'converts,' but from having religion to having none. There are currently about fifty-nine million of them in the United States. Nonverts explores who they are, and why they joined the rising tide of the ex-religious. One of world's leading experts on contemporary atheism and nonreligiosity, sociologist and theologian Stephen Bullivant draws on dozens of interviews, original analysis of high-quality survey data, and a wealth of cutting-edge studies, to present an entertaining and insightful exploration of America's ex-religious landscape. Bullivant crisscrosses the country, talking to everyone from ex-Mormons in Utah to ex-Catholics in Pennsylvania, from ex-Evangelicals in Georgia to ex-Muslims in California, showing not only what they have in common but also how the traditions they left behind continue to shape them.

Written by a linguist, ex-fundamentalist graduate of Liberty University, this book goes straight to the evidence and presents a concise case-by-case analysis of the most salient problems in the Christian Scriptures. With insightful commentary concerning frequent rebuttals used by apologists, it makes a solid case against evangelical claims to inerrancy. Holy Smoke: How Christianity Smothered the True American Dream by Rick Snedeker
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/576997 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Holy Smoke: How Christianity Smothered the True American Dream Author: Rick Snedeker Narrator: Jonathan Yen Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 6 hours 38 minutes Release date: March 31, 2022 Genres: Atheism Publisher's Summary: The Dismantling of Church and State in America Since the first English Christian fundamentalists arrived in the 1600s on the shores of what would become the United States, Christianity has become increasingly embedded in the nation's social and cultural fabric. This is completely contrary to the Founding Fathers' original vision of America; it was designed by them to be a secular democratic republic built on evidence-based Enlightenment values, emphatically not religious faith. Indeed, the Founders purposefully intended that a high, strong 'wall of separation' keep church and state apart in the new nation, while allowing individual religious freedom untrammeled by government—and vice versa. But Christians with theocratic dreams keep trying to breach the wall. Through their efforts, God is now in evidence everywhere in the country—on our money, in our schools, even in high-level-government officials' speeches. Freedom of—and from—religion is the American promise to all its people whatever their belief—or disbelief. This is how the Founding Fathers wanted it to be, not the undemocratic theocracy zealous evangelicals are trying to force on American society.

Mark Lanier Narrator: Steve Menasche Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 8 hours 35 minutes Release date: March 8, 2022 Ratings: Ratings of Book: 1 of Total 1 Ratings of Narrator: 4 of Total 1 Genres: Atheism Publisher's Summary: In the courtroom, lawyers depend on rules of evidence to make their arguments. A case is made by establishing certain facts from which proof can be determined. But what happens when the truth seems to be a matter of faith? Can the legal mind discern the validity of one's belief or unbelief? Nationally recognized trial lawyer Mark Lanier turns his analytical mind to the arguments for atheism and agnosticism. With critical thinking and precision of thought, he examines the rationales made for unbelief and assesses them on their own terms, finding points of strength and weakness in their logic and coherence. He considers whether atheistic frameworks give satisfactory and consistent explanatory answers for understanding human existence and the world around us. He cross-examines the strongest arguments of prominent atheists and also interrogates the questions of agnostics as to whether God is knowable. Through his evenhanded, levelheaded approach, Lanier challenges us all to decide for ourselves what we believe.

There Is No God and Mary Is His Mother: Rediscovering Religionless Christianity by Thomas Cathcart

Title: There Is No God and Mary Is His Mother: Rediscovering Religionless Christianity Author: Thomas Cathcart Narrator: Rick Adamson Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 3 hours 55 minutes Release date: December 7, 2021 Genres: Atheism Publisher's Summary: Is the Western world really post-Christian, or does Christianity simply need a reinterpretation? What did Dietrich Bonhoeffer mean by 'religionless Christianity'? Is it passé? Or was it perhaps ahead of its time? In an era of dramatically increased religious pluralism and the emergence of large numbers of people identifying as 'spiritual but not religious,' so-called 'religionless Christianity' can speak to those who find both biblicism and 'belief-based' religion irrelevant. In this personal, witty, and timely book, New York Times bestselling author Thomas Cathcart takes listeners on a journey into belief and unbelief and leads them through to the other side. Drawing from deep philosophical and theological wells, There Is No God and Mary Is His Mother demonstrates the meaningfulness of being a Christian in a secular age. Cathcart shows that, even absent traditional theological formulas and doctrines, Christianity can be a credible, meaningful, and practical means of negotiating worldly existence and experience. For Christians, There Is No God and Mary Is His Mother offers encouragement. For ex-Christians, it presents a different way of being a Christian than the one they've rejected. For atheists, it shows how Christianity can be an ally in affirming the here and now.

Author: Eric Metaxas Narrator: Eric Metaxas Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 16 hours 48 minutes Release date: October 19, 2021 Ratings: Ratings of Book: 4.09 of Total 77 Ratings of Narrator: 4.25 of Total 24 Genres: Atheism Publisher's Summary: Is Atheism Dead? is an entertaining, impressively wide-ranging, and decidedly provocative answer to that famous 1966 Time cover that itself provocatively asked “Is God Dead?” In a voice that is by turns witty, muscular, and poetic, Metaxas intentionally echoes C. S. Lewis and G. K. Chesterton in cheerfully and logically making his astonishing case, along the way presenting breathtaking—and often withering—new evidence and arguments against the idea of a Creatorless universe. Taken all together, he shows atheism not merely to be implausible and intellectually sloppy, but now demonstrably ridiculous. Perhaps the only unanswered question on the subject is why we couldn’t see this sooner, and how embarrassed we should be about it.
