Please note: This audiobook is in Spanish.

The Saboteur Audiobook by Paul Kix
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/1266/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: The Saboteur Subtitle: True Adventures of the Gentleman Spy Who Took on the Nazis Author: Paul Kix Narrator: Malcolm Hillgartner Format: Unabridged Length: 7 hrs and 13 mins Language: English Release date: 12-05-17 Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: In the tradition of 'Agent Zigzag' comes a breathtaking biography of WWII's 'Scarlet Pimpernel' as fast-paced and emotionally intuitive as the best spy thrillers. This celebrates unsung hero Robert de La Rochefoucauld, an aristocrat turned anti-Nazi saboteur, and his exploits as a British Special Operations Executive-trained resistance fighter. A scion of one of the most aristocratic families in France, Robert de La Rochefoucauld was raised in magnificent chateaux and educated in Europe's finest schools. When the Nazis invaded and imprisoned his father, La Rochefoucauld escaped to England and learned the dark arts of anarchy and combat - cracking safes, planting bombs and killing with his bare hands - from the officers of Special Operations Executive, the collection of British spies beloved by Winston Churchill who altered the war in Europe with tactics that earned it notoriety as the 'Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare'. With his newfound skills, La Rochefoucauld returned to France and organised resistance cells, blew up fortified compounds and munitions factories, interfered with Germans' wartime missions and executed Nazi officers. Caught by the Germans, La Rochefoucauld withstood months of torture without cracking and escaped his own death not once but twice. The Saboteur recounts La Rochefoucauld's enthralling adventures, from jumping from a moving truck on his way to his execution to stealing Nazi limos to dressing up in a nun's habit - one of his many disguises and impersonations. Whatever the mission, whatever the dire circumstance, de La Rochefoucauld acquitted himself nobly, with the straight-back aplomb of a man of aristocratic breeding: James Bond before Ian Fleming conjured him. More than just a fast-paced, true thriller, The Saboteur is also a deep dive into an endlessly fascinating historical moment, telling the untold story of a network of commandos that battled evil, bravely working to change the course of history.

©2017 SAGA Egmont (P)2017 SAGA Egmont

Escaping Hitler Audiobook by Monty Halls
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/1266/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Escaping Hitler Subtitle: The Freedom Trails Author: Monty Halls Narrator: Leighton Pugh Format: Unabridged Length: 9 hrs and 13 mins Language: English Release date: 10-19-17 Publisher: Macmillan Digital Audio Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: Some of the most extraordinary stories of courage and endurance in the Second World War concern the freedom trails, the dangerous escape routes out of Nazi-occupied Europe. Over 5,000 British, Commonwealth and American servicemen made the journey over the Pyrenees, the Slovenian mountains and the Italian Alps. Many also died en route, killed by the perilous conditions or caught by the German army. In Escaping Hitler: The Freedom Trails, Monty Hall recreates the stories of some of the most charismatic figures of the Second World War, men like Major Gordon Lett, who escaped a POW camp in Italy and fought behind enemy lines at the head of the International Brigade. He was joined by an SAS team who took on the German army in Operation Galia and then, exhausted and pursued by the enemy, made a perilous escape across the Apennine Mountains in Italy. There's also Australian Ralph Churches, who orchestrated the mass escape of 100 POWs from Slovenia - the largest successful Allied escape of the entire war. And Len Harley, a Londoner who owed his life to a young Italian girl called Rosina. Monty also describes the bravery of the local people who sheltered POWs and kept the escape routes open - often paying a terrible price. Andree de Jongh risked her life to smuggle men through occupied France, survived being sent to two concentration camps, and has been described by MI9 as 'the greatest of our war-time agents'. Mixing new research, interviews with survivors and his own experience of walking the trails, Monty brings the past to life in this dramatic and gripping slice of military history.

Hitlers furier Audiobook by Wendy Lower

History of China Audiobook by Bryan Smith
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/1266/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: History of China Author: Bryan Smith Narrator: J D Kelly Format: Unabridged Length: 40 mins Language: English Release date: 09-04-17 Publisher: Bryan Smith Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: Written records of the history of China can be found from as early as BC 1500 under the Shang dynasty. Ancient historical texts, such as the Records of the Grand Historian (ca., BC 100), and the Bamboo Annals (before BC 296), describe a Xia dynasty (ca., BC 2070 - 1600), which had no system of writing on a durable medium, before the Shang. The Yellow River's Yellow river civilization is said to be the cradle of Chinese civilization, although cultures originated at various regional centers along both the Yellow River, and the Yangtze River's Yangtze civilization, millennia ago in the Neolithic era. With thousands of years of continuous history, China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, and is regarded as one of the cradles of civilization. Much of Chinese culture, literature, and philosophy further developed during the Zhou dynasty (BC 1046 - 256). The Zhou dynasty began to bow to external and internal pressures in the eighth century BC, and the kingdom eventually broke apart into smaller states, beginning in the Spring and Autumn period, and reaching full expression in the Warring States period. This is one of multiple periods of failed statehood in Chinese history, the most recent being the Chinese Civil War that started in 1927. Between eras of multiple kingdoms and warlordism, Chinese dynasties have ruled parts or all of China; in some eras control stretched as far as Xinjiang and Tibet, as at present. In BC 221 Qin Shi Huang united the various warring kingdoms and created for himself the title of "emperor" (huangdi) of the Qin dynasty, marking the beginning of imperial China. Successive dynasties developed bureaucratic systems that enabled the emperor to control vast territories directly. China's last dynasty was the Qing (1644 - 1912), which was replaced by the Republic of China in 1912, and in the mainland by the People's Republic of China in 1949, resulting in two de facto states claiming to be the legitimate government of all China.

Discovering and Conquering the New World Audiobook by Charles River Editors
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/1266/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Discovering and Conquering the New World Subtitle: The Lives and Legacies of Christopher Columbus, Hernan Cortes, and Francisco Pizarro Author: Charles River Editors Narrator: Colin Fluxman Format: Unabridged Length: 3 hrs and 35 mins Language: English Release date: 08-21-17 Publisher: Charles River Editors Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: The most seminal event of the last millennium might also be its most controversial. As schoolchildren have been taught for over 500 years, "In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue." In October of that year, the Italian Christopher Columbus immortalized himself by landing in the New World and beginning the process of European settlement in the Americas for Spain, bringing the Age of Exploration to a new hemisphere with him. Ironically, the Italian had led a Spanish expedition, in part because the Portugese rejected his offers in the belief that sailing west to Asia would take too long. Everyone agrees that Columbus's discovery of the New World was one of the turning points in history, but agreements over his legacy end there. Although his other three voyages to the New World were far less successful and largely overlooked in the narrative of his life, Columbus has become a towering figure in the annals of history. During the Age of Exploration, some of the most famous and infamous individuals were Spain's best known conquistadors. Naturally, as the best known conquistador, Hernán Cortés (1485-1547) is also the most controversial. Like Christopher Columbus before him, Cortés was lionized for his successes for centuries without questioning his tactics or motives, while indigenous views of the man have been overwhelmingly negative for the consequences his conquests had on the Aztecs and other natives in the region. Just about the only thing everyone agrees upon is that Cortés had a profound impact on the history of North America. If Columbus and Cortés were the pioneers of Spain's new global empire, Pizarro consolidated its immense power and riches, and his successes inspired a further generation to expand Spain's dominions to unheard of dimensions. Furthermore, he participated in the forging of a new culture: like Cortés, he took an indigenous mistress with whom he had two mixed-race children, and yet the woman has none of the lasting fame of Cortés's Doña Marina. With all of this, it is again remarkable that Pizarro remains one of the less well-known explorers of his age. Discovering and Conquering the New World looks at the lives of the three famous explorers and their enduring legacies.

The History of Modern Egypt Audiobook by Charles River Editors, M. Clement Hall
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/1266/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: The History of Modern Egypt Subtitle: From Napoleon to Now Author: Charles River Editors, M. Clement Hall Narrator: Scott Clem Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 40 mins Language: English Release date: 08-08-17 Publisher: Charles River Editors Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: In the last year, Egypt has undergone a revolution that expelled its authoritarian leader of nearly 30 years, and implemented elections that have pitted the Egyptian military in a power struggle with the Muslim Brotherhood, the long-time Islamic opposition group with ties to Hamas and elements of al-Qaeda. Making everything that much more surreal, the events have played out before well placed television cameras with continuous "real time" coverage of the revolution, and ongoing turmoil, and foreign nations around the world eagerly await or dread the end result. The situation in Egypt sounds messy today, but strife in Egypt is hardly a new occurrence. In fact, conflict has been more of a rule than exception since the end of the 18th century, when Western powers, beginning with Napoleon and the French, got involved in the territory that was at that point a part of the Ottoman Turkish Empire. Since then, European powers came into conflict with each other and local Egyptian officials in their imperialistic efforts, Egyptian nationalists tried to do away with foreign interference, and the critically important Suez Canal became a geopolitical hotspot. And when Egypt finally did receive full independence and sovereignty from the British, it was subjected to conflict between religious extremists, secular forces, pan-Arab nationalists, and oppressive strongmen. The History of Modern Egypt comprehensively covers this turbulent history, helping to explain and sort through all the different forces at play in Egypt over the last 215 years. At the same time, it examines and analyzes all of the different religious, political, foreign, and military issues that continue to affect Egypt today. The History of Modern Egypt will bring listeners up to speed on one of the world's crucial countries today.

Sir Ernest Shackleton Audiobook by Charles River Editors
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/1266/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Sir Ernest Shackleton Subtitle: The Life and Legacy of the Legendary British Explorer and His Expeditions to Antarctica Author: Charles River Editors Narrator: Scott Clem Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 12 mins Language: English Release date: 05-19-17 Publisher: Charles River Editors Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: "For scientific leadership, give me Scott; for swift and efficient travel, Amundsen; but when you are in a hopeless situation, when there seems to be no way out, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton." - Sir Raymond Priestley Exploration of Earth's wilderness areas became an international obsession in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as economically advantaged nations, in particular European powers and the United States were well equipped to mount exhaustive expeditions. From previously inaccessible forests and jungle country to the world's great mountain ranges, adventurers sought out the greatest extremes of climate and terrain in a race to plant the first flag where humanity struggled to survive. An earlier wave of explorers led to the opening of the New World, and early polar expeditions saw ancient ships of various nations sail along the coastlines of Greenland and within reach of the Arctic and Antarctic continents. Many 19th century figures approached the polar region with an eye to traversing it. Most notable among them was British explorer Sir James Clark Ross, who took the Erebus and the HMS Terror to the southernmost coastlines of the planet. Ross is probably the first explorer to realize that Antarctica was a continent and not just a large chain of islands, and he discovered the section of the shelf that was to become the Victoria Barrier. Asian nations also took part in Antarctic exploration when Nobu Shirase of Japan mounted his 1911 expedition, while Sir Edgeworth David, a Welsh-Australian, was the first person to successfully reach the summit of Mt. Erebus. Richard Evelyn Byrd is believed to be the first pilot to cross the Antarctic continent, and even well past the era of great polar expeditions, British figures such as Edmund Hillary, conqueror of Mt. Everest, made several expeditions to the South Pole. The era was universally dubbed the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, but its greatest story did not stem from the actual achievement of reaching the pole. It was, rather, one of the most profound and heroic rescues ever witnessed that affirmed the empire's greatness, embodied by the inspired insistence and exemplary conduct of Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton. This unlikely figure entered the rich man's world of polar exploration through an astonishing persistence and succeeded through the same quality. In fact, it was with Scott that Shackleton participated in his first polar expedition. Shackleton's place in history is not the one he set out to make, but his extraordinary deeds have made his contributions to early exploration of Antarctica indelible. Despite the victor's wreath eventually going to another, Shackleton's name is essential to any discussion of Antarctic exploration, based on personal heroism more than logistical triumphs.

Title: Our Vietnam Nurses Author: Annabelle Brayley Narrator: Wendy Bos Format: Unabridged Length: 9 hrs and 15 mins Language: English Release date: 05-12-17 Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: An inspiring and astounding look at the extraordinary courage and contribution of Australian nurses and medics during the Vietnam War. From the best-selling author of Bush Nurses and Nurses of the Outback comes this collection of compelling and moving stories of our heroic nurses in the Vietnam War. Being a nurse always requires a cool head, a steady hand and an open heart. But if you're working in a war zone, the challenges are much harder. When Australia joined the Vietnam War, civilian and military nurses were there to save lives and comfort the wounded. With spirit and good humour, they worked hard and held strong, even though most of them were completely unprepared for the war before they landed in the middle of it. Working incredibly long hours and surrounded by chaos and turmoil, these brave nurses and medics were integral to our war effort. These 15 stories show a side to the Vietnam War that has received little recognition but played an important part in shaping Australia's presence in the war. From flying with critically wounded Australian soldiers out of turbulent war zones to being held at gunpoint, the compassion, courage and grace under fire in Our Vietnam Nurses will inspire and astound.

Axum Audiobook by Charles River Editors

Title: Axum Subtitle: The History and Legacy of the Kingdom of Aksum's Capital and One of the Oldest Continuously Inhabited Cities in Africa Author: Charles River Editors Narrator: Scott Clem Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 7 mins Language: English Release date: 05-12-17 Publisher: Charles River Editors Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: In the year 570 CE, a child by the name of Muhammad is born in the Arabian city of Mecca. Sixty-two years later, he dies, and upon his death, the faith that he founded, Islam ("obedience to the one God"), dominates the western half of the Arabian Peninsula. By the end of the first millennium CE, four centuries after the death of Muhammad, Islam has grown to dominate western Asia, north and east Africa, the Levant, and the Iberian Peninsula. The Holy Lands are lost to Christianity, and Christian Europe is under siege. Folk tales begin to circulate - their origins obscure, but first noted in historic texts around the 12th century CE - of a lost Christian kingdom in the East, the Kingdom of Prester John. There resides the patriarch of Saint Thomas, who proselytized in the Orient. Later, in the 15th century, under the impetus of the Portuguese King Henry the Navigator, Portuguese missionaries and navigators enter the Indian Ocean from the south and, creeping northward up the east coast of Africa, hear ever more substantial tales of a Christian kingdom lost in the belly of Islam. As they enter upon the coast of Somalia, competing in a growing trade in slaves and gold with Arabs of the peninsula, they become increasingly interested in the source of this legend, in part to fulfil the centuries-long dream of discovering the Kingdom of Prester John, but also in part to secure the alliance of a Christian power against the force of Islam.

First World War: 1917 Audiobook by Sarah Kilgarriff
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/1266/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: First World War: 1917 Subtitle: Voices from the BBC Archive Author: Sarah Kilgarriff Narrator: Jonathan Keeble Format: Original Recording Length: 2 hrs and 8 mins Language: English Release date: 04-06-17 Publisher: BBC Worldwide Ltd. Genres: History, World Publisher's Summary: From the Russian Revolution to America's declaration of war and the lasting horror of Passchendaele, this unique collection of historic recordings contains the voices of those who were there. Among the memorable voices in this compilation are Commander William Ibbett, who experienced the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution at close quarters; Sir Edward Spears on the mutiny in the French army; and Royal Flying Corps pilots, whose life expectancy could be a low as a single day. The year 1917 was a year of decisive events. Germany raised the stakes at sea; America eventually declared war; the Nivelle offensive almost destroyed the French army; and, following two revolutions in February and October, Russian forces collapsed. For the Allies, despite their successes at Messines and Cambrai, the year was overshadowed by the losses at Passchendaele. Survivors recall their despair as men and horses drowned in mud: 'a viscous, tenacious mud which smelt of death'. In the Middle East, British fortunes changed with the capture of Aqaba and Jerusalem. General Allenby, Commander of the Palestine Campaign, recalls the vital if unorthodox feats of one officer in particular: Colonel TE Lawrence. By December troops on the Western Front were digging in for yet another winter. Victory now depended on the arrival of the Americans.
